I was always a Lars fan - he was one of the guys in rock that inspired me to be a drummer. All us oldies love Cliff though. I also had a strong attachment to Jason. I feel he was the one that put the most heart into the gigs, and got little to no respect - because the other band-members saw him as a reminder of the one they lost. Other songs: "Disposable Heroes" "Welcome Home - Sanitarium" "Orion" (is a pure instrumental) "For Whom the Bell Tolls" "Blackened" "Nothing Else Matters"

@@lightningmonky7674 (First of all, with all due respect, I am giving you my opinion while also answering your question, because I do respect and understand your point of view because I once felt that way.) I used to really like Lars too. I thought he was a really badass drummer, especially in the earlier days of Metallica from “Kill ‘Em All” to about “Load” or “Reload”. But after learning more about him, I kind of started to dislike him because his drumming started to kind of suck. Now he does way to many drum fills and can barely keep time. Plus, he is an asshole and he was an asshole towards Jason for no reason. He really went to the extreme level of completely removing Jason’s bass from the entire “And Justice For All…” album. That is mostly why I and many people dislike Lars, but I’m sure there are other reasons that people hate on Lars that I don’t know about.

I feel like she's still got so much to react to from their master of puppets, ride the lightning, black album, and justice for all albums still. She mentioned in several other videos how much she loves the story their instruments tell and they have a plethora of instrumental only tracks that do that but ten fold. They have plenty more ballads left like welcome home and nothing else matters as examples and if she even wants to get into a different metallica sound, she could explore their thrash with kill them all. There's so much left before even diving into st anger and post anger

I have to be honest. When this song was playing on the airwaves, the radio and my CD player, I always knew most of the lyrics, but I never put things into James’ perspective. I guess it could be attributed to my ASD, but my perception of most lyrics was more like hypothetical storytelling. I never really stopped to think that James was speaking from experience and speaking from the heart. And you do it on the first fucking listen. I always enjoy your reactions Lilly. You connecting with the music in an empathetic manner in which you can personally relate to the art, is appreciated and special.

Chad i agree. I believe that the song was about his mothers undying belief in her religion saving her from the cancer and his resentment towards religion has resonated through a few songs but my favorite song about blindly following a religious belief is "Leper Messiah". what a great and powerful song. "Send me money, send me green, heaven you will meet, make a contribution and you'll get a better seat!" These first three albums all are in the top 10 albums in the pantheon of heavy metal history and written by the time they were the age of 23-24 years old is an achievement that just can't be imagined.

The Unforgiven has nothing to do with religion. It’s about society. The God the Failed and Leper Messiah talks about false gods (people that are trying to fool you). Like his mother’s belief. She refused treatment, she thought our body can heal itself because someone convinced her that’s true. Hetfield is a Christian. He has a Jesus tattoo on his arm.

One of the reasons that solo has so much impact is during the recording Kirk had plotted out a solo that no one was liking. The producer Bob Rock really laid into Kirk during that session and challenged him. The very next take is the solo you hear on the record.

Rob Trujillo didn’t join the band until around 2003. The bassist you’re hearing in this song is Jason Newstead, who was with Metallica from late 1986 until early 2001 after the tragic death of Metallica’s “kinda” original bassist, the legend Cliff Burton. I say “kinda” because Ron Mcgovney is technically Metallica’s original bassist, but he never recorded and album with them.

My favorite of the trilogy has changed with time. As a teenager only the first two parts existed yet, and I favored part one, as a teenage outcast. As I entered my 20's and was desperately looking for love, after losing my mother and grandfather... I started to favor part 2 more. And now that I am in my 30's, and can look back on the mistakes that brought me to where I am in my life currently, part 3 holds a strong message for me. Particularly the, "Forgive me, forgive me not, forgive me. Why can't I forgive me?" Portion.

For most Metallica fans their best documentaries/home videos are "A Year and a Half in the Life of Metallica" (1992) which is a two part, half live half studio diary from the recording sessions for the 1991 Metallica album ("The Black Album") and first two years of touring. Also have the 5 official videos for Enter Sandman, Sad But True, The Unforgiven (I), Wherever I May Roam, and Nothing Else Matters. They played on this two videos songs from 1983 to 1991, their "Golden Era".

Having grown up in a super religious household this was my theme song for many years. A friend gifted me this album on cassette tape. I had to keep it hidden so my parents wouldn't know I was listening to "devil music". Knowing that others had gone through what I was gave me strength and determination to keep moving forward and stay true to myself. It's one of the reasons Metallica has and always will be one of my favorite bands.

Of course, not all Christians take things too far, like fringe Christian Scientists sometimes do. There's the story of a man who climbed up on his roof during a flood, waiting for a miracle to save him, was killed, and when he got to Heaven, asked God, "Why didn't you save me?" And God replied, "I sent the police, then the fire department, didn't I, and you rejected their help."

So what you explained about Christianity is really Christian Science which is what James was. They believe that God will heal you of every affliction through faith. That is not what the Bible teaches at all. Matter of fact, the Apostle Paul spent most of his adult life in prison being persecuted for spreading the gospel. The Bible's promises for Christians are that we will be persecuted, mocked and scoffed at. But that when this life is over, our faith will make it all worth it.

I have been with Metallica since their first album was released, but it wasn't until Ride the Lightning that I found my desire to play guitar....and the only person I ever claimed as an influence and inspiration in my playing was James F-ing Hetfield! That said, the solo that Kirk lays down on Unforgiven is absolutely my all-time favorite solo. Just how he takes you from someplace low in the song, brings you to a high place, lets you come down just a little bit, then takes you even higher! It's one of the only solo's in their entire catalogue that I ever wished I could play. I can play rhythm guitar like Papa Het all day long without missing a beat....but I just can't move fast like Kirk does.

You really should shift into Metallica live in Seattle 1989. Try the song "Battery". It's about physical and mental abuse. "Battery" in legal terms is committed for the purpose of causing a harmful or offensive contact or under circumstances that render such contact substantially certain to occur or with a reckless disregard as to whether such contact will result. Normally when "A" is just hitting or abusing "B" without "B" defending themselves.

I'm not actually a religious person but I've always given the benefit of the doubt. People cry about "Oh god took away my parents. He must be evil or he must not exist". Well, who's to say taking away their parents wasn't part of protecting them? How can we know what would have happened if the parents stayed in the picture? Maybe growing up with them could have been worse than losing them. In this case, there wouldn't have been a Metallica and this band has touched a lot of lives in a very positive way. Bigger picture and all that. Just sayin'.

Then Jesus comes along and lives perfectly to be the punishment required by dying on the cross to pay that debt, if you accept that free gift. NOT everybody grows up in a "healthy" or "supportive" family!! In my own case I was the oldest of two boys....and in my parents eyes I was always wrong, always stupid and always the blame for everything bad in our house!!! I was constantly punished for things I never even did and likewise also accused of things I never did as well!! Meanwhile MY BABY BROTHER could DO NO WRONG! And he exploited that knowledge until I was well into my teen years, which helped erode the relationship I had or could have had, with my parents!! My father passed away two years ago, two days after his 81st birthday, and I haven't really talked to my own family since 1986! TO THIS DAY my mother treats me like an idiot, talks down to me all the time and acts as though I am the "worst person on the planet" while I have never asked them FOR A DAMN THING either!! AND they do everything for my brother.......and do absolutely NOTHING for me....which is fine, because frankly speaking I have never needed them in my life anyhow, and they showed me that they never actually cared either!!! I have made piece with that!!

I was also in foster care, thankfully only for about eight months. Some of that was a reprieve from some actual stress at home but other parts were nightmare fuel. It sucks when people really look down on kids for what the parents have done. I was not the worst off. There were kids who were there before me and some came in after me who had things REALLY bad and will carry emotional scars forever. I have problems but I know for a fact there are people with much worse problems, so I thank my lucky stars. Religious zealots among Christianity (also called NUT-JOBS) are absolutely the worst. No kid would ever be allowed to voice an opinion because 'children are meant to be seen and not heard'. You know that one passage in the Bible, 'Children, respect your elders'? Guess what THE VERY NEXT line says? That line 'SOMEHOW' gets completely IGNORED. 'Fathers, do not exasperate your children.' It's like, DO YOU actually follow the Bible's teachings as you profess to, or NOT? Make up your mind. The Do As I Say But Not As I Do B.S. needed to stop Centuries ago.'

If you REALLY want to give a Hell of a reaction video, I recommend Sleeplessness Nights by King Diamond Live At The Fillmore, he was at the time 64 years of age, you will NOT believe the range of his voice. I promise you will be Shocked and Impressed.

Ok so I dig your reactions...but you put way too much emphasis on "James this, James that." This isnt like the music nowadays where they play for 10 seconds and pause and continue at the singer's call and will at anytime he or she wants...all these songs back then were done in 1 take...the whole group had to mesh perfectly because there was no other option to cut and paste and Loop. Kirk Hammet, Lars Ulrich, Cliff Burton...these men are legends and deserve to have their names mentioned just as much. Their INSTRUMENTS told you a story by themselves. One was never more important than the other...there was the incident where a member left to become and help create megadeth...but thats a different story...point is, James Hetfield (as godly as he is) does not "make" Metallica. But of course he is the voice of the gods in this case but all these guys TOGETHER made a perfect Quadforce group to rule Metal for quite a while and many argue metallica died when Cliff Burton died :/...That being said...you got the Godly voice of James Hetfield, the Godly guitar sounds are none only than Kirk Hammett...the fire ass drums are all Lars Ulrich...the thunderous bass is good ol Cliff Burton (RIP to a god)...with after his passing, a skilled protege stepped up being Jason Newsted, or Newstead...i forget how to spell it...and we were like "ay? 😒🤔....AYYYYY 🤘 these men deserve their names blasted everywhere...welcome to metallica girl🤘😎

As far as I'm concerned; James *is* Metallica... and his showcase song is "The Outlaw Torn" (best version is from S&M).

Christianity does not promise that if you believe in Jesus or God that you will be free from struggle. In fact the Bible promises the opposite. There will be strife and persecution in this life to all including Christians. John 16:33 “In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.” Jesus promised this and it happens through death, illness, and so much more. The idea that if you are a good Christian than nothing bad will happen comes from ridiculous prosperity "preachers". Anyway, great reaction! God bless.

1 person who was not a fan of the movie "Some kind of monster" was ex-Metallica bassist Jason Newsted... he was not happy about how the band was portrayed, and he felt that James Hetfield should not have had so much scrutiny... given what has been happening to the Metallica frontman today - more rehab, and James just filed for divorce. In interviews, Jason said that they were talking about bringing in a film crew, and he opposed it because both he and James were struggling w/ substance abuse (prescription drugs and alcohol) in 2000/ '01... and then managers brought in a 'mediator' Phil Towle to help the band reconnect. Jason hated the idea and felt that Metallica's managers were not acting in the band's best interest (That was obvious when they gave their thumbs-up listening to the 'St. Anger' album, which was an awful disaster of a record). Jason also said that James Hetfield was a private guy, and the movie exposed parts of his personality that should not have seen the light of day, because they were meant to stay private... Jason's issues came years in Metallica after he was not given any creative input into Metallica's music... he created side projects to make music on his own, and one was a jazz band called Echobrain. He claimed he showed it to the managers and band, and they were all excited to release it. Then, James heard it and he said, "No, you can't put this out." It was in the fall of 2000 when Jason knew he was leaving the band... he appeared on TV for the Metallica performance at an awards show, playing 'Fade to black'... but didn't hang around w/ the other 3. In early 2001, the band had a meeting, and Jason proposed that Metallica take a year off - he felt the band was in no shape to make a new album, and he was right. He was going to put out the Echobrain album and promote it... he had no desire to have Phil Towle counseling them during the sessions, and James was drinking heavily and in poor shape... The band said, 'no'... the sessions were booked... producer Bob Rock was coming in... the film crew were booked... the new Metallica album was the priority. Finding no other option, Jason announced he was leaving Metallica... and he said when they told the managers after the meeting, they were not bothered and kept throwing offers on the table for the band... and he knew that he had made the right decision... When Jason heard 'St. Anger', he said it was not an album he would have put his name on... "I heard this one song playing, and it just seemed to go on and on, forever... and I was just not into that anymore..." As we all saw in the movie, Metallica's output was terrible, the producer Bob Rock was no help... James was in a bad place and he ended up quitting the sessions... When they resumed recording, it was a mess... Personally, I felt the older documentary "A year and half in the life of Metallica" was a much better portrayal of the band. Jason Newsted was not as successful in his post-Metallica ventures, but he did deliver some great records like the Newsted solo album... 3 albums by Voivod... He's been active on a smaller scale playing music that he felt passionate about.

At 5:15, you elude to Hetfield losing his mom to cancer. Check out "The God That Failed" from the same album. In Christian Science, they typically reject modern medicine & science. The attitude is the God will cure you, and if not, it was your time to go.

Liking your reactions. I just wanted to say, as a Christian, I don't know about Christian Science (which James' family was in), but in general Christianity, we don't believe that being good = good things always happen to you, there's even the story of Job ("Johb"), who was one of the most righteous people on the planet when his life was brought to absolute ruin due to the enemy. In the end God restored him, but he still went through much torment.

Like the one other person that commented you should also check out unforgiven too and unforgiven 3 Notice that TOO is spelled out and it's not the number 2 That's a little hint but I don't think you need hints :)

Well, the reason you cant be an expert on christian science is not that you didnt study it. The reason is, that religion and science are simply two opposites. I studied history and religious studies on the university and since its very interdisciplinary (is that the correct word?) I've worked with people from philosophy, sociology, theology and many more. And although theology is officially considered a science, it carries one important issue with itself: you have to believe at least a minimum amount of religious content in order to learn "properly", while true science always keeps the idea of "we could be totally wrong with everything" in mind. Belief or religion does not have that, because belief is based on almighty gods, creationism, rules, duality etc. And if your content has a superhuman background, making it invulnerable to scientific proof or research, everything that comes after that can be redefined by so called virtuosos, persons of big charisma that are accepted as leaders and sources of truth rather than experimental research or empirism. Long story short: if you're raised to believe and follow ideas without questioning, once you grow up and become emancipated or mature, you eventually start to realize that taught truth and actual reality are two seperate things. And if that happens while you're a teenager or young adult, it can change your whole view on life, on good and bad, wrong or right and all that you thought was taken for granted. In a christian environment this can mean, that the idea of forgiveness (original sin...) totally disappears and allows you to form a whole different self evaluation.

Actually, there's nothing in Chrisitianity that says only good things will happen to you. Quite the opposite, in fact. Jesus straight up said the world would hate us, because it hated Him first. Of course, God does love us and want the best for us, but He never promised us a rose garden.

It has nothing to do with religion. He is talking about society. A child comes to life and becomes an old man that lives with regrets. People in society are meant to assimilate. Everybody wants to become something different but everybody is the exact same. We are converting people into our societal rules, telling them what’s right, what’s wrong, what’s popular, what’s not. How to get a good job by going into the system and getting an education that just builds and builds until you can’t think creatively anymore. You can think really well in a high level academically but not really creatively. What he is saying is that he never could develop into the person that he is meant to be and now he has regrets. We are depriving everybody of their real passions and their real loves and their real creativity by trying to make them unique which actually makes them all the same and similar.

Also I got a Song recommendation, it’s “In My Darkest Hour” by Megadeth

Lars is an amazing song writer. That's why he is in the biggest Metal band ever. Even if he is not an atomic clock , lars improves James riffs. And he changed heavy music history. He doesn't deserve all this hate. He's my favourite Metallica Member. I've met him several times. He is way more kind and disponible than Kirk for instance.
