You don't always have to forgive. That's the point of the song. A young man is born, and crushed. Molded, virtually enslaved by his family and society and all the expectations placed on him. But he doesn't have to waste his life. He doesn't have to suffer. And he doesn't have to forgive those that abuse him. He owes them nothing.

This song, and all the others that followed, meant a ton to me. I grew up to this. I spent 14.5 years between the Marine Corps and Army. I divorced and got custody of my two girls. I been told my whole life what I am supposed to do. I just completed my bachelors in mechanical engineering at the age 37. I love this song, but truly loved how you two interpreted it the same why I did. Half my family doubted me. Now I am trying to shine, even I have a dark past that they know nothing about. God bless you two and keep on. Hope you two thrive.
@ShadowRyu

Fun fact: the guitar solo where Kirk shreds it was basically accidental. Kirk was having a hard time writing the solo. Days in the studio with the rest of the band making fun of him and mocking him. "Oooh.....mister guitar player of the year can't write a solo?" Directly quoted from I believe James hetfield if I remember right. So, Kirk gets pissed and basically says fine, play it. What you get is what you get. And that little bit of frustration turned into one of the most iconic solos of all time.

Been with Metallica as soon as I was able to buy cassettes, then cd's, and here is the best explanation I can find for this song and the trilogy in general: The Unforgiven songs are about James Hetfield and his struggles due to the environment he was raised in. A very strict Christian home that did not believe in medicine or anything because God would take care of it. Due to that he watched his mother die of cancer after his father had already left the family. He's not talking about growing old either. The guy in this first Unforgiven isn't old nor grows old in the song. It's about the feeling of being young (James was a pretty young guy when he wrote this, early thirties tops) but feeling like your life is over. That the world has battered you so bad that you are, inside, an old man. That's why he says the lyrics "that old man here is me". He means from the years of mental abuse, both in his childhood and what he's done to himself, have turned him into a bitter old man. James Hetfield is The Unforgiven. He has stated before these songs are very auto-biographical. The Unforgiven trilogy is like his life. These three songs are him in his own words and in my opinion, that's why they're great. Hetfield is a great mind and to get a glimpse into the darkest corners of that has made for one of the best songs ever. That is, The Unforgiven.

please take your chance, be serious, love yourself. it takes self love to heed the warning in this song, not understanding what it means. I assure you, that's what it takes. So love yourself. Many people don't need a reason to, the self love comes naturally but some people have this mechanism broken in early chilhood, and unwarranted guilt becomes a part of their lives, they keep getting gaslit with conditions imposed on them to feel they deserve to be alive. Actually it was quiet uneventful and kind a let down, there was no grim reeper and I want to point out that when you die you are immediately aware of all the bad choices that i made and you are not allowed to move on until you shed all the negative things that you accumulated in your life, only its a lot harder to do it on the other side and as far as the drugs and other things I did when I was allow it come back all that was taken from me I had no immediate memories of it and no cravings in fact i felt the ecact opposite i totally opposed putting any drug in me and I didn't have my addictive personality any more, when I asked to be saved I got way more than just another chance at life and I was allowed to remember my experiences on the other, there is a hell and its real and it does consume people like myself before I died , but in this life its easy to shed all the negative things in your life, kindness, compassion, forgiveness and the most important thing of all swallowing your pride and ask for forgiveness, and know this you will transform into that life in the end , there is a heaven and a hell if you choose to call it that sorry i used the church description for it but it how I learned to relate but I will never allow myself to be that person who I was before I died , that man died and I stand here in his place

I considered that however how was it that when this happened it was the middle of January in northeast Nebraska at night and the the temperature was hovering around 0° Fahrenheit which for that time of the year was normal and immediately after my body died I found myself standing outside and my car which was still running looking at myself slumped outside of my car with the door open and the realization that I am dead 💀 and I was a little bit disappointed, I don't expect you to believe that is not my intention because someone who really needs to hear my experience will take it and possibly turn there life back to the positive away from the brink which many of us are on so peace ✌ brother and you don't have to believe because while you don't believe now I believe and pray for you warm wishes to you both i very much enjoy your show

@Atheos B. Sapien ok thats cool if you choose to believe what you do and I know eventually you will experience what I did at some point in your life, hopefully later than sooner but we all get there and there will be an ah ha moment and you will laugh at yourself and say well shit I guess that guy was right and that's enough for me
@timholmes8395
@timholmes8395 3 года назад
@Atheos B. Sapien hallucinations as you call them are a construct of Brian in an attempt to rationalize what has no rational meaning or explanation so most people see them as not real but now you are trying to quantify what's real and what is not, allow me to offer this to you can you prove that you are really you, you can offer anything you want to as proof but you still can't prove that your proof is real proof iether, in short in from psychology 101 you can't prove that you are you you have to convince one other person to believe that everything you say is 100% truth the brain is the same way when it comes to hallucinations and then you have to decide how much of your existence is real and how much is just an idea maybe the reality that you cling to is in fact a hallucination and i am trying to help you see beyond it , but in the end I know that you will figure it out, the truth is on an intelligent scale i am a genius and I am Aware of things around all of us that most people are still blind to, but I encourage you to come up with your own personal narrative for yourself take care dude

One of the BEST feelings is when you have a song, or not even a song, just a melody or a snippet of a song in your head off and on for YEARS, you know you you’ve heard it, you know it was in a movie, but you can’t for life of you remember what it is or where you heard it..... Then it comes on and it all comes to you, and you now have the name and artist!!! So satisfying!! I love how open minded and ‘lets go! Let’s play it!’ With any and song! We need more like you! And funny and entertaining!

Analysis of lyrics: First verse is about James' experiences when he was around, say, five years old. He was beginning to learn about the christian science he was taught by his parents. The line that sums this up is, "The young boy learns their rules." Second verse talks about James' struggles as he was growing up to into a teenager. At this point in time, he was old enough to realize that his parent's christian beliefs wouldn't stop his mom from passing away. So, from that moment on he promised himself never to follow the footsteps of his parents, as stated by "That never from this day / His will they'll take away." Final verse discusses James' conflicting relationship with his parents. James "battled constantly" with himself due to the fact that the faith his parents put on God didn't help any of them at the end: his dad abruptly left his family, and his mom died soon afterwards. After dust had settled, James was all by himself, contemplating committing suicide as stated by, "The old man then prepares / To die regretfully. " The chorus is loosely written, in which James states that had he thought contrary to the beliefs he was taught, he might have been able to save his mom life.

I like when people listen to meaningful songs that really is useful, try react to POD - Youth of the nation, 2000's song, so deep, so true, so sad stories, shows dark side of society and young people struggles. Keep listen to great songs! Now are so much songs without deep meaning, only music with catchy prhases. Unforgiven is little sermon so everyone can learn from it.

Full disclosure. The picture is of my husband. So this is coming from a woman’s perspective. Watched your special video from six days ago. Having been married for 35 years, let me just share something with you. You will go through difficult times. All relationships that last do. There are four things that are the most important, I think. First, respect. If you ever lose respect for the other person, the relationship is over. Disrespect, especially to a man, will kill a relationship more surely than anything else. It goes both ways, but to a man, respect is everything from his partner. Second, open and honest communication between you. Without communication, misunderstandings multiply. Problems cannot be solved and a relationship is doomed. Sometimes you are just so effing tired that you just don’t have the energy to talk things out. Do it anyway. Take the time even when it kills you. Too many people think if you love someone then the relationship should be easy. And when it gets hard, they bail. A successful, long-term relationship takes work, and you have to be willing to put in the time and effort. If something is bugging you, and your partner asks you “what is wrong”, and you say “nothing”, when that’s a lie.....that is cutting off communication. If someone asks you what is wrong, and you say “I shouldn’t have to tell you. If you loved me, you would know.” That’s a killer of relationships. Your partner cannot read your mind, and shouldn’t be expected to. Third is forgiveness. When one of you screws up (and you will because we ALL do) and sincerely asks for forgiveness, don’t punish them with silence, or withdrawing. Forgive them, so that when you screw up, you will be forgiven. And lastly, ego. It’s hard, but try to not make your ego be more important than the relationship. It’s hard....sometimes REALLY hard, but sometimes being right is not as important as the relationship. Sometimes it’s a choice be being “right” and being alone, or letting something slide and being together. And this applies to both partners and cannot be one-sided. It takes courage to be in a relationship, because you have to open yourself and be vulnerable to one another. Owning up to something feels dangerous because it makes you vulnerable and your’e afraid the other person will take advantage of your vulnerability. But take the risk. It’s a matter of trusting your loved one to not take advantage of your vulnerability. Anyway.....sorry to go on so long. But you guys are young, and I’m old, and i like to think I’ve gained some wisdom from being on the planet for awhile. I wish you both every happiness. Put in the work. Believe me....it is worth it. Blessings.

Wonderful reaction! We have a son and daughter about your age. We had preconceived ideas about what our son should do with his life but we saw our “ideas” were not his and our “ideas” were slowly killing him. We switched gears and told him to follow his dreams. We realized maybe his path won’t be easy but it is his path to create. We are here to love him regardless. I grew up in the 70s and 80s and this was my music, it’s amazing how you sometimes forget the lessons you jammed out to. You get caught up with life, you start a family. You want your kids life to be easier, but the reality is we can not make it easier because everyone has the right to learn through trial.
