I love watching a Metallica fan develop. It's like seeing an infant slowly coming of age. Master of puppets, flailing arms and legs, some slobber bubbles here and there. Next is One, you roll over on that belly and look at what's around you. Then Fade To Black, up on all fours and crawling around like champs. And now, For Whom The Bell Tolls. Standing on your own two feet, going from the place to place, pulling shit off the coffee table and going through kitchen cabinets. Time for your first day of school. Go now, young Metallica toddlers, and listen to Creeping Death. Look deep inside and try to grasp hold the riffs and changes throughout this epic song. God bless.

Fun fact: The "bell" you hear? It's not a bell, it's a metal hammer striking an anvil. This was recorded in 1984, no Pro Tools back then so they had to do that shit from scratch back in the day.
@raifthemad
@raifthemad 3 года назад
I've struck some anvils throughout the years, never sounded anything like that. Since they have solid, brick like design, sound doesn't reverberate and last as long as with a bell like object. Same for hammers. It's more like a blink blink blink.
@stevendeible3789
@stevendeible3789 3 года назад
The "bell" is actually created by snapping the neck of the guitar. That solo in the intro is also a bass solo.
@lordcumulon
@lordcumulon 3 года назад
Steven Deible no it’s actually an anvil you can very easily google it, and also fun fact: if you separate the bass from the guitar during the first verse riff, you can clearly hear Cliff playing the wrong note over the guitar. You cant hear it in the song but its kinda funny to hear by itself.
@raifthemad
@raifthemad 3 года назад
@@lordcumulon In this video you can hear what striking an anvil sounds like. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-HBzYv1tzgSc.html Just because they said that they made the sound with an anvil, doesn't mean they did. Don't believe everything people say.
@lordcumulon
@lordcumulon 3 года назад
raifthemad I mean, you’re making a good point. You can very easily google what an anvil sounds like, but Flemming Rasmussen has already confirmed that it is in fact an anvil being hit by Lars himself. Granted, he does admit that its very likely that they added some type of effects to the sound in order to make it sound as big as it is. Heres what he says “We had an anvil in the studio, and Lars had to bang that; it could’ve been that or from a record of sound effects. But there was a really heavy, cast-iron anvil and a metal hammer, and we stuck them in an all-concrete room. He’d just go wang.” Heres the link to the whole interview. www.rollingstone.com/music/music-news/fighting-fire-with-fire-metallica-look-back-on-ride-the-lightning-243500/

I'm catching up on your reactions, I'm glad I watched them chronologically because it's quite funny how you evolved from being uncomfortable in the first reaction (especially Rheasia) and how you're really feeling the music now! I think most people don't like metal because they haven't really listened to it and their ears aren't used to it. It was definitely my case and I think it's the same for you guys. I like comparing metal with spicy food. It takes some getting used to, you can directly taste the heaviest music/hottest pepper and expect to like it, it needs to be progressive lol 😄

lol. I love these two! He was cracking me up and she's adorable too. That's great. See we aren't all so different. It's really just a musical story from an old war movie. It was literally five soldiers on a hill against a massive force. It was just describing their despair, but they were still fighting, while facing certain death. Great song! I'm glad they could appreciate the lyrics. It's actually rap rhyming words, just to a different beat..

Panama, Somalia, Sand Box, and a few other dust-ups... Metallica [and others] (By Walkman or Diskman) was companion and soundtrack. Dark is, as Dark does... Now I'm the "quiet old man" that gets doesn't take shit or give shit while getting along with most but trusting few. It's good enough, because some never got the chance to get this far. It's good to remember, but better to carry on. _SUA SPONTE_

For some legendary metal, check out Iron Maiden. Their music is like a history lesson that rocks and their singer is top shelf. "Aces High" "The Trooper' "Run To the Hills" "Flight Of Icarus".......etc., are all bangers that tell a historic tale. I bet you'll love it.

"No man is an Island, intire of it selfe; every man is a piece of the Continent, a part of the maine; if a Clod bee washed away by the Sea, Europe is the lesse, as well as if a Promontorie were, as well as if a Mannor of thy friends or of thine owne were; any mans death diminishes me, because I am involved in Mankinde; And therefore never send to know for whom the bell tolls; It tolls for thee." Donne, 1624. That's what Hemingway used in the prologue of 'For Whom The Bell Tolls', written in 1939. The Spanish Civil War was an odd thing where basically it was socialists versus fascists... just before WWII kicked off, the soviets were backing the leftist Republican (nothing to do with ours, just 'loyal to the republic') forces and Franco's fascist/nationalist forces were backed by Germany. The latter were the ultimate winners, the Republicans being forced into the hills for guerilla fighting and tactics. A man by the name of El Sordo was performing a raid in support of a larger mission, and these 5 men were caught on a hilltop and surrounded. Fighting to the last, they shouted insults at the small plane that dropped the bomb... This is the song. That larger mission? Blow a bridge and sever a link the fascist forces... actually didn't even need any more. They'd already pushed through and around the area and were closing in on the main republican camp, so the fighters went and blew the bridge up anyways out of pride or out of some sense of mission. The book ends with the last man (an American, long story addressed in book) mortally wounded and laid out with his weapon waiting to ambush any troops that came by.

As a longtime music listener and enthusiastic metalhead, its great to see people who have not had the opportunity to be exposed to metal music or where metal was not culturally relevant enough to have reached their ears....to see them be open minded enough to give it a try and fall in love with the style is great. Metal transcends identity and sets ablaze the human spirit. Welcome Chris and Rheasia to if not the most agressively badassed rebellious and energized style of music known to our species. Heavy fuckin' metal! \m/ Iron strong community as well.

I LOVE seeing these! Unfortunately for me I came up from a time and place that this was all "angry crazy white boy music" and it wasn't even given a chance. So now when I see younger generations and multi cultured kids enjoying this stuff, I finally feel like YES! SEE! I've been trying to tell y'all this for 2 decades LMFAO. Enjoy it guys. Metallica is and always will be a staple in my music library. The first 3 albums before Cliff Burton are their absolute best work. The instrumental on Master of Puppets - Orion even won awards. Learn all of the first 3. These are albums you listen to from start to end without skipping or stopping.
