Pretty much. Fade To Black is a great song, but this part of To Live Is To Die evokes more emotion for me personally. And while I'm at it, I also want to say I think The Unforgiven is sadder than Fade To Black as well. At least to me it is.
I fully agree with you! I have always loved this song , pretty much more than almost every other song that I have ever heard ! This song, along with the entire Justice album, was so relevant to my life that while growing up, it was as if Metallica had written Justice as a soundtrack to my life personally! There is not a single note on that album that doesn't resonate with memories seamlessly and intricately explain the world that i lived in and grew up around in 1988 when "And Justice for All!" Thankfully came into my twelve lyear old life!
Forbidden Fursona cliff was 1000x better than Jason was and everything will be. Theory wise and skill set wise. Cliff was a near expert in music theory and bass playing. Jason was just a guitarist on bass
PotawatomiThunderNew i understand you, but still it’s so hard for me to decide between those two medleys. But yeah, every time I listen to this part I feel like they are digging a hole in my soul dude😕
Despite being the saddest part of Metallica compositions, it can save your life. This was my case, when I was after 1 suicide attempt, and was preparing for next one, and during that time I was listening this song non stop and I realised that at least some people would be in very dark place after my death, so I thought about everything once again and got help
It's actually Hetfield playing this solo!! On the official record anyway - Kirk plays it live.Fucking Hetfield, constantly surprising me. It does make a ton of sense though as I think Hetfield wanted to make a personal statement to Cliff.
yea man found out later it was james who wrote it. its so fucking powerful i wish hed write more solos. like james solo on the outlaw torn i could listen to that on loop for hours lol
@@ghost500e hang in there bud. Cherish the time you have with the people you value the most. Mines been gone 22 years. I'd give anything to hug her one last time and tell her I love her.
@@ghost500e this song is like a big comforter for all of us who’ve lost loved ones. My Dad definitely didn’t like heavy metal but I played this song for him when he was alive a he said to me something along the lines of “ maybe there is hope for you musicly this is beautiful “ of course he was talking about the classical parts but it was nice to know he was hearing and appreciating the same music as me. Very emotional song
I love Kirk, but my favorite Metallica solos are mostly actually James'. Especially this and Nothing Else Matters. They're so fucking...soulful is the only proper word.
Kirk's solos are awesome, but I've always prefered James's solos too. I love the order and melody in James's solos, as well as the emotion. That being said, some of my favorite Metallica solos are The Unforgiven I and II, Blackened, Fade To Black, etc etc.
And I think it probably shouldn't have needed bass. This song was James, Kirk, and Lars letting out their grief after Cliff died. The rest of And Justice for All felt empty and boring without Jason's bass tracks.
@@godzilla964 Lars: "drop it down another 68db." Mixer: *looking at james* "this guy's serious?" James: *shrugs* Lars: "I said, drop the bass down another 68db! I still can't hear my drums!" Mixer: "Okay! Okay! Geez." Jason: *:(*
@@godzilla964 listen to the tracks that ahdy khairat has remastered and remixed from this album. They're all far superior to the original mixes and there's adubile bass which makes them alot more heavier.
I love that Mikael Akerfeldt said if it weren't for this moment in the song then Opeth might not exist. If you imagine Opeth while listening to it it totally sounds like them.
For some reason it tends to works really well when metal groups incorporate elements from classical music into their songs. I mean, they are two COMPLETELY different genres, and yet they usually works great when they are combined together. I guess it's the same kind of phenomenon as how complement colours (red/green, blue/orange etc) usually look great together.
I wonder if people realize how much James has a deep understanding of his feelings, and music obviously is his release. In turn: he does it for all of us. What a gorgeous piece of music.
this song is, for me, the definition of the sentence "death magnetic". in a way, to live is to look in the eyes of death, feel fear and at the some time feel some kind of joy to be alive. fuckin crazy feelings. Rip cliff! you are genius
yeah, the beauty of life and the inevitability of death are things we usually think of as being distinct from one another. but they come in the same package. so it is fitting that this song sounds mournful, yet celebratory.
this makes me cry so much... its so touching because you can understand and feel the emotions and how they were hard on james, lars and kirk and the more you understand the feeling, the more it can touch to you
This song is the definition of how to tell a story without uttering a single word. Yes there is a poem section, but the reason it works is because of the rest of the song.
I get goosebumps hearing this part. No words at all and it can still make you cry and feel emotion. Imagining this at a funeral I definitely know people would be balling there eyes out
the solo at 1min is BEYOND WORDS!!! it brings so much memories back in late 90s when I was discovering metallica and metal music in general... so beautiful ! so hopeful !
Dear Dislikers, Don't dislike this video. If you don't like just leave, close RU-vid. This piece of the song means so much to us. We love this music and seeing dislikes hurts. Love Cliff now and forever
Would love this played at my funeral. Bought this album in 89’ when I was 12 and still pick it up often. Awesome to learn new things about the music that I’ve loved for so long here in the comments section from my metal brothers.
I'm a massive tallica fan and this song is my all time fave of theirs, goi ng back 30 years and it is still sooo melancholy it's unreal .. my fave metal track ever. Period. I'm 50 btw
Lads I am from Sri Lanka here we have curfew right now due to riots and I am trapped in a room while listening to this helps to keep my depression at minimum
Last night I almost lost someone very close to me, i felt like hell and I was screaming my lungs out to try letting everything out since crying wasn't enough. This part was just stuck in an endless loop in my head and I just felt so bad for almost losing my partner. I love you Kai, im glad you're still alive and with me
Metallica inspired to me take the guitar seriously. Despite me finding other inspirational bands and more technical bands this song still holds its horns like it did when I was a kid learning to play.
This song is like a farewell send off. You picture James and the guys holding back tears rocking while Cliff ascends into the rock n roll hall of heaven 🥲 godspeed Cliff Burton, we miss you dearly

I remember the first time i heard this part of To live is to die, i was so amazed aswell as overwelmed with sadness, this will always be one of my favourite instrumentals by my all time favourite band... Metallica....To Live Is To Die (For Cliff)
This was one of probably the first guitar parts I learned when I first started actually playing...still absolutely beautiful section and I still play it when I pick up any guitar almost unconsciously...
