The fact this man could play this well AFTER a full Slipknot set is a testament to how monstruously good he was. AND ON THE IOWA TOUR none the less. GOATED. No doubt
But you’re right, I’m a drummer and I can play many slipknot songs. But trying to imagine playing an entire set is unfathomable! Then like you said, going and filling in for part of a Metallica concert in the same night.. crazy
This was from 2004 Download festival in Donnington, England. Why would the IOWA tour have the BBC (the banner in the background) as one of the sponsors?!
The band is just having so much fun jamming with Joey, he's crushing it. Staying in time, fills are in rhythm, and he's throwing in some of his own signature snare and foot work. Definitely one of the best moments of his career to be able to play with his heroes. RIP #1
Such an amazing moment. Sure it stuck with Joey for the rest of his life. Another phenomenal talent we lost much too soon. Rest in peace, Joey, we sure miss you
Exactly! It was soo much heavy than Lars playing. Ulrich should retire back then and become only manager (the thing he done best for Metallica) and hire some more skilled musician.
@@makosh1299 they have played this song faster than this due to lars and James likes to speed it up a lot. Also props to joey for stepping in and saving the moment but his type of playing doesn't fit their style.
Dude its so awesome to know the fact that even though Joey is one of the greatest drummers in Metal and surpasses Lars by a lightyear, Joey would go back stage to his Slipknot band mates and ask "How am i doing?" Worried that he would mess up or look bad in front of his heros. He's such a humble person man.
Lars is definitely a great drummer, and he has great talent but as a musician idk... He has a big brain and he's amazing at what he does but what they did to Jason on AJFA was kinda f'd up. As a musician he's great but not enough to say he's better
@@jaymcbakerk No he is not! Lars cant play for shit. He is great in metallica but in no way is he a better musician than Joey Jordison. Lars is actually a really bad drummer.
Who just now came here after watching the story on Rock Feed, about Kirk remembering how Joey had tears of happiness in his eyes, after doing this? Joey was my favorite drummer of all time.
@@lionelhutz2427try to play correctly the drums in a slipknot concert. And right after that, play in a metallica concert. When you do that, you can talk whatever you want. Meanwhile just shut tf up.
I love how he is just like a little kid getting to jam with his favourite band with that amount of overplaying lol. I've lost count of how many times I have watched this video, R.I.P Joey
I can just imagine the massive smile Joey had behind the mask. Probably one of his personal highlights as a Metallica fan. Overplayed it but because he was literally having a blast!
It's funny how James, Kirk and Rob just come alive and give it a 110% with Joey on the skins. I bet St Anger would've been waaaaay better with Joey on the drums too. RIP Joey. You are very missed.
@Scylent Deth yeah, but let’s not forget that a lot of the terrible ideas that populate St. Anger came from Lars, such as “guitar solos are outdated”. Maybe if Joey was on the drums then the album would’ve been better
JOEY DID AN AWESOME JOB - BUT IN TERMS OF THE METALLICA FEEL AND VIBE THINK THAT DAVE LOMBARDO WOULD BE A BETTER REPLACEMENT FOR LARS ----- ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-96nV-x3jfLg.html
That afterlife super group is looking pretty good now. Joey Jordison and Cliff Burton drum and base rhythm section, Dimebag on guitars, Layne Staley and Chris Cornell on duel harmonies and guitar (Chris). Imagine the magic.
10:25 .. That smile on James face when Joey did his thing !! Creeping death in his style absolutely rocked !! RIP Joey .. this will always be one of the best moments in Music history.
If you've read the interview with Joey about this you know Lars literally bailed out last second and James was running around trying to find drummers to fill in, so they had to rebuild the set list on site and Joey had literally just come off stage when his drum tech said, "Hey James wants to talk to you". So given there was no time for rehearsal to get use to playing with each other and the fact that the drummers probably had to run back to their warm up kits throw on some headphones and got like 20 minute refreshers, it's amazing that it came out this good. True professionals.
@@ileanasantamaria2364 Lombardo definitely has better technique and he's more sophisticated, but Jordison is infinitely more impressive. As a drummer, I can't fathom how he can play with pure arm strength and those heavy ass drum sticks. Anyone can polish their chops through practice but Joey is a freak in his own league.
I feel so bad for James, Kirk and Rob. They had a short, sweet taste of what it's like to have a real drummer and after that, had to go back to playing with Lars 😭😭😭
@@leatherandtactel Exactly! Every band has a drummer which fits them. Lars is the founder of this band, he may not be technically very good drummer, he was a beast back then but he sucks at live shows these days. He is still good in the studio though, does all the arrangments and picks the right sounds for the songs. I like him, he may be an asshole sometimes when it comes to money but he fits the band.
@@BegetterVIIEVEN he isn't a poor drummer, I dont reckon you could do better. Am I wrong? Also doesnt lars have arthritis or something from his posture back in the day? Try play drums with arthritis and then see if you can talk poor drumming. He fits metallica perfectly, and he tries his best when he drums. And he is old, and before you say "(insert name) isnt old and he can drum" people age differently, so just enjoy the fact that lars is still able to drum nearly 40 years after he started
@@neddheadbedshedboom7805 Lmao, he doesn't even have arthritis, you spoon, he lacks consistency, tempo is all over the place, and just does unnecessary fills.
Joey filled in perfectly. He will forever be a LEGEND in the metal community. He stepped up and saved the biggest band's show. Amazing. LEGEND!!!! He showed them what it would be like with a REAL drummer!!!!
James' rhythm guitar and early 90's voice, Kirk's lead, Cliffs' bass, Jason's backup vocals, and Joey's drums. Could you imagine seeing that Metallica lineup? 🤯
@@JG31392black album is still arguably a great album, just not the same as the first four. even load and reload are arguably solid albums, same with st anger honestly. death magnetic and hardwired are also good albums, and 72 seasons was a good combo of all the sounds
This performance exemplifies the legacy of Joey Jordison. To play with arguably the greatest rock band of all time and ELEVATE their sound, wow. Rest in peace , Joey.
Lars greatest strength musically was always in informing the arrangement of the songs. Without his input classic songs would have been mediocre to lame. That said he could continue to do that and have a much gnarlier drummer write and play drum parts and Metallicas metal cred would be higher.
If this is not proof of how legendary Joey is then I don't know what is. He was a beast in Ulrich's drum set. Pure "holy shit" moment. RIP Joey Jordison
More like Joey getting to play For Whom the Bell Tolls with Metallica is like him ripping Excalibur from the stone and immediately using it to cleave a mountain in half in a flash of otherworldly light leaving Merlin speechless.
My favorite story was between songs, when Joey left the stage he’d pull off his mask and ask his band mates in slipknot “how am I doing”? They said “ killing it”. I love Joey had respect for Metallica and was humbly wanting to do well. Beautiful performance.
Meanwhile in the afterlife....... Keith Moon: The new kid is a maniac......I like him already!! John Bonham: Boy's got a lot of fire in him. Neil Pert: Heheh! He's gonna fit right in, welcome home, Joey.
@@starieyes7390 It was insane!! I remember seeing an interview that backstage he was freaking out because he'd always wanted to play with Metallica and almost chickened out when they asked him, but Corey and the band egged him on and he got up there and killed it!
***** i like joey jordison to be honest but man its not that hard, yet he fucs up . Lars rules even with his lack of perfection. he give us the best metal albums to date. Fuc$ posers
Literally never knew this happened and I SAW them on this tour in Grand Rapids MI….huge slipknot fan at the time too…crying right now and yeah holy fuck that sequence was insane, those fills….wow…listened to Metallica since I was in the womb in 89…slipknot fan since 03…wow
Erick Thor You really wanna go there? He can still play songs alrighty, though he needs some massaging after conserts. The only thing that has deranged in his playing is the intensity, he is quite old and can't hit the drums as hard as he did, though in drums hitting everything as hard as possible isn't necessary, tempo and good groove is the base, though FUCK Lars doesn't care much about tempo.
you know.. i can see that happening.. i believe there will come a time when lars wants to call it quits on drums and but james and rob keep will going.. not sure about kirk with his dementia..
The dynamics are so dramatically different. It's so interesting to hear his style with this band. When they were rehearsing this with Joey, I'm sure Kirk probably said. " It's the double kicks in between that are fucking with me".
I love/ respect that joey doesn't push the boundaries of Metallica too much, how ever is able to put forth his own signature sound. Joey, wherever you now brother thank for being there for us, and setting the tempo. I love you bro
Watching Joey play in Metallica is incredible in itself, but what we are actually seeing is a dream of his childhood come to life right before our eyes. Absolute Legend. #1 whether it's this world or the next that the 'wind spills before him'.
Joey's version of Creeping Death is my all time favorite! Also, I can't help but smile when James can't stop himself from chuckling from Joey's drumming in Seek And Destroy... man, I wish I was at that concert!
Hes just an outstanding drummer and incredibly professional. How many great bands he has covered, how many slipknot songs he has written. So well respected and rightly so. My number 1 drummer of all time and if he is not yours, he is certainly in the conversation. Lars is so bad 😂 all the years practice as we. Probably why he is so mad all the time.
I was at this gig. It's the only time I've ever seen Metallica, and it was awesome because Joey Jordison, Dave Lombardo, and Lars's drum tech played the entire show, and none of them knew any of the recent bad Metallica songs, so it was all Black Album and earlier. If you were gonna see Metallica after about 1993, this was the show to catch, man.
Basically the drummers choose the songs / set list, due to what they knew to could play at short notice. There were about 4 drummers who played in total. Amazing gig glad I was there.
Joey was a really astonishing person. He probably enjoyed this stage more than Metallica itself. Was huge fan of them - and the only one with the guts to play with them when the official drummer wasn't available. I still think god ass is shaking every night over his pieces in heaven while he stages.
eetuxor ok! Who played it then in 89’??? LARS!! Yes I agree he’s went down hill somewhat but he’s 50 some maybe close to 60. He’s been rocking a long time. Give the guy a break. To hear people compare him with Joey Jordison is funny. He’s maybe late 20’s early 30’s and that’s the style he plays all the time!! And Lombardo, he’s killer also. He’s been playing for Slayer for ages. Hard and fast. That what they do. Metallica is a totally different kinda band. Yes! Heavy and fast for sure but also melodic and technical at times as well. Lars has a style all his own and for anyone to compare his playing with these other cats is not cool. Then CRAPPING ALL OVER HIM after helping put out many albums over the years(MUTI-PLATINUM ALBUM AT THAT)!! Is just not right!! He’s one of the founding Father of The Metal scene in the U.S.! The guy still ROCKS!! Give credit where credit is due! All these people that cut on him until you join or start a band, be the drummer, sell Millions of Albums, travel around the world many, many times, play for millions and millions of people, win awards, and so on and so on, AND HAVE NO PRIOR TRAINING ON THE DRUMS!!! THEN HUSH ABOUT LARS! JUST HUSH!!!!
I agree Metallica wouldn't be Metallica without Lars, but not because of his drumming, but because of his skills as a songwriter. His ability to put together these killer songs with James is what makes Metallica unique, not his ability as a drummer. He was a better drummer when he was young, for sure. Some of his stuff on Justice is insanely good, but I'm not sure if he has truly ever been able to play those songs live in the same manner as they sound on the record (the whole band struggled to play some of the songs from that album even at the time it came out, though). Other drummers at Lars's age are still as good or even better as they were in their 20's. Lars is not. Also he has some serious trouble playing on time, not to mention his weird fills and all around boring drumming. But yeah, he was better when he was younger.
I've seen this so many times and I still get chills. Metallica is my favorite band I could never imagine playing drums for them...Joey's gone but definitely not forgotten
This is the first time I’ve ever heard this and how amazing!! I first saw Slipknot at a nightclub after they had released their self titled album. Joey was the most talented member of Slipknot as well as one of the greatest metal drummers of all time. I’m so glad that he got to play with Metallica before he got sick. He killed it!! Poor Lars was probably almost out of a job after missing only one night 😂
joey jordison is the reason why i love heavy metal, you can see he didnt want to steal the limelight he can play harder than that, no hair flicking just loving music and doing what he does best. gives me goose bumps everytime i watch or listen to joey. miss you all the way from the land down under Australia
In some parts, Joey was trying his best to keep them all together at a steady tempo, but he was forced to adjust to keep in time with them. I think he did a great job, and I like how he improvised on the rolls and fills. I think Dave Lombardo had more success keeping the overall tempo steady on Battery and Four Horsemen. Always my favourite thrash drummer ever!
