Not really, most of them are members of the metallica club, hence they know their shit about Metallica and the role Mercyful Fate played in Metallica's history. Probably a lot better than you actually.
What's great to know is that King, days before that show, was recovering from an operation where he almost died, and the fuckin' man was standing right in front of the audience, singing in tune like in the old days, goddamit
Graveyard Classics I saw him last week and it sounded as close to the record as I’ve ever seen an artist do. At 58 years old, he was magnificent to say the least, put on a show that put most 20 year olds in bands I’ve seen to shame.
@@robacdc1977 those are the benefits of quitting smoking, just listen the contrast of voice between give me your soul album and masquerade of madness and current performances, plus king knew he had to fix himself before going public again with another album and was well worth it his long hiatus without new material!
Casey Jones YES! my thoughts too. The majority there probably don't realize how lucky they are to be in the same room with King and crew. True legends!...
Even though Metallica is the ultimate success story for metal (and King's point is correct, they DID open the door for a lot of heavy metal bands), it's interesting how James and the crew act around King Diamond/Mercyful Fate. There is a definite level of respect that has nothing to do with the relative success of each band. You can just see the way James launches into the riffs (and the vocal contributions too) - he is a fan of Mercyful Fate and loves their songs. It's cool to watch (as a fan of both bands).
you make a very valid point my friend. These guys have not been on stage in 18 years but do you really think that for a Metallica gig they did a whole lot of rehearsal? Mercyful Fate was one of the pioneers of metal and as you stated they need no explanations from a bunch of punk kids who barely hit puberty it's like telling God that he fucked up on the Ten Commandments
They are metal fans. Last year during their tour, Hetfield was wearing a cut on stage where he had the patches of something like 20 metal bands. I remember seeing the following patches during the show: Witchfinder General, Vardis, Sweet Savage, Mercyful Fate, Budgie, Slayer, GBH, The Misfits, Tigers of Pan Tang, Weapon, Angel Witch among quite other bands i don't remember of...
I love that KD could sing like this after a triple bypass. It may not be his hottest performance, but I'd be lucky if I could sing like this at all. Period. I don't think anyone could do it.
OH MY GOD!!!!! How had I never seen this?!?! HAIL TO THE KING, he sounds unbelievable!!! Plus the guitar tones are just insanely sick and NOT helping my thirst for a Mesa Rec!!!
@@brpadington Was the Mercyful Medley recorded with a Wiz or a Diezel? I feel like I read somewhere it was a Diezel VH4… I could be wrong though. Its dusty back there in whatever cubby of my brain that came out of…
I love Denner and Shermann. They are the Downing and Tipton of Denmark to me. Denner is also super humble and takes Hammets lead and acknowledges him. What true gents Mercyful Fate are and always have been!!
So glad that they had Michael Denner and Hank Sherman play their own solos. No matter how well you know the notes, there's sooooo much to be said for idiosyncrasy. In fact I can remember how frustrated I used to get 16 years ago when I was trying to learn Mercyful Fate solos and wondering why I could not sound like Denner and Sherman. Notice how spooky Sherman sounds and how greasy and pained Denner is? I mean, Mercryful Fate could not have been what they were without those sounds back in the early 80's.
I've been trying to get that "sound" ever since I first heard "The Oath"...The solos on that album are haunting, not just from the keys they are played in and the inter-dynamics between Denner/Sherman......but also the acoustics of the recording venue...they sounded like they were playing in a cavern deep in the bowels of Hades...That album (to me) is the essence of Heavy music,...captured.
@@slownlo I agree too! There is something special, in the sound of the old Mercyful Fate albums... Particularly the sound of the guitars. Really a band in a league of its own. Different from all the others. I always am surprised when, talking with some younger metalheads (I am from an older generation... ☹️), they tell me that they do not know this group !!! 🤬 Mercyful Fate should have had the same fame and success as the biggest names in Metal... Like Iron Maiden and Judas Priest... Yeah, but at least we know how much they are good! Greetings from Italy!
@@BrunoCAGAS are you unfamiliar with King Diamond or Mercyful Fate? Yeah, his voice isn't as powerful as it usually is but it sounds great for his age and considering he had a triple bypass recently. Now that he's healed he sounds insanely good. Check King Diamond's Twitter page for clips from their set at Graspop 2018...shit sounds amazing now.
@@BrunoCAGAS one last thing...fuck you, dude. King Diamond is a legend and you're a random little shit kid online. Okay that's all. Said my peace. Now shut the fuck up and enjoy some amazing metal.
For those of us that were around in '83-'86 Metallica were one of many great bands and they weren't the biggest game: Slayer, Venom, Mercyful Fate, Possessed, Destruction, Celtic Frost, Exodus...I still see it that way, record sales aren't the main thing. This is the coolest thing Metallica has done in decades--why no DVD sets?
I've watched this numerous times and Denner nodding to Kirk saying " Yeah, that's right " during the Into The Coven intro gets me every time. Absolute legend giving lessons to another ON STAGE! Just awesome.
Well no one should say shit about king´s voice in this performance, throat issue, bad night, it hapens, just remember one year before this jam he had a serious heart surgery, so critics better shut tha fak ap, go listen to an album such as abigail before you say shit. face a triple heart surgery then face the stage and do better before you diss ...
I just listen to the original studio versions of all of these songs ("Satan's Fall", "Curse Of The Pharaohs", "A Corpse Without Soul", "Into The Coven", "Evil") and then coming to watch this was better than expected.
The thing about this medley, is that it basically does what Mercyful Fate was always excellent at; throwing a massive number of mind-melting riffs into a single song.
Long live the King! I love the way this guy uses his head voice and falsetto effects with his own vocal chords!!!! I hope Merciful Fate makes a comeback. I think is one of the best bands of the 80's Metal. My all time favourite song by them is "A Dangerous Meeting"
Yeah, gotta go with that. Dangerous Meeting is one of the greatest purely metal songs ever recorded. An all time favorite of mine. The other is Desecration of Souls. More metal than anything the big four ever did. I said Heavy Metal, not thrash. What a great video. Fate and 'tallica together. They had NO IDEA how lucky they were.
Lars: 4 of the 5 guys of that band are standing right there audience: Korn? Avenged Sevenfold? SOAD? Lars: Please welcome Mercyful Fate! audience: who is that painted guy ?!?!?!?
10 years after this video was up loaded, it just magically appears now.. Never knew Metallica played with Merciful fate. Brings back memories from listening to them in the 80's.
Rest in Rock and Roll Heaven Timi Holm "Grabber"Hansen !!! Thanks So Much for your Great Bass Work in Mercyful Fate and King Diamond !!! Salud y Vida Pa'lante !!! Cheers and Life On !!!
Hank Sherman and Michael Denner were an amazing duo. I still listen to "Don't Break The Oath" quite often. I used to think Hank was the lead, but I found out Denner did plenty of leads too. They were fantastic players.
Man he can sing fast. 3:07 Long black coats a shelter for the rain Their load must get through Now bats are leaving their trees They're joining the call Seven Satanic Hell Preachers Heading for the hall Seven seconds! And he spices it up further with the ultrahighs. It's kind of like Halford.
The all came to ear Nothing Else Matters in live, and they got to see a legendary heavy metal band they never heard of, and probably never ever will again...
Some commenters are using the wrong standard. Extreme vocalists like King Diamond performing live don't have the advantage of several takes and the mastering process used for albums. The more extreme the vocals, the more likely the singer is to be "off". Add to that the fact that King's been doing this for over thirty years, and it's inevitable that sometimes they won't "sound like the album".
Kim was 55 years old when this was recorded. Somebody thinks a 55 year old should hit the notes the same as when they were 25? He was damned close 30 years later. Let's see them get anywhere near that close at 55. Hell, he's 63 now and on tour in November. Stick that in your pipe and smoke it.
It's funny how life works. I'm almost 50 now. Some of my friends don't "get" my music tastes. They're listening to "Duran Duran" or some such garbage and I'm still tuned in to Mercyful Fate/Crowbar/Pantera etc... I'm also a classically trained pianist...so they really can't figure me out!lol! I heave slightly when I hear the newer "metal" bands. Bleah...they all sound the same to me. Give me Maiden, Priest, KD...you know the rest. "IF IT'S TOO LOUD...YOU'RE TOO OLD"!! Love seeing bands get together like this. You can tell Metallica truly appreciates KD and the boys and their help when they were first starting out. ROCK ON!!
So... youre classically trained and call Duran Duran 'crap'? Im not buying it, because Im a musician and while I can see not liking Duran Duran, I cant really see a trained musician calling it 'crap'. Especially not a pianist.
They're crap to me. Then again ALL music is simply judged through the ears of the listener. It and the electro-80's as a whole are nails on the chalkboard to me. No redeeming musical quality to most of it IMHO. They were as popular for their looks as their sound back in the days of "Tiger Beat" magazines and such.
+TakeDeadAim Then youre definitely not 'classically trained', because such training is based in objective qualities, of the aural arts, which is exactly opposite, of everything you just said.
TakeDeadAim I can't believe you know people that still listen to Duran Duran. At least with 80s era metal there is a distinct sound you can't find in today's music.
This show was 55 miles away from me and I had just watched Metallica earlier in April that year at the big four in Indio. Can’t believe I missed this show . I’ve seen King Diamond a few times, but never had the opportunity of seeing merciful fate but that’s one band that’s still on my list to see. Love them and this would’ve been incredible.
This is the most amazing video that came up in my RU-vid stream on Halloween. I LOVE Merciful Fate! They were always friends with Metallica through Lars. Great job both bands doing this AMAZING poppuorie of MF!
Good to see Mercyful Fate onstage. Saw King Diamond 2015 Mayhem Fest and going to buy a ticket for Psycho Las Vegas 2022, as Mercyful Fate will be there. 🤘🎸😈💀
Oh HELL yes, that line-up is absolutely the TIT'S! Fate and Metallica on the same stage at the same time just rocking it out. Thank you for posting this for all of us to enjoy my friend, good stuff!
