The differences are subtle, but Phyllite is one of the more difficult to identify. You were close with choosing Slate-but unfortunately not correct this time. Slate is barely reflective like a blackboard, while phyllite has more of a reflective surface sheen than slate (w/o being too sparkly)…. Often, seeing a variety of the same rock type helps to learn exactly what key features are important.
