People are out their minds, the reason actually land in the real world has had an increase of price over time is due to it being finite and on the other hand you’ve got a digital online space where you can create as much virtual space as imaginable

This is so sad. How about we invest all this money into actually bettering our planet. Maybe then we won’t have to escape somewhere else… this is after all escapism.

My question is: what's stopping me from making my own meta server where I can program in as much or little land as I want, where I want, and when I want? And, why does the location of the land matter when you're able to teleport/fast travel your avatar wherever you want? This whole thing seems ridiculous. Does anyone actually want to live in the metaverse 🤣

Ok someone tell me why they are dropping millions on a "game" that doesn't even look better than minecraft? Pay attention to the people and corporations that are investing in this joke of an idea and cross-check that against the companies that you are personally invested in. When their naivety at investing in such a worthless venture is exposed, the whip crack of reality is going to be harsh and the market correction will be brutal.

Nope. This is based on artificial scarcity, the point of the 'metaverse' is to free us from physical constraints of the type that makes particular geographical locations or adjacency valuable. Only someone who fails to grasp this would bother 'investing' in this. Like with any bubble based on a consensus about value you might be able to make money from it for a while but eventually it will be revealed to have no intrinsic value.

Its all boils down to one thing: Psychology. Entertainment is going to be the biggest industry in future because people just like to be entertained by nature. And the longer you do it, you get addicted to it. We've been evolving from simplest calls and texts, to live streaming and social media and trust me you, people will embrace Metaverse. Remember, the dopamine and other chemical reactions that happens when we interact with physical things is the same when interacting with a virtual world. And that is why Metaverse and VR is the future.

I just worry about kids being addicted to this artificial augmented reality more than nature & family time. 😢

In the original concept of the metaverse - in Snow Crash, the whole land was owner by a single organisation. The author saw this coming since 1992. I hate how greed destroys some really cool concepts

Yes I do think there will be a Shopify of the metaverse who provides you with a startup basic store that you can host your products and meet people in a shopping mall. All this in a virtual landscape but I don't think people are going to overpay when these platforms can be duplicated replicate it and create it until the demand is met. Don't get caught up in the hype.

I love how this screams the Investor class has absolutely zero perception of quality, as long as they can sell a tall tale that makes them a new type of money they'll lie in order to sell it.

According to the owner of the company I work for, this single quarter has been more profitable than the last 6 combined, all thanks to "inflation." Which is to say, he heard there was inflation and jacked our prices by 25%, then blamed inflation. I have to assume this is not uncommon.

Space in the metaverse is for apps. I believe that the space will be valued based on the quality of the apps and games hosted within that space, not literal area. It's the valuation of those apps( or companies) within the metaverse land. The area used maybe just for representation. And ofcourse your value depends on your friends and neighbors too.

Few observations/ questions: - If it's a made up digital land, why doesn't every parcel have a great location? It seems stupid to mimic the same location/ geographical issues in the metaverse! - If the companies are going for downtowns in the digital world, isn't it the opposite of 'decentralized' as a keyword they are going for? - there isn't a 'land rush' because you can opt out of the platform that's selling the digital real estate and not buy it. Compare it to the real world where you can't opt out. In the real world, it is a definite finite resource and if you choose to not buy a piece of real estate, you can't 'code' it up. Not against it, but this just looks silly!

Sorry is this not just “Second Life” that I just played as a kid? It was a great concept and interesting world but still… you can always create more hubs with land.

The risk of buying into a particular platform would be if the platform becomes unsuccessful. They could just pull the plug and its gone. However, the use of a land tax should bring in enough revenue to keep it going.

This reporting segment lacked a lot of fundamentals.... 1) Land in the real world is finite, digital "land" can be infinitely reproducible 2) Virtual meeting with people is not much more "human" (ie. can create anonymous avatars) 3) Metaverse is just an online social video game The whole reason cryptocurrency took off is due to the fundamental principles of Blockchain technology. Everyday people want to protect their financial position from inflation, corruption from governments and financial institutions, find ways to avoid unfair fees on remittances and from market brokers, and just trade a currency (crypto) not controlled by any entity but amongst humanity... it was about solving the Trust problem ... p.s. US fiat money even engraved "In God we Trust" on their paper money...

The Metaverse is definitely here to stay. We can´t even grasp what will be possible in the near future. We´re building Casinos in diffferent Metaverses right now (Sandbox and Decentraland), purchased virtual land (worth over 300K USD) and have a team of builders designing a "Las-Vegas" Style Casino. The value of a property is mostly determined by its location, supply demand balance and to some degree availability of water resources. The value is enhanced by other intangible factors as view, beauty and perceived growth prospects. I would never buy land in any metaverse, for supply and demand is controlled by an outside entity and hence they reap most the benefits. Metaverse theoretically allows a user to instantly teleport from one location to another, so I may have a residence in a virtual Andean village, but will be able to be present with my colleagues in the virtual meeting room at metaverse NY. So value of location shouldnt matter. And theoretical metaverse land resource is virtually unlimited, hence supply and demand doesnt matter (only to be artificially constrained by Facebook or Microsoft). The land can be constructed with any view as one likes, again constrained for profit by Facebook or Microsoft.

I think it would be really interesting if Metaverse became the virtual connection to the real world. Essentially, you could visit the actual store virtually, and buy products that ship to your location. Have services provided to you on a real time basis, with a 3D world of 4k - 8k. Video conferencing in your avatars. Playgrounds, gaming grounds, cryptocurrency etc etc, the future is most likely very virtual and I'm actually excited for it. It will probably take over 10 years though as just like the optimists thought the driverless car would be here, it is not after a decade.

How big is the metaverse? Also, why are people only wanting to build 3D objects on a 2D plan? Why are we not creating hyper-dimensional spaces? If the film 'Inception' could be imagined, then why limit the metaverse to something that only replicates reality?

Isnt the Metaverse unlimited ?, as in supply can be created at will. Its not like it needs to be limited to a planet size, otherwise it would be called "Metaplanet".

This is such a scam- if you want "real estate" you need a solid player base. The only reason to play this game is to buy/sell land, so why wouldn't I just play a real game/verse that actually provides something else. How are boomers/"journalists" falling for this. I'm so glad I have common sense.

All this does is further prove why you should actually invest into real real estate, real land, real businesses, etc. This is insane and you're betting on people strapping in their VR goggles to live out their lives.

Maybe see the metaverse as more of a convenience..for example if you don't want to drive to the store you can just walk around in the walmart metaverse and shop and your items will be delivered and it can also lower street traffic in the process that's just one example..its your choice at the end of the day but sometimes you will want to use that convenience. I personally don't like going to the DMV so I would prefer to go in the metaverse DMV if possible it will be more fun 😀

Why create a virtual land where there is huge disparity in wealth just like the real world? Surely create something that is more equitable if it can be designed as such?

This metaverse real estate thing will never work out as long as there isn't one unified metaverse world, and something in the unified metaverse world that provides a unique service unobtainable in the real world.

The only imagination i have right now for this is for me to attend a virtual concert where the artists are customizable, we can choose which era we want (sorry, old bands fan here), the look of the artists will be exactly like the way they used to be (maybe using unreal engine?) but other factors like the vibe of the crowd, audio has to be totally immersive.. other than that, im not into it..

Just goes to show that even in a world where abundance is infinite, these people will create an artificial scarcity.

Is there some missing logic here? The reason for real world property value is true scarcity as in there is exactly only so much surface on earth or in certain region. Mean while in a digital space it's virtually limitless.

So it’s basically creating virtual shopping centres, and new ways of getting people immersed in to e-commerce under the guise of some magical land where you can socialise with your friends.

How is this different than Second Life?

This is just a hype. Similar concepts had happened on virtual world of various games in gaming industry since 90s and is still on going. Sure, some addicts with the money would spend to acquire virtual land, goods, items, services, and etc. However, once the honeymoon period is passed, either the developer or users leave.

I'm not even sure why anything still surprises me these days. Back when I was in a highschool, people who played pokemon were seen as nerds. All of a sudden summer of 2016 rolls around, and literally MILLIONS of people are running around in real life playing Pokemon Go. At least, us nerds went to bed at night when we played, but people were literally running around at every hour of the day trying to catch virtual pokemons. Also in highschool, I used to play a game called runsecape, where you could even build your own house in the game, and train all kinds of skills and go on quests, and play side games, etc, etc; Some of the hardcore gamers even used real currency to buy in-game currency. Back then of course only the "NERDS" played those games, NOW we have the metaverse, and people are literally paying upwards of hundreds of millions of REAL LIFE currency to purchase virtual land, and they talk about running out of space. The lesson to learn here is, ignore people who try to bring you down because of your little niche. One day they will be the ones scrambling to get what you already had and had moved on from!

This is like the tenth major news story I've seen about the metaverse in the past month. As someone who grew up playing Roblox, I offer an alternative to blowing thousands of dollars on cryptocurrency and virtual land: Play Roblox. For free. You get literally as much land as you can develop. And frankly, in my opinion, many Roblox games look a lot better than what's showcased here.

correct me if am wrong but buying virtual land is like buying web space from a web hosting company. It exists in a real life server where there is hard drives but we interact with it virtually, so why are they spending so much money on a hard drive space?? 1terrabyte is more than enough for a virtual interactive mall.
