Understand Metazoo didn't "die". In reality it did exactly what it was designed to do and fulfilled its purpose. It was never a game; it was a vehicle to extract free pandemic money from rubes into the hands of early adopters. Mission accomplished, time to build the next vehicle.
Problem is that it was never actually a game, it was always first and foremost an over pump and dump scheme for the early access/early adopters who where handed free shit. Never had a genuine community or young players and always locked out kids from the start
really felt like kind of a sad way for poor people to open "vintage" type packs because all the big whale investors ate up all the old Pokemon packs, now even up to sun and moon its still too expensive
I called this shit from the start. Was called a hater. I brought up how creating a TCG when the Pokémon hype was starting to take off, was clearly a cash grab. Now as the cash grabs for pokemon are dying, this entire tcg is crashing and now “done for”. Talk about irony.
i play the game, and it’s better gameplay than MTG or pokemon and i have played all 3. deck building is the most fun, off the wall shit can be viable. fuck the “value” just like the creators said apparently, the game itself is fantastic
@@mototrey though the gameplay may have been good, management is the ultimate reason the card game disappeared. Mismanagement of set releases, lack of player payouts, and over promising/under delivering consistently are the most glaring reasons for the rug pull identifiers. Clear distract with a positive message to the Metazoo community, while planning its discontinuation/demise.
You mean to tell me the company who ran their TCG business like NFTs/crypto aren’t doing so well anymore? I thought base set was going to the moon? Wait no one cares about metazoo? Good because I never did either🤣
exactly. When the bulk of people interested were just people looking to use it as a way to get rich, ignoring any fundementals of the game and the cards themselves? Bad times. I do like the concept. I dislike everything else.
Same, seemed like something crafted specifically for people somehow anti-pokemom as if it detracted from it or made some kind of power statement by owning the worthless junk
Shame. I really liked the old water colour art style they had, alot of the products/etbs & card sleeves looked cool to keep, alot of people are being harsh on the style but idk theres a cute charm to it, love the starie holo pattern that they have also :( Kinda always had a feeling they would go under though...
I lost it for them with the frog man statue situation. I feel bad for the fans and I’m close friends with a lot of them, all good people. I’ve known Kris and his wife for years and they are so kind. But yeah Mike on the other hand, NOPE.
They came in the scene at the perfect time to grab up a ton of money and decided to leave at the first sign of weakness, in terms of the TCG economy. It is sad to find out they only had intentions to gobble up all that FOMO money until that wasn't possible anymore.. I legit feel bad for collectors who invested anything in this ridiculous excuse of a card game..
I mean everyone could tell it wasn't a good card game by how it was run. All the people who thought it would go to the moon as well, just like crytpo and NFT bros in 2021, were smoking some hard cope as it started to fall apart this last year.
@@OpossumBud Aye, I'm only really of YT so you're forever the winner for me lol. Rudy just posted his video, gonna hop over and see what he has to say. Would love to see your take on his video since he's been Metazoo since the beginning.
@@OpossumBud Nah my guy. I come from the Magic space. Look, if they really wanted to, they could just make a set dedicated to cryptids. And they already have strong IP collabs coming out in Marvel and Final Fantasy. They do not need to take on Metazoo.
It had some cool artwork and the concept was good. Much better than sports cards and other tcg that had the backing of an already established IP. There definitely was value and potential
What killed them was the fact that the Hello Kitty set you mentioned was on both TCG and eBay for $250 for less than a month and TCG discounted it to $150 and gave everyone that bought it their $100 back. This was a real sign that things were going downhill fast for them
All memes aside, I loved the idea of metazoo with cryptids and saw alot of potential early on. My best time were opening cn1 thru wilderness and I started to slowly back out after hearing various aligations. I have a good amount of slabs/ cards that were higher end that I don't plan on selling simply bc I love what I have, although I was glad to part with the KS BB when I did. I hope this comes back one day but if it doesn't l, that's ok. Good video
My condolences to all six people who played and collected this crappy game. They designed a TCG during a period of time where everybody was trapped in their house and everybody was overpaying for everything because they had free money coming in from the government they thought they could come up with something catchy like Pokemon or Yu-Gi-Oh but the game had no history and nostalgia. It was doomed from the beginning I remember watching streamers and try to sell this product and the people that collect a cons just standing there bored out of their mind completely alone or not selling a single thing when I walked by. I have heard of many unfulfilled orders on their part sounds like it was poor management and a bit of a scam on the Creator and ownership's part and now they're looking to dump off their IP on some unwitting idiot. Wizards of the Coast are absolute fools if they even consider this
Such a happy day in the TCG world. Couldn’t happen to a better person. Michael was a greedy liar out to make some quick money. This news makes my day 🤣🤣.
Now the real question is even if it does come back, even if someone saves it why should we trust them again? Why should we let them shit on us again? Would would want to be involved after the shadiness?????
Oh man, I’ve totally bought into metazoo the past couple days. Found really cheap boosters to rip. This story is so interesting, I hope you continue to cover the drama
Not even worth it. Its like talking politics. People get so dead set on something they are literally willing to die on that hill while looking like an absolute idiot to most people
@@N-B-MMA Yeah you're 100% correct. I wasn't actually gonna do it though lol.. Just a thought popped in my head.. "Like, how many times I tell these mfs"
This is what happens when you focus on collecting and investment for a tcg before you know the game. Also mike doesn't seem like too good of a guy. Hopefully all the employees find new employment easily tho
You always talk about controversal things but idk you never mentioned that Metazoo always had the "NFT rug" vibes. Not to mention their art is awful and who in the right mind would get into that game. Metazoo had little to none of "fans". It always seemed a TCG for older cryptobros.
As someone who genuinely likes Metazoo this sucks but it was bound to happen, this complete shitshow for the past year all pointed towards this happening, best redeem the bear walker board now
Bud, as a once fan of this game due to the concept and the art it’s actually relieving to see them close their doors. I am beyond thrilled. Not only did gary king Pokémon as he called himself, Steve aoki and Mike Waddell only cared about the money. In the end Mike was selling the company to king pokemon but he backed out. Which makes sense bc he dried up the game for the last 2-3 years. None of them cared. The sad part is that when MW gave the company to the individuals who actually cared that’s when the game died, bc if MW bannings, tantrums and overall greed. My condolences to the people who actually ran the the and the artists, they were blind sided. As far as the players, most of them were toxic and all in it for the tendies as they were called, and at a time all I cared about was that too. I left last year bc the game and the people were so toxic. Good times were had don’t get me wrong, but good riddance. Been a lot happier playing casual magic. Anyways like always great video
I didn't want metazoo to fail, but I'm surprised that they existed for as long as it did. My personal non-important opinion, the artwork was ugly. Really hated the artwork on those cards. Maybe that artwork isn't my style but it always surprised me that people collected it. Sorry Zoo fans. Hang on to those cards and keep them for the sake of nostalgia. they'll have worth and value to you regardless of what the market says.
I've been picking up cards from multiple different tcgs over the past year or so, metazoo is the only one I've not picked up cuz damn those cards are ugly xD (also Japanese cards are generally cheaper so that helps)
No offense but I always wondered why their art was so terrible and amateur, especially given how oddly successful they seemed to be doing stuff like that sanrio collab. It really looked like they hired their 14 year old cousin to draw everything- did they? Did anyone else notice this?
Metazoo had one of the worst card-artworks i ever seen. If you say that pokemon cards swarmed by investors, Metazoo was basically investors-only field because those cards had nothing else behind them.
Metazoo finally made it on this channel! Still glad to be part of the Metazoo community - story's not done yet for Metazoo. The hopium is still in stock!
The first time i saw anything of metazoo was Geoff the card market killer opening it with the Matt guy and someone else and they were getting excited for every shinny card. And this mad me think it was a gimmick game that was going to be over priced in a year or two. The only thing I ever bought was the Somky the Bear promo thing.
This video brings me back to when I first started watching you in around 2022 or so and listening to you cover the Loveland Frogman incident…didn’t even know this Tcg was still going on tbh
I mean Mike and Andy certainly did. Aoki and Bailey didn’t lose any money. So the scammers scammed and screwed over anyone else. I feel bad for the game client team. Just a rugpull on them too
Hey, that was a pretty decent salute, were you at one point in the military? I served 6 years in the USMC, and one critique is to make your thumb flat with your hand.
This is sad, but not surprising. Going to post my thoughts. I found out about MetaZoo after their successful kickstarter and was able to buy 1st edition Cryptid Nation when they came out. I continued to buy product through the first skateboard collab and soon felt like they were in over their heads, due to many of the reasons listed in this video and for constant launch issues. I sold as much product as I could but I'm still holding onto Wilderness and the Fan Art set from 2021 (can't get rid of it, I could be posting it in wrong groups). It sucks because the idea of a cryptid tcg has so much potential. I didn't want to sell but felt like management sucked and the boost all tcgs received from covid was coming to an end. It would be awesome to see someone buy it out and relaunch, but I won't hold my breath. I'll remember the joy of finding a new collectible and opening new product and will also remember the cautionary tale of new products over promising and under delivering.
This is what happens when things are artificially forced into being “the thing” through influencer pushing and advertising, things just need to have organic and genuine interest to be sustainable. Watch there be a Palworld tcg, it will explode *Fucking love that game, Daedream plush when?*
