A real short "Crew Cut" of some show and tell from our Knowledge Bolide Hangout on April 5th 2023. See a whole stone LL3 meteorite sliced up to better understand the spherical shape of chondrules in meteorites. Next we look at chondrules under a microscope.

So, the chondrules are the actual particles spit out by the super nova explosion? They are drawn together by surface adhesion while still liquid? I noticed that on the loose pile asteroids, all the pieces appear broken with sharp edges and little or no melting, so I assume those pieces are third or fourth generation evolution toward large mass objects, like planets. How large do you think first generation ejecta might be?

Chondrules are indeed fascinating components of meteorites, but they are not the actual particles spit out by a supernova explosion. Instead, chondrules are thought to have formed in the early solar system, possibly through processes like rapid heating and cooling within the protoplanetary disk. Regarding your observation about loose pile asteroids, you are correct! Many of these pieces may have experienced collisions and fragmentation over time, resulting in their broken appearance and sharp edges. Loose pile asteroids, also known as rubble pile asteroids, are thought to be composed of various debris that has accumulated due to past collisions. Over time, smaller fragments can merge through mutual gravitational attraction, gradually leading to the formation of larger bodies like planetesimals or protoplanets. Eventually, under certain conditions, some of these protoplanets may evolve into full-fledged planets. Keep in mind that ongoing scientific research may lead to further discoveries and refinements in our understanding of these processes. -Topher
