No, the jamming was portrayed more or less correctly. They were jamming Moscow so nobody in the Metro would hear any signals from further out, or be able to communicate with anyone from outside the city. That way the Metro would assume they were the only ones left and not accidentally leak out their presence to any potential enemies.

+Romulus I thought they had made it clear that it was so that no one knew that Moscow was still there so that follow up attacks didn't happen. A strong radio signal (like jamming) would paint a huge bullseye on anyone using it. But I read the book years ago, so I might be misremembering it.

A jamming signal is different from a broadcasting signal - in essence, a jamming signal is a signal that is used to "decrease the signal-to-noise ratio." You can do this in a variety of ways, but one of the most subtle way would be to use a strong enough signal to overpower any and all signals also being sent to the receiver, in which the receiver would only recognize the most powerful and be able to demodulate it. In essence, you're drowning out other signals through sheer power, but because the receiver can only receive, they won't notice that there are other incoming signals. To the receiver operator, everything is functioning as normal - there is no static, no interference, no nothing. Ultimately, there are many other ways to "jam" a signal, but I think that was the way they were doing it in the book.

Whether you are transmitting noise to blanket the air waves or putting out a strong carrier on a specific frequency, both show up like a light in the dark to any monitoring equipment. If your intention is to be invisible, shinning the radio equivalent of the bat signal over your location would do the exact opposite.

No, you're right. That was the purpose of the jamming, but you got the reasoning backwards. They were trying to keep anyone in the Metro from hearing any other signals so they would assume the rest of the world was dead and then not try and make contact or leave the Metro. The reasoning was that basically anyone not in the Metro was an American spy. If everyone in the Metro assumed the world was dead, then they'd have no reason to go anywhere, and so the world would just apparently assume Moscow was dead since nobody tried to call out. Artyom attacks this reasoning at one point. He asks Letyaga that if that was true, then why wouldn't the Americans just nuke Moscow again to be sure rather than assume Moscow was dead because it was quiet.

I like the fact that he uses some of his older raps lyrics in more than a few of his raps, like the lines in his Civilization rap which was used in a t least 2 of his raps that came after it... or it in all honesty could just be a way he uses a specific word that Im talking about that other rappers don't use, yet he can use it, and use it well.
