Metroid 2: Return of Samus -- Queen Battle and Best Ending

This is the battle with Samus has with Queen Metroid and the best ending in the game, Metroid 2: Return of Samus for the Gameboy. The game registers in at just under three hours, and though it doesn't say so, it is with 100% item recovery. Notice the baby Metroid hatchling imprinting Samus as it's mother. Samus brings that baby Metroid back with her, and it becomes the basis for what happens in Super Metroid and Metroid Fusion.
This game is actually in black and white, like all old Gameboy games, but since it is being played on the Gameboy Player, it is automatically colorized. This also happens on the Gameboy Advance.

My favorite part is how the music changes once you kill the last normal metroid. Simple, but urgent and very suspenseful, almost threatening in a way-- and the queen's screeching was icing on the cake. Its a testament to the greatness of the series-- how small touches like that can make even a GameBoy game feel so epic.

I remember playing this in '92. Being six years old, I shed a tear when the Metroid queen died. It was that final roar she did after she dissipated.

By far my favorite Metroid game, no other holds your hand less and has a feeling of such isolation and outright horror at times. I feel a Zero Mission style remake would Ruin it but I do want to see if they can capture those feelings again.

Ah, memories. I remember that whole boss fight. I also remember how hard that damn game was. Having beat every Metroid to date, I can easily say that it was the hardest, followed by the first time I played Metroid Fusion. RIP Gunpei Yokoi.

No, it was on a GC with a Gameboy Player, which was then attached to a DVD recorder, and then to a TV. The DVD recorder grabbed the video for me in a format I could then rip and commit to RU-vid.

Wow, my first game console ever was a Game Boy. This, Tetris, and Super Mario Land were the first three games I ever owned! That must have been Christmas 1991 or 1992. It's so cool to learn something new about it over 22 years later.

Viewing this video brought a sense of nostalgia, and made me go back to my childhood and the first time I beat this game sitting on the stairs of my old house. Love Metroid II it's a good game and it sucks that it doesn't get as much love as the other games, also it has a lovely soundtrack (especially SR388's Main Theme, the Queen's theme and the Hatchling and ending themes).

Well that's interesting... In Metroid 2, Samus doesn't point her gun at the hatchling. In Super Metroid's flashback, she does. In Other M's flashback, the gun is lowered again

Kraid wouldn't really have a place in a Metroid Prime game; his boss battle would involve a combination of both shooting AND platforming, something the 3D subseries tries to keep separate as much as possible.

I'd have loved to have seen Kraid in Other M. I mean I'm satisfied with Phantoon, it's a cool looking boss fight. But it (just like a great many other things in that game) is more fun to watch than it is to play. You can tell that not only story, but cinematics were at the forefront when that game was made. For god's sake the only boss that doesn't make you completely rely on sensemove, lethal strike, and/or overblast is Ridley. He's got the greatest variety of attacks, the orchestral score to his theme is fucking epic, and there's actually some challenge to be had in the fight. I feel like Kraid would have been given the same respect as he was the second most important of Mother Brain's minions. Fortunately what we got with Phantoon was an interesting looking boss fight that admittedly was kind of challenging. Unfortunately it's the very definition of sensemove to win and it's more fun to watch than it is to play.

Damn, this is a 15 year old video now. I played and beat this game a decade ago. it was fine. I remember that during the late 2000's, i would often watch ending videos like this, but i never bothered to do that with the Metroid series despite being aware of it.

As I've pointed out several times, it is the original game. There is no remade version of this game. The Gameboy Player automatically colorizes old black and white Gameboy games.

Every Metroid Prime game takes place in between Metroid and Metroid II. It's its own subseries dealing with the Metroid Prime specifically, which in the 1st game is a mutated Metroid, but in the second, comes back as Dark Samus. I don't know how he relates to the MP3 game yet, but that will be revealed to us shortly. ;) Check out wikipedia and search for the metroid entry. It will show you the timeline of every game in the series so far.

@Rossolon She gives it to scientists to study. It is then stolen by Ridley, which is the basis for Metroid 3: Super Metroid. It actually ends up sacrificing itself to save samus form mother brain, and then cells cloned from that of the metroid are used to cure samus of the x-parasite.

@XxDaloxX Because it is the best ending, achieved by finishing the game in under three hours. In most Metroid games, the best endings reveal more of Samus out of suit. The less desirable endings of this game show her in either her helmet or full suit.

Samus was impressed upon the baby metroid as its mother figure, and the creature's instincts made it follow her. This becomes a key plot point in Metroid 3 (Super Metroid) Metroid 4 (Metroid Fusion) and the prequel to Metroid Fusion, Metroid: Other M.

The newly hatched baby imprints Samus as its mother. It is a concept borrowed from the process that happens to some birds, for instance, when they hatch from their eggs. The first bird they see they imprint as their mother.

@jfachris Nope. There are three possible endings. The first one, which happens if you take five hours or longer to finish, is that Samus just continues to run. The second, which happens if your time is between three and five hours has Samus running in her suit, jumping into the air, and then landing. The third and best ending, pictured here, happens when you finish under three hours, which as you can see, has Samus showing up without her suit.

You are correct -- there is a screw attack. I got it but made little use of it. In any case the point I was trying to make is that it isn't the screw attack that allows you to "get around" in Metroid games, but the space jump. Admittedly, the screw attack helps you to use the space jump uninterrupted, which is very helpful for sure, but it is the space jump that allows someone to travel.

As said by AtlasShrugg3d, beating the game allows you to play as a suitless Samus (though it's more of a leotard than something like the Zero Suit). The JUSTIN BAILEY password made for a suitless Samus, too, except that the hair and suit colors are different (think Varia Fusion suit).

@trasmethrash Most of it is just "explore the new area the acid movement opened up", but yeah, there's two spots where a hint would have been nice; the false wall above the fire-spewing turret in the first Chozo "city" (on the way to the Spider Ball); and a bit more obvious because its a long hallway to it, a path to an Alpha and an e-tank in the 3rd city. I think they didn't/can't, because alot of paths actually *overlap*, so it'd take a Prime-style 3D map to display properly.

@lyrkey The original Metroid is the first and Zero Mission was a remake. Metroid Fusion is the last game in the time line of the series so far, taking place after the soon to be released Metroid: Other M (which takes place directly after Super Metroid). Fusion though was the 4th game of the series released so it is sometimes called 4

@shiranuidragon Well, Omega Metroids were first introduced in this game. So it makes sense that in the progression from larvae to Alpha Metroid to Gamma Metroid to Omega Metroid to Zeta Metroid to... Queen, there would be less progressively less similarities to the larvae and progressively more similarities to the final stage of Queen. Of course, that doesn't explain why Omega Metroid is so much larger in Fusion than it is in this game.

I beat the metroid queen in less time then he did using only missles, as well as no "turbo". Its alot easier too, since she freezes when you hit her with the first one, then you can just feed the rest to her. Takes me only about ~200 missles to kill her that way.

(part 1) Thx for posting the GBP version of this! I'm a huge Metroid fan/collector, and although I run through the games from time to time I find M2 the least playable. I guess it's due to the b/w graphics, minimalistic sound and confusing level design (even for a Metroid game). Also, Samus is very zoomed in meaning you have a very short range of vision. A better design decision would have been to make Samus smaller to be able to navigate easier and see more of the levels.

As said in comments and the video's description, it's a hatchling that imprints onto Samus as if the hunter were its parent. This comes into play in Super Metroid, and the creature itself is vital to Metroid Fusion.

@jfachris Well you are correct. It isn't really a speedrun game. As you can see, I took my time on it really when I played and I finished in under three hours. But that's basically because I know where to go and what to do, so I don't have to search that hard. I could imagine someone trying it out for the first time not quite getting three hours going at my same leisurely pace.

Adam Malkovich was never actually mentioned in any of the Metroid games other than Metroid Fusion. The Adam sidestory in that game gives me hope that another 2D Metroid game might fill in the gaps in the future.

I didn't even know you could morph ball into the mouth before I saw this and I've beaten her many times. She freezes if she's hit with a missile when her mouth is agape, and so you spam missiles, she keeps freezing as she gets closer and closer, then you move out of the way to avoid getting damaged.

The baby Metroid found in this game, and the fate of the Metroids in general, is directly related plotwise to Metroid Fusion. There are parts of that plot which are not expounded upon in Super Metroid except at the very beginning.

I think the Fusion Samus sprites came from the Varia Suit looks. Have a look at the stationary look-at you moment (on the Save Post) and you can see the Varia Suit looks like a red Fusion Suit.

Aw, I just love this game. The music is so creepy in this last part - the first one with that sense of impending doom, and then the one that starts at around 0:48. Then the really scary one at 3:37 just makes you think 'the Queen has awoken!' and it's terrifying. D: Just a brilliant game. :')

I played this game back when II was about 10.I would of NEVER thought you could roll into a ball and blow her up from the inside... well, the reason she took her suit off is because he completed the game with 100% items collected and a certain time period. there are different endings from how long u take and how much items u collected.

Prime had two, escaping the space vessel in the beginning, and killing Metroid Prime causes a crater collapse Samus had to escape from (you just don't get to play it). Prime 3, planet Phaaze exploded, just you don't get to play the escape sequence (again).

No... the Metroid game before this one had a timed evacuation. So I am not sure how they evolved. This was just a situation where the designers felt that a timed evacuation wouldn't make sense. And I agree with them on that.

@MrLuigi13131313 It is a side-effect of the game being colorized. I'd wager that there is a change in the game that isn't registered in black and white, but is in color. I've noticed a few other videos of the ending that colorize the back and white differently and the oscillating bar is still there, though in a different color than red (due to an alternate colorization).

No it gets recovered by Samus, taken back to her home colony, where after some research, was retaken by the Space Pirates.

that's right. besides, various metroid instruction manuals also indicate that samus does indeed have chozo blood infused in her. along with the metroid blood, i can't help wondering how she can stay human like in appearance...
