This documentary explores the urban revolution of ancient Egypt, tracing the development of its cities and capitals over 3,000 years. The journey begins with Hierakonpolis, one of Egypt's oldest urban settlements and a key player in the unification of Upper and Lower Egypt. As the ancient Egyptian civilization evolves, the documentary showcases how cities like Memphis emerged as important capitals, blending political power with religious significance.
The film delves into the architectural marvels of ancient Egypt, from the mud-brick houses of common people to the grand stone temples that have endured millennia. It highlights the importance of Egyptian temples in urban planning, with special focus on complexes like Karnak and the obelisks of Heliopolis. The changing capitals of ancient Egypt, including Thebes during the New Kingdom, are examined to show how they reflected the shifting political and religious landscape.
Viewers will discover the urban planning techniques used in ancient Egyptian cities, including grid systems and sophisticated water management. The documentary also explores the brief but significant reign of Akhenaten and his new capital Akhetaten, providing insight into how political and religious ideologies shaped urban development.
The documentary concludes with the rise of Alexandria under the Ptolemaic dynasty, showcasing how Egyptian urban traditions merged with Hellenistic influences to create one of the ancient world's greatest cities. Throughout, the film emphasizes how these ancient Egyptian cities and temples laid the groundwork for urban planning concepts that continue to influence architecture and city design to this day.

I feel sooo fortunate to see this one just after it's posting. What an excellent job! I could have spent the whole hour on New Kingdom Thebes. Like that they gave other cities their due, though -- particularly Edfu. Thanks for posting.

At 42:30 - How I like the description of Alexander the Great as rightful ruler of Egypt, He was immortalized on monumental reliefs as blessed by the Gods. The iconographic choice that accompany those sentences felt on a relief of a XIX Dynasty Pharaoh ( maybe Sety I ,or II) facing Min in his full glory, when displaying his mighty attribute. It was a very appropriate choice, in my opinion, to comment your narrative. This is why I congratulate you for the whole video, as well for these finesses. Well done guys!

@edp,the reason why is because the people of Egypt used not only mud bricks, but also used blocks of granite to build the pyramids for the Farones

Very interesting topic and an excellent presentation. But, as the Nile flooded every year wouldn't the suburbs where ordinary Egyptians lived also be flooded? Or were Egyptian cities entirely walled? And is there any indication of flood control structures such as dams and levies? I'd think that unless we understand how ancient Egyptian cities interacted within a dynamic riverine landscape, we're only getting half the story of this remarkable civilization.

Of course not. They were white with blond hair and blue eyes. They lived in a trailer Park in the parking lot of Giza. Maybe you could google "Black Pharaohs of Egypt"

@@tonyducks1121 That’s right, Although family trees of the pharaohs were the result of hundreds of years of incest, sisters making children together, so it wouldn't be surprised if they had six fingers and three eyes. The claim that the pharaohs or the pyramid builders were never black is simply not true. However, we are talking about North Africa, so it is obvious that there were also dark-skinned people among them, although I don't know what does it matter at all

I guess you didn't watch the rest. The pyramids were built with stone because they were special and they are meant to last almost forever.

The pyramid's were build by very advanced technology not know to as, because this Egyptian civilization were extinct and it might be more advance than as today. It might pass few hundreds years for us to be at there level (our civilization is younger than there) . When I civilization meets there end/doom everting is lost and nothing transfer and it starts almost from ground zero. When we meet our doom (for example world war III) the few survival individual can not carry all the knowledge so they have to reinvent (they will not believe in computers and satellites till they reinvent them) This is systematic event. Now we are scratching our heads because we are not continuations we were disconnected and we started far behind what was.

Pyramids of Nigeria and Niger; not to mention cultural continuity seen within the Yoruba, Ethiopian, Somali, Sudanese, and Dogon peoples?? Where are the pyramids of Europe? Saudi Arabia? Our excuse is BOTH the TransAtlantic and Trans Saharan slave trades. Also the Conference of Berlin in 1835 where Europe gain control of 95% of Africa and its resources. This is how England went from a rat and disease infested shyt hole, to a major city.

The pyramids are far older than these cities. These cities were built and used by the peoples that disassembled the pyramids to build Cairo. Sorry to disappoint you .
