Mex 5 Hwy was more tore up than we expected.
Watching this footage gives me a new love for this drive.
The scenery was absolutely beautiful and the unexpected stay in the desert is quite adventurous for me.
I made the video of this drive detailed so people know what to expect of Mex 5 Hwy if they take this route. I feel like if we would have known the truth we wouldn't have been so bothered by the length and roughness. Who knows though maybe we would still have been bothered by the end of it.
We definitely were getting silly towards the end of it all and saying "We are adventurers" kept the mood fun and light.
Bahia De Los Angeles is so beautiful and I am excited to show you guys our adventures here!

Great video, now I have a better idea how is the road, more detours more rough roads, I have a question: Why you did not recorder nothing about Bahia L Gonzaga? Thank you for the video.

Roughly how many miles of dirt vs asphalt south of San Felipe until the next real asphalt road. We are thinking of driving our RV from San Felipe to Bahia De Los Angeles if there is not too much dirt.

The road could possibly be in better shape with repairs over the year however even if it’s not just take your time and take mex 5 the scenery is soooo beautiful!!!

What an incredible video! That's a scary amount of bridges out. There were more than a few places I saw that we would not have been able to navigate with an RV and cargo trailer.

LeAnna Bing I was so surprised how bad that road really was. I wanted to make this video so people knew before they went. I loved the views from this drive. You won’t see it on hwy 1. Still undecided if the drive is worth it for the views again lol

Drove it back in December. The drive is definitely good for the bowels. Broke up the trip to Bay of LA into two days. Decided not to go back that way, used MEX-1 instead. Once you hit MEX-1 consider pulling in the drivers side mirror, mirror slap with oncoming trucks is common. Bay of LA is as far south as I've been, I'm still working. Be careful drinking any beverage from a straw when under way in a Fuso. You might consider wearing eye protection so you don't poke yourself in the eye with the straw. You did stay at Daggetts, say hi to Rubin for me. Travel safe!

You notice the mirror slap--that's one more reason to not drive with a wide vehicle. on Hwy 1.

Elaine Azlin MEX-5 is supposedly in better shape now since I drove it. It’s been reported to now be paved. If I were to leave today, I’d take MEX-5 out of San Felipe until it hits MEX-1. I found MEX-1 nerve racking as it’s very narrow. Hope that helps.

I love the footage, what camera did you guys use to film? Also i saw that you camped out in the middle of nowhere, I've heard of stories of road bandits and people discouraging travellers to drive at night, was there anytime where you felt unsafe?
@barefootexpedition9070
@barefootexpedition9070 3 года назад
I was using my iPhone to film this video. I’m so impressed with what our phones can do now😳 We did camp in the middle of nowhere haha and me personally I was scared but only because of the stories I’ve heard too. My boyfriend wasn’t nervous at all and we had absolutely no issues the whole time we were in Baja. The people were so kind and helpful. Driving at night is a hazard mostly because of the animals move to the road at night and it’s so dark you can’t see them and well you know what happens if you hit a cow😳

We once took a "gray road" in New Mexico, which we weren't aware meant "call ahead for road conditions. It took us 3 hours to drive 17 miles and the light bulbs literally shook out of the fixtures. And I'd still rather do that than drive Mex 5, I think.

@@barefootexpedition9070 If you look in the front of the Road Atlas where the map legends are, you'll see a gray road. It reads "Local Inquiry Suggested". If only I'd known that sooner.

Hello. My family, some friends and I are set to go to Bahia from San Felipe in a couple of weeks as well. Any suggestions or recommendations like airing down tires, etc., is appreciated. Thank you.
@barefootexpedition9070
@barefootexpedition9070 5 лет назад
Mario Renteria I would suggest a couple of things. 1) Know that you won’t have cell service so you need a good map so you know where you are. 2) It takes two days to drive this route so make sure you know where you are staying unless you want to stay in the desert like we did. 3) Look at the views. The beauty will help with the constant jarring and make it all worth it. The views are so amazing! Also you can stay on any beach in Baja for free so if you find a good beach you can stay there for the night. As long as you are off the road by dark you are safe. I’m so excited y’all are taking this route. Please let us know how it all goes and where you end up.
@ivpmr

Barefoot Expedition Thank you for those suggestions. We plan to break it up by staying in San Felipe one night and then driving the rest of the way early in the morning. We plan to stay at Campo Archelon, we heard it's a good camp there and cheap. Some of the group need the showers and clean restrooms haha We are very excited about this trip as well, thank you for everything.

@@barefootexpedition9070 IMO, I'd keep the duals. On my Fuso if i hold the speed to 50mph, I can push the 33 gallon tank 600 miles. Someday i plan to take the truck to a suspension shop to have the chassis suspension reworked. It certainly rides like a freight truck. I can certainly relate to the excitement regarding having the ability to go anywhere and everywhere. But once you start crossing borders and jumping continents vehicle preservation should be forefront on your mind.

Use caution when setting up camp in a wash. Have witnessed major water flows in washes. Was lucky to drive the "Old Road" from San Felipe to Gonzaga Bay. In the days of no bridges. We were traveling in dune buggies designed for Mexico and the desert. Those were the good old days. Travel Safe! In memory of Paul Secor may he rest in peace!
