Imma be straight with it. I don’t like Maria. I don’t like her attitude, the way she kept pushing everyone’s food away, and the way she was being unfair. I believe the other people’s tamales were good she just wanted to win.

I always think about how different our tamales are. I'm norteña and I've been eating thin, thick and greasy tamales my whole life! We don't put carrots in them! But, when I visited my friends in Mazatlán, their tamales were way too different, even in Toluca and CDMX where they are so big and fluffy. There's so much diversity about just one dish and I think their judgement were based just in their personal experiences, especially Maria and her rajas con chile, I mean, I told my mom and she was like "Who puts carrots if it's a rajas con chile tamale???", But yeah, you get my point

My grandmother was 15 years old, when she started making tamales and selling it in the food market in Puebla, Mexico. She was forced to marry at the age of 15, but her husband (grandfather) was lazy and refused to work. Over the years, she traveled from place to place selling her tamales to support raising her children. She is in now 85 years old, and with pride I can say she makes the most delicious tamales the world will ever know. SHE HAS OVER 70 YEARS OF MAKING TAMALES!!! She can’t walk properly anymore but she still helps to make tamales from the comfort of her home, to help her daughter sell in the Mercado (food market). I am proud of her service. These Grandmothers don’t know what a real tamale taste like! So that’s why I was like - Carrots? That’s a disgrace. A true tamale will not have carrots lol. Anyways, and that is why I will always hold tamales in my heart because it reminds me of my Grandmother who I can’t visit often but I love. ❤️

Ok, I’m Chicana and my grandma (RIP) was from Sonora. She would make red tamales de puerco & res. It was simply sauce and meat. My grandma befriended a Cuban lady who was married to a Mexican, and she made and sold tamales. It was the weirdest thing- she’d put a sliver of potato, carrot, jalapeño, and a little green Spanish olive. We’ve never had anything like it, but it was amazing! And now I can’t stand plain tamales with just meat and sauce. Don’t knock it till you try it.
