Mexican Vigilantes Stand Up Against Crime

The state of Guerrero (which means "warrior") is one of the poorest in Mexico and the site of some of the worst violence in the battle between the drug cartels and Mexican authorities. As a result of the violence, hundreds of civillians have armed themselves with machetes, rifles, and shotguns, put masks on, and decided to police their own communities as vigilantes, effectively taking justice into their own hands.

My country is the way it is because there is no Serve and Protect . Police want my people to get kidnapped, extorted, robbed, killed. Pueblanos are the ones that suffer because if they stand up for they community by picking up arms, they get labeled criminals and the authorities take there only means of self defence away. Its sad because police/feds work with the cartels side by side

Why are these guys considered vigilantes? These guys are true patriots.
@zhengyangwang214
@zhengyangwang214 5 лет назад
vigilante /ˌvɪdʒɪˈlanti/Submit noun plural noun: vigilantes a member of a self-appointed group of citizens who undertake law enforcement in their community without legal authority, typically because the legal agencies are thought to be inadequate. Vigilantism doesn't necessarily mean these people are bad, its just that they take law into their own hands, exercising judicial powers with no accountability. In communities that are safe and stable with functioning institutions, its considered bad because you can kill someone without proving his guilt and call it justice, that's why its usually a mainstream bad term for people. However in cases like this, where there are little to no policing to control the drug cartels, people who take up arms to defend themselves from these gangsters are still technically vigilantes but like the definition states, they were forced to due to the rampant violence brought by the cartels into their communities.

It's really sad that so many people in Mexico are having to deal with police that are just as bad as the narcos if not worse in some situations. The issue comes from the top-down. People need to start protesting and put pressure on the government to keep the local police in check (not just sending the army since the local police are owned by the narcos). Mexico will always feel on edge until the corruption and collusion with the narcos is wiped out. Maybe if there was a policy in place that made it mandatory for all police to wear bodycams? I'm just an outsider since I'm not from Mexico so my opinion doesn't really matter. But I feel the widespread police corruption is the main issue keeping Mexico from progressing and becoming the country it could be. If travelers could trust the police, tourism would boom. Even though I live in Texas and only 8 hours from Mexico, I only take flights when I visit. I'd prefer to drive, but driving through a border town with U.S. / Canadian plates - the police will single you out. The country is beautiful and hopefully becomes more tourist friendly in the future. It's sad because my father grew up in Laredo (Texas side of Mexico border) and Nuevo Laredo was so safe he'd cross into Mexico for lunch. Not worth the risk now.

@Fruitsmistress
@Fruitsmistress 9 лет назад
Fonzi Caston Yeah, I dunno why that is... I grew up in a eastern european country that used to be part of the soviet union. Because until twenty years ago all immigration was controlled by SU and after that the recovering country was too poor and too cold to attract many newcomers, there is virtually no other races living here. I would guess 99% of the population is white, I think the first time I saw an asian person was in my early teens and a black person in my late teens.As such, racism is never discussed in families, in schools - there is just no need for it. Therefore, everyone I know developed their own ideas about the problem without ever actually dicussing it, seeing it or experiencing it. And as we got old enough to travel around, as the country developed to the point where at least exchange students, if not permanent residents, of all races could be seen, as we got old enough to discuss social problems that were present in other parts of the world, I was very surprised how different the views of people raised in the same enviorment, even raised in the same families, could be. I know this guy who hates practically everyone. He hates religion of all forms, he hates gays, he... well, likes women, but thinks they are less than men, and he hates all other races, especially black people. At least he knows about religion, maybe even has met a gay or two, but he has never met a black guy. I asked him has he ever spoken to one, he was like: "Nah, I don't need to speak to them to know they are..." (It was a long speech. A long time ago too, haven't seen him in seven years now, so don't remember exactly, but you can imagine). And he isn't even really dumb, he's educated and works as a teacher. Teacher!?! My point is, it doesn't really depend on a persons experience. The strongest type of hate is the groundless one, passed on by someone, taken in as fact before you learned to doubt what you know. The best thing anyone can do is try their best to not pass on the hate that they don't even know where it came from. And well, assholes will always exist, the kind who think less of everyone else to think more of themselves. But if we outnumber them one day, they will be forced to shut up. So keep up the hope, mate.

This wouldn't work in the US. These people grew up with a more socialist government, more socialist communities (see Zapatistas, Mexican support for the government during the cultural revolution). The culture of majority of America wouldn't support that, and problems have never been as widespread and as great in magnitude as the issues that plague regions where these police groups have propagated. Our police and state/federal level security networks are powerful enough to keep the vast majority of people alive and well, so there isn't nearly the motivation among the people for community police - it just isn't necessary. Although I agree with you, there's plenty to learn from the documentaray, I disagree with your (inferring here, maybe you did mean it literally) point that Americans should take up arms to protect their communities. We have professional police forces fully capable of doing so, most of the time.
