And for that historic moment to end up being between *not only* between two teams from the *same* Confederation, but for the two teams that share a border and be arguably each others' biggest rivals in international football is *stunning!* Yes, this was truly a once-in-a-lifetime event where all the stars aligned and the world got to witness something *very* special (obviously, no two teams from the same confederation outside of Europe or South America have *ever* faced each other since, and the *only* other knockout round game between two teams both *not* from Europe or South America in *all* of history happened in 2010 when the United States played Ghana in the Round of 16. This was a truly unique event in which nothing similar to it had ever happened before and nothing similar to it has repeated in the 16 years of tournament play since)!

For a USA fan, this is probably our favorite "Dos A Cero!" win.

I remember Mexico was so confident about having this game in the bag. Even Germany were already talking about facing Mexico in the quarterfinals. But the USMT team kept quite and focused and got the job done. Heartbreaking defeat for Mexico.

I love how fair the ref was in the game. If this was CONCACAF, Márquez for sure would never get that red card after the headbutt to Cobi Jones. Ref went straight to the red! 👏🏼 Other refs would have not given a card and say it's fine.

A mi consideración el partido más importante entre estas dos selecciones, se jugaban el todo por el todo. Pero creo que la selección mexicana salió al campo con un exceso de confianza y jamás pensó estar abajo en el marcador desde el minuto 8. Y no se pudieron reponer anímicamente. Estados Unidos ganó merecidamente.

Esta derrota fue culpa en 90% de Javier Aguirre. No haber podido hacer un buen planteamiento contra un rival al que te enfrentas hasta como 5 veces en todo ciclo mundialista, no tiene perdón de Dios. Especialmente si vienes de dar un partidazo contra Italia. Fue una muestra de que es un técnico mediano, no apto para los grandes partidos. Y por supuesto, hubo jugadores que a la hora no dieron el ancho, como el famoso "Rafita" Márquez, quien lejos de ayudar y de ser una fuente de fortaleza para el equipo, se hizo expulsar.

México siempre va a ser un equipo pedorro. Ya desperdiciaron dos generaciones sub17... Así las cosas.

Es cierto que los ecuatorianos hicieron un buen papel en las eliminatorias de Sudamérica, pero en realidad el futbol de Ecuador no estaba todavía preparado para pasar más allá de la primera ronda. Y México ganó 2-1, aunque pudieron haber sido más goles mexicanos. En el partido contra Italia, México jugó espléndido. Se vio mal el estilo de futbol italiano, el famoso catenaccio, ese estilo en donde sólo se defiende excelente, para definir el partido con un solo gol, en un ataque vertiginoso, en donde un ágil delantero tiene que ser fulminante. México pudo haber ganado, pero todo quedó arreglado en un empate a un gol, con sabor a victoria mexicana. ¿Qué hizo Javier Aguirre? ¿Cuánto contribuyó él en la derrota mexicana? Veamos. México inició con una formación 3-5-2, como en los demás partidos. Todo parecía normal en el inicio del primer tiempo. México empezaba algo confiado. Destacaba por su rapidez y picardía en las jugadas Ramón Morales. Ramón Morales estaba bien ahí, no había que sustituirlo por un delantero. Ése fue el primer error de Javier Aguirre. Pero entró de cambio el veterano Luis Hernández por el talentoso Ramón Morales. ¿Qué aportó Luis Hernández? No mucho. Luis Hernández nunca debió haber entrado de cambio. Y si hubiera entrado un delantero por un mediocampista, según Aguirre, ése debió haber sido Francisco Palencia. Con la llegada de Luis Hernández al terreno de juego, el esquema de México cambia a un 3-4-3. Ahora ya no había mucha movilidad por las bandas, por la zona donde jugaba Ramón Morales. Y Luis Hernández no aportaba nada en la delantera; lo máximo que lograba era fingir faltas y echarse clavados. El primer gol de Estados Unidos cayó de sorpresa. Todos los mexicanos nos quedamos perplejos y congelados, pues nadie se esperaba que Estados Unidos fuera ganando. México se empezó a confiar más y más hasta que finalizó el primer tiempo. En el segundo tiempo México jugaba muy impreciso, estaba desdibujado. Otra vez interviene el factor Aguirre. El “Vasco” decide hacer cambios de defensas Manuel Vidrio por Sigifredo Mercado, pudiendo haber utilizado ese cambio para hacer un movimiento mejor. Era obvio que el esquema 3-4-3 estaba siendo un rotundo fracaso. En el momento en que cayó el segundo gol de Estados Unidos los mexicanos se resignaron a perder. Ya no intentaron nada, estaban tiesos, desanimados. Faltando todavía unos 15 minutos, los mexicanos ya habían perdido el partido. Y luego llegaría Aguirre con otro cambio ilógico. Todavía quedaba suficiente tiempo como para anotar por lo menos un gol, intentar hacer algo. Francisco Palencia pudiera haber sido el salvador del equipo, esperando una oportunidad para que entrara. Pero no, Aguirre decide meter a García Aspe para que jugara su último partido. ¡Por favor, el partido no estaba para la despedida de un jugador! El partido estaba para que entrara un hombre de ataque, capaz de darle un giro a la situación, como Cuauhtémoc Blanco lo fue en la eliminatoria. ¿Qué le sucedió a Javier Aguirre? ¿Por qué hizo ese tipo de cambios Probablemente fue el exceso de confianza, ese exceso de confianza que mostró Óscar Pérez cuando regaló un tiro de esquina, ese exceso de confianza que mostró Luis Hernández cuando atacaba en el área, ese exceso de confianza que provocó la expulsión de Rafael Márquez, ese exceso de confianza que tuvimos la mayoría de los mexicanos al pensar que México vencería fácilmente a Estados Unidos.

para mí este es el partido que mató a México en toda la historia del fútbol mundial. Saber que gringolandia te saca de un mundial en fútbol, y encima con esos referentes juntos en el campo, el matador, marquez, borgetti, cuautehmoc, uff..
