Can you do a video about the public school system? We're gringos, but I have a 5 year old daughter who I'd like to learn Spanish fluently so I'm thinking a public school would fit the bill instead of a private school that usually only speaks English. Thanks!
Jose, the quality and content of the show were great. You're being too hard on yourself. People are glad there is new content. Thank you for the video!
Thank you for posting. I never thought I would go to Mexico due to the media but after finding videos on RU-vid and seeing it is as safe as the US. I have decided to get my dental and a medical specialist in Mexico due to cost and our horrible medical in the US. Please keep posting I’m new to RU-vid well only been on 6 months or so.
I had no idea Merida is this beautiful and a walkable city! You bring important points. People all over the world are getting squeezed out of home ownership and basic livable wage. Looking forward to my Merida visit soon.
It's weird! I live in Colosio and a new restaurant opened up..."avocado toast" on the menu for 160 pesos. My friend and I went further into our area to find real food at reasonable prices. I hate this!!!
@@sapphirestarlight7341 Me and Christian still share meals for around 200 pesos total.... I can get a whole pizza for the price of that Avocado Toast! LOL In the end I dont worry too much about restaurant prices as a former restauranteur I know most places can not survive with those sky high prices. Thats why the local taco stand has been there decades and counting! Thanks for sharing!
When i came to Quintana Roo it was pretty affordable but not anymore. I only come here because i can live better for less. Prices are getting stupid here so i can stay home in Florida for about the same and drink the water
Funny you mentioned "Gringo Price" I was born in Merida but, grew up in The Bronx. The times I went to Merida they picked me out as a Gringo instantly. They all said, "no eres de aqui".
Yeah no matter how well i speak Spanish they say the same to me..... I literally have to bring my yucatecan wife sometimes to vouch for me as a local lol 😅
Hola Jose, I absolutely hear you. I live 45 minutes from San Francisco. When peop.e started commuting from the city everything went through the roof. As is the case , it's about the have and the ha e not. By the way, my long time friends are from La Habana and his better half is from Pinar Del Rio. He refuses to give up his strong Cuban accent. When he went to Miami m a NY years ago his old Cuban friends told him that he spoke like a mexican. It rubbed off on him....😉
You're right. It's the same for us at home. I live in Miami and there are some hotels, restaurants, stores, tourist attractions that I can not afford. That's why when traveling, we tend to travel to places that are less expensive than the place we live. In that way we can afford luxuries that we can't have back at home.
If you're just a straight up tourist going to just tourist places it's definitely expensive. They charged me like $80 in Progreso for a plate of nachos and like 4 drinks on the beach. 🤣 But I had a full dinner for "3" at La Chaya Maya with drinks for only like $60. And that's a nice restaurant. We ate at some other nice restaurant for lunch and shared a giant plate (made to share) between 3 people for around $15. And couldn't even finish it. 👍 So really it just seems like it's just about knowing where to go.
Tocayo, the walk & talk videos are great man. You are getting your cardio on😃 while giving us all the info.. I think also It would be a great idea if you take us on a "bike & ride" talk.. Give us a Taco Tuesday tour at the end of the video. Share some of those favorite places of yours
Gentrification is becoming a problem in Miami. In terms of rent, housing is becoming increasingly unaffordable. Some people can't afford to pay their rent.
It's been happening there for years. That's why i left 10 years ago, I couldn't afford it anymore and was tired of working 80 hours to just afford the bare minimum. I can't even imagine how bad it is now.
México is not cheap at all...on my point of view people are delusional at times. A bag of chips cost 15 pesos in non touristic area and from 35 to 62 pesos in touristic areas. That's same bag of Doritos is 1$ . In Dallas GA in beautiful and relatively safe area one can get a beautiful house with yard around 300 thousands US. In México good luck finding that in a nice area. So please define cheap whomever thinks MX is cheap?
Mexico is still cheap but most people dont want to live or travel to those areas. We have friends in close by villages who still pay under 5 pesos for tacos and sweets and a coke is only 10 pesos. But as you get closer and deeper into the cities and touristy areas the prices increase exponentially. But you do make a great point the housing market bubble in Merida for one is about to pop soon because as you said they are already pricing homes out here for more expensive than 5 times the house in Houston for the same price, or less. But to sum it all up you can still find homes out here for under 50k same as you can still find 5 pesos tacos out there. Thanks for sharing!
As a Chicano, recently when I went to Cancun and CDMX I will admit I didn't tip as I should have. I had just finished traveling across Asia and tipping doesn't exist over there so I was a little stingy 😅 Next time I go I will definitely be more generous!
This is a great video, I want to come to Mexico this winter, we need more information about residency and how long we can stay and I'm very interested in investing in the peso right now because the dollar is high right now. The only way I know to do that would be to open a Mexican bank account , then transfer dollars to it. I looks a little overwhelming on know where to start , especially with all the new videos say you can no longer stay 180 days and all that. Lots of questions. But thanks for the video and all the information, it helps a lot.
Thank you and welcome aboard! Check out m other videos and website for answers to all your questions and more! P.S there is NO Crackdown on 180 day visas, in fact they are literally doing away with them and just giving everyone automatic electronic 180 visas with each entry with just a stamp on your passport. Mexico is becoming more open and free each passing day. Thanks for watching!
We eat at our favorite local place for tortas. Price has not been raised as of today. 120 pesos for 2 leschon tortas with Chia con Limon drinks. Includes tip. Saludos
Honest video. This is correct, just the simple fact of telling everyone that merida is cheap will get things worse and all businesses and landlords will start increasing prices, at the end Mexicans won´t be able to pay for it. American, Canadian and European migration to Mexico and south american countries is a threat to local people.
@@JoseArteagaTravels Yeah, i´ll be visiting Merida as a tourist in november, we have some friends that are transforming their house into a Hotel Boutique (Expensive) , have a local artisan business near Paseo Montejo and one them work at Museo Regional de Antropología de Yucatán. Merida was not in my plans, however i have gained interest in visiting this city and Campeche aswell.
It's too late because it started happening hardcore last year. Mexico never closed during the "pandemic" and was wide open for tourism with no tests or jabs required so foreign visitors actually helped keep the economy stable. Foreigners who come here but don't congregate and concentrate themselves all in one area do no harm. It's the lanlords that act like snakes and increase the prices just because they know gringos will pay so they are also apart of the blame. I moved to Guadalajara from Merida 5 months ago and while there are many expats here you don't see them as much as in Merida and they don't drive prices higher here. It still feels like a very Mexican city and most of the rich people who live here are rich Mexicans. The main problem so many foreigners who moved to Merida kept telling everybody and their mother to go there and word spread like wildfire.
Your are so right Bro, i live closed EdoMex, and im from Spain, things change to fast in 4 months, prices, everything, and i can feel local people who start to be angry with all the sittuation. By the way, i always feel this country always bring love when u come from outside.
I love doing that walk myself, especially in the evenings to cool off as there’s often a nice breeze on the Paseo... you walked past the cucinas economicas in parque Santa Ana where I get the best sopa de lima
Ya gotta be careful..I have found if you tip too much they start looking at you... example I went out solo and tipped the driver well and a couple hours later he showed back up with two shady friends...lucky for me the people I was with gave me a heads up...now I'm kinda Gunn shy ...I don't know who to trust ..
Yeah I only tip when necessary, and I don't over tip anymore. Mexico has a weird relationship with tipping. I used to tip my cleaning lady.... until I had to replace her because she would get constantly offended I wasn't always giving her more and yet she would complain about her Other Mexican boss and how he treated her so horribly and for only a few pesos.... You would think they would take care of the cushy job more than the abusive one, but she didn't. I honestly only tip the old people working in parking lots or putting away your groceries. I tip the water and garbage guys, I tip waiters always and delivery drivers. I tip personal drivers ONLY when they go above and beyond. As for my workers i don't tip anymore, i just offer them endless work and if they do an amazing job i give them some extra.... Long story short showing restraint has actually helped me more than tipping everyone I see.... we are not mafia bosses out here giving out 100s lets not forget that either lol
So true bud..yup...live and learn...hunger makes folks do dumb things...damn I just don't know anymore...I would hate to get introuble for defending myself but I damn sure ain't gunna let anyone hurt me ...
Hi Jose' good video, honest and true. Since you know me, I am old enough to be more jittery than your video.... Nice job, keep it up buddy, need to get together soon...best to your BOSS!..Greg and Kaytee.
It’s not just Mexico, I hear a lot of complains from other states that Californias are making their state more expensive. The pandemic changed everything
Had to add Jose, you as as a Floridian, know the impact gentrification has had on Florida, so many people moving from California, Utah, and Canada there have driven up real estate and rentals to where most average people can't afford it, money talks and it makes paradise a place only for the wealthy.
People still think places like Latin America and Asia are 3rd world nations, then you see how developed, prosperous, safe and beautiful the world is. Sadly states like Michigan, NYC, Chicago, Maryland, California. Louisiana...etc look like war zones, with ghetto's, abandoned houses and decrepit neighbourhoods.
I went to PDC this summer. Honestly I have no desire to ever go back. With the exorbitant prices and bland af food, I'd rather vacation somewhere in the US versus there. I'm going to stick with places other than Quintana Roo and Yucatán. Mexico is a big and beautiful country.
Mexico is gentrified. Prices have gone way up causing locals to move out because they can no longer afford their town were they grew up causing some resentment
Again there are many things at play here inflation, demand, capitalism and lets not forget most expats are coming from all over the world too. Theres not much anyone can do about gentrification.
Always a beautiful video. gentrification is worldwide, people with money come in and drive up cost to everyone so that the people who have lived in an area for generations are priced out, these same folks that move to Mexico should understand they are not alone and they will make an impact on where they move if they live the same way as the place they left.
But why does that have to happen or does it HAVE to happen?? A price should be a price regardless of who is paying it. A prices doesnt neccessarily HAVE TO rise, because people with money move to an area
Really enjoy your videos espicially when you are at the beach. So our retirement of about 4000 a month would provide a nice retiement there it take it.
Can you do a video about the public school system? We're gringos, but I have a 5 year old daughter who I'd like to learn Spanish fluently so I'm thinking a public school would fit the bill instead of a private school that usually only speaks English. Thanks!
Sounds good I'll put it on my list. In the meantime you should check out the local expat groups and see what kind of education options are available for you out here
Yup but the situation was my own fault...I've gotten too comfortable with my surroundings and was running with the mentalaty that I was helping folk by giving a little more but it almost bit me in the but...my advice is don't go out solo...
You can go out solo just be careful and use common sense. Also remember Merida is now filling up with people from all over Mexico and the Americas and not everyone is going to be as nice and accommodating and some just want to take advantage of the generous gringo. I very rarely get asked or bothered for money because i make sure to let them know I'm just as poor as them and I actually come from a very dangerous place. LOL
Not much if you are in the bigger cities and touristy areas, but the farther you go away from the city centers the more you'll need to know Spanish. The more you know the better the experience. Things will go smoother and you will be able to understand more of what is going on around you.
In DF rn..in the metro yesterday a woman paid for my ticket cos I looked like a lost gringo.. Mexicans will give you the shirt of their backs to help you… greatest people on the planet…. dopo gli italiani 😉
It's also really offensive to Mexicans for recent foreign immigrants--especially those who self-identify as digital nomad expats--to keep saying 'everything is cheap.' It's not cheap for them. I'ts insensitive to the typical Mexican. And it shows how you didn't come to Mexico to do any kind of cultural immersion. You just came to exploit pricing.
