The 30th of may we had the privilege to greet this magnificent steam locomotive on mexican soil, entering through the border at Nuevo Laredo, while taking part in CPKC's Final Spike Steam Tour, celebrating the first anniversary of Canadian Pacific and Kansas City Southern's merger in april of 2023. On this first part of the trip, we'll chase 2816 through the northern region of the state of Nuevo León between Laredo and the capital city of Monterrey, starting at Estación Candela, built like a small castle in 1911.
Canadian Pacific 2816 has been recently restored for this historic transcontinental trip from Calgary, in Alberta Canada, all the way to Mexico City. It was originally built at Montreal Locomotive Works on december 1930, built for high-speed passenger service as a class H1b "Hudson" with a 4-6-4 wheel arrangement with large diameter driving wheels for high cruising speeds. Named as "The Empress" as a callback to the time Canadian Pacific operated ocean liners, each titled as "empress of...".
