I remember back two years ago when Zeos first reviewed the Meze Empyreans he claimed that they were the best sounding headphones he had ever heard. So many people called him a shill, and many more reviewers came out and critiqued the problems with the headphones and basically called him delusional for liking them so much. There is something interesting about the audiophile industry where you seem to gain more respect for calling a product bad and are somehow a better reviewer for disliking more things (and god forbid you actually love something that others dislike, then you're clearly deaf). It is quite interesting to see that he was not alone in holding the Empyreans in such high regard.

Loved your review! I too have bought this headphone and it is one of my best headphones for me as well. I am a professional pianist and these headphones simply gives the best rendition of live instruments. I keep seeing talk about resolution, neutrality, transperence, but often I found them not engaging enough and quite frankly, not as true renditions of live instruments and for me especially accustic grand pianos. Alot of other youtubers have given the meze not the greatest review based on resolution, but Iv listend to alot of their favorites with high resolution, and grand piano sounds anemic. Meze empyrean gives the live experience, the accustic instrumnts sound as crisp, warm and engaging as in real life.

Absolutely agree 💯 Sadly, a lot of reviewers put emphasis on resolution, detail retrieval and stage width and they don't put emphasis on tone, timbre, note weight, natural and realistic staging. I think the Empyrean is spot on when it comes to what matters most, sounding natural and realistic. I am glad you enjoy the Empyrean as much as I do. Thanks for watching and commenting.

This is so true! I have played guitar for over 30 years and recently got into the audiophile world, and can't understand what sound signature people are chasing. The Empyrean is the closest to the natural tones of my acoustic guitars that I have ever heard. So glad to see other musicians hearing what I heard, makes me feel a lot less crazy ! lol

Any audio product should, at the very least, bring the music. The Empyrean BRINGS THE MUSIC! Amazing how many miss the point. Technical specs aren’t possible without music, but the reverse is impossible. Thank you for making that abundantly clear. Let’s not loose sight of the mission. I speak for myself, but I’m always looking for a closer connection to music, not a plot on a meaningless graph.

Funny how music is everywhere, with no BS reviews required for access. Don’t forget the music. If it sounds better, it is better. Have the courage of your convictions. Common sense everyone. Tap into your common sense. Get out of your box and think for yourself. Then you can understand and appreciate the courage Dave had to muster to do the Empyrean review, let alone a fair, objective review of the Elite I can hear the beatings comings. Stand tall Dave. What caused you to change your mind regarding closing down your site. I’m delighted to hear you will continue to review for the benefit of us all, the great unwashed. You’re a leader I’m happy to follow. Kudos for your decision to continue. Welcome back. BTW, for whatever it’s worth, IMHO, the Empyrean provides the most musically engaging and realistic illusion of a musical event I’ve ever heard from a headphone. Not perfect. Nothing is, but as I write it’s the best I’ve heard.

Oops, forgot to talk about the differences in the pads: I prefer the leather pads as they give the most realistic and natural sound that is described in the video. The Alcantara pads add a warmth and thickness to the sound but the details are lost slightly and the overall sound isn't as natural sounding BUT it is a fun sound that I also enjoy. @@Dan.a.k.a.bradpitt Wrong way to look at it because then you won’t experience and enjoy a certain level of audio. Simple as that. None of us would be sticking with headphones such as this one if sub 1000$ came close in terms of detail, timbre, soundstage etc.

@@Dan.a.k.a.bradpitt That totally depends on what you’re into. Currently I am into headphones and the HE1000SE transport me into audio orgasm territory. At one point i was into motorcycles and my disposable money went into that. Strictly speaking neither are investments, buy mutual funds for that.

I puchased the Meze Rai solo's partly because of your review(I love them btw!), I also stayed away from the Audeze LCD-2 Classics based on your review. Dave, great to see you be true to your word. For myself, the endgame was Utopia, and then I've found enjoyment in cheaper IEMs. Now I realize, my preferences are pretty adaptable. The Utopia is still the most realistic to my ears, especially when listening to binaural recordings, spatial dsp, and 3D game audio. Congrats!

I can relate to that feeling, I haven't heard the Empyrean but years ago, I heard a pair of headphones that had been hyped to the moon and back. Thinking to myself, meh, how good could they be, before putting them on..... Heard Andrea Bocelli - Conte Partiro and my jaw hit the ground, floored me. That headphone was the HD650. I just bought these too. You nailed, it is indeed end game level. Many reviewers dislike these but the trick is these scales unbelievable good. Also the leather pads is the way to go. With Alcantara these sound like any other headphone. With leather pads it is just like im in the room with players. Information level is out of hook. As ex musican these gives the sound and decya and reverb of notes the best of any headphone. And i got HD800, LCD-X, hifiman arya STAX L700 and these beast all of those with ease. But with high end dac and amp. I use ifi pro idsd and omg. This is too the end of gear hoarding for me. 😊

Hi Dave! I have enjoyed many of your videos and will miss seeing you. I also love my Meze Empyrean, which I have owned for almost 2 years. As you noted the stock cable is not ideal. A better cable is the Meze upgrade copper cable, or the Corpse Cable Gravedigger. From the time I got my Empyrean, it was my favorite headphone, until yesterday, when I received my new Meze Elite. Yes, it is a significant improvement over the Empyrean. There is a good review of the Elite on Headfonia. I hope you get a chance to hear the Elite.

It is certainly obvious in listening to you speak of these headphones that you are passionate about them and your pursuit of fine sounding audio, and congratulations on your purchase. Three grand is too rich for me but I wouldn't judge anyone based on how they spend their cash. I own the Audeze LCD-2 and have the Focal Celestee on the way, and that will most likely be my last headphone purchase as well. I've known for all too long that the journey can be a lot of fun but one day it's key to find something one can live with because there are more things in life than just audio gear. Very nice review, enjoy those beautiful headphones and be well, Amigo. Best of luck in your future endeavors.

A new empyrean was released called the empyrean elite. Seems like a more technically capable version of the original empyrean, apparently it uses a new diaphragm material and a new driver. Seems like meze wants to produce a very detail oriented headphone.

Oh boy, that is truely a Headphone to quit over! I would love to own a pair myself but the pricetag is a bit out of my range. Sad that you go but it fits in the time when i started to delete other reviewers because it seemed to me they were either having compleatly different ears than me or were Spouting BS. Well you were the last one to be in my Abo-list and you will stay there for when you may feel like it I will watch your Video. Hope you stay save and sound during this wild times and i mean Homeoffice may never have sound better then it will now :). Have a good life and take care.

Too steep for me, however, I have a pair of Meze 99’s that I’ll have forever. I also much prefer diffuse field tuning. Love the channel. Great stuff!

Dude, this review was just amazing, you covered literally everything I wanted to know about these. One day, when I finish college and get a job, I hope to get a pair of these, but until then, I'll just keep dreaming and hoping, but hope is still a powerful thing. These took the place of the LCD-X as my new dream headphones. Never change, I love your reviews.

Congratulations 👏. I'm going to end my journey soon too. My collection is going to be complete. And the headphone that I chose to complete it with is the verite closed. Its a weird feeling since I loved the hobby and loved to learn about all the ins and outs of it. But I don't feel like ill get more impressed with headphones outside of my collection. I followed your philosophy of getting what I like rather than following hype trains. You will be missed and all the best with your next chapter.

Have loved watching your videos, and happy for you that you’ve found your headphone end game! Will you still search for an IEM end game? Also I like the sports car analogy. Something about the logo and name remind me a lot of Maserati.

@@TheHonestAudiophile Great news! I got my hands on the MEST MKII, and feel like that's my end game. Only issue is it's a little too pricy for me to feel comfortable walking around. Any recommendations for ~$300? I enjoy a neutral sound with accented bass and good sound stage.

@Sam G I would say the Moondrop Blessing 2 but the bass may be too light for you. Also the ADV M5-1D is a little on the warm neutral side and slightly above budget. The ADV GT3 has changeable filters that can adjust sound and it is a neutral sound. Awesomeness, I am glad you have found your end game IEM. Congrats! I have heard good things about the MEst mk2.

@@TheHonestAudiophile Thanks for the recs! I tried the Blessing 2, but like you said the bass is very light. Other than that I was very impressed. Maybe I'll go for the Dusk version, which seems to be ~the same with a bass boost👌
