I am just randomly watching this for something to do whilst sat in my digger but i am so pleased because i printed off the pdf and put all the pages in one of them binders which neatly pushes underneath the desk thus blocking the vent for the fan which i wasnt aware of , pdf now has a new home thanks fella.

I'm glad you put this up and I found it. We use a S16 connected to our X32 with a 175 foot CAT5e run for the AES50 circuit strung up kind of high overhead in the ceiling. A really bad electrical storm produced enough EMI over the roof of our building and blew out some of the AES50 circuits which are actually pretty sensitive to that. My X32 is out of warranty and I can't deal with the time and expense to ship it out for repairs. I found a source for a new replacement main PCB and watching this video gave me the comfort level I needed to dig in and swap out the board. Thank you so much!

Faders are always the weak point of any console. And it is just good practice to have spares available. But our X32 is still going great after this many years. One fader has started to get a little sticky from some construction dust, but that is about it.

Thanks for the video. Very informative and was looking to get one of these or a presonus mixer. This had very detailed information about this mixer and each part. I have done some soldering, but never removed a part from a PC board and replace and resolder it back. Would like to see a demo of this. So many things are now stamped right in the board. They make it so you need to replace the whole board. The solder joints are so small. Possibly replace a xlr/ 1/4 combo plug on a board would be great. Seems simple just have never seen it or point me to a vid that shows such example. Thanks Rob

You missed out the 'Secret infuriating screw' found underneath in the centre by the foot! That baffled me for ages as you can't lift the top section up until you do! My tip for the day! Another tip is to separate all the different screws into their own pots. In this case you could use the Sides as they have a series of compartments. If any are left over you will see where they are from. Nice vid mate!

Wow, what a great video. It was good to see you reinforce some of my own practices, when doing repairs, and to give me ideas for the future. Ive taken apart a Pro2 now and can say, despite it's much higher price tag, it is MUCH easier to disassemble than the X32. I look forward to what you do next. Maybe an M32 or Pro1. Thanks again!

Is it possible that the air gap is by design? Perhaps to avoid having to dedicate a second fan to cooling small but non-negligible heat from the DSPs or radiated by the power supply enclosure?

The main reason they started to sell the faders is that they made a whole new production line for there new faders, hence they plan to sell the faders to other mixer makers that currently purchase ALP for example. As far as I know, they put the same faders into the MIDAS M32 mixers and may very well also do it in newer MIDAS digital mixers. From what I understand, they also use the same faders in there new Behringer X-Touch (100mm touch sensitive motor faders so I assume it's the same faders), hence the extra market for these faders, hence the extra production and "spare parts".

Hey Marcus, an old vid and that, but thought of a pro-tip. Freezer spray on "hot-snot" makes it very brittle and release adhesion... a gentle pry with a small driver and it's gone.

Thanks mate. Mines OK for now .... it's not a deal breaker. I bought it brand new and have done multiple hardware repairs. XLR latches(removed them after having a few lock the XLR plug inside). Replaced the USB socket ( that was my fault for lifting console up off the desk while it was still plugged in) and last but not least I had a 'lazy' fader. Wd40 fixed that. So I get what you mean about unreliable (from a hardware perspective anyway). I still think it's an awesome piece of kit for the price but my next upgrade when finances allow will be a real Midas. The m32R looks like the go. Thanks again for the video.

Marc, everyone doing service on mixers know that spilling drinks and beer on the mixer requires change of a lot of faders sometimes ;) On analog mixers you can probebly wash/rinse and lubricate, but on digital and motorized, no...

Great but you forgot the daughter board , which controls all the audio flow in and out of the board. The daughter board processes the audio out of the X 32 . The daughter board has a micro SD card which has software that tells the board what to do,and contains The X 32 or M 32 Logo.

Thanks. Just looking at the Build Quality (which I love watching and doing, but not as experienced as you) I will absolutely be buying my X-32 next week. are you sure about the tape over the fan housing? Sometimes the gap/open space cause air to move quicker, I think. Just saying. anyway, awesome video.

If I was to make a guess, the 48khz limit, rather than the ADSP limit is down to data bandwidth requirements. The CPU they've used, but also the storage. 32 channels at 192khz written to an SD card is likely to be a problem - again guessing.

Came in this morning and powered on the X32 only to find that only the main LCD display will boot up. No other lights or indicators will illuminate. Control do not work. Thankfully I have the mixer on a network with a computer running x32edit. It seems the CPU and the basic inputs and outputs still work and I can control the mixer with the application. This should get me through this day's sessions. This is the latest issue on this mixer. Last fall the mixer started making loud thumping noises through the main amps/speakers during boot up.And a couple month's before that the mixer started making loud thumping noises through the main amps/speakers 50% of the time during boot up. After several weeks of that it mysteriously stopped doing that. Then a few weeks ago, the actuators on faders 1-8 stopped working. The actual controls still worked but the sliders no longer moved when switching layers. I had ordered a replacement PCB for that section of the mixer due in a week or so. But now this problem has occurred. From the research I have gleaned off the internet, it may be a power supply related problem so I will order the part. Watching your video has given me confidence in cracking this thing open and attempting the repair myself. That, and it's also out of warranty. Hoping the problem is the power supply. Its disappointing that this mixer is having so many problems and its only 2 years old. I have had old analog boards last for many years without a problem.

They are selling the faders because faders are wear material. If it's a professional mixer, you've got to sell spare parts at least when it comes to wear material. Same goes for the fader knobs. Those are the two things on the X32 that will wear significantly. I can't really see why this would be suspicious. I would say it shows, that behringer takes the X32 and the customers seriously.

@peterletran
@peterletran 5 лет назад
You've mentioned several issues the x32 has without even realizing it. Many of the buttons, encoders and faders have a very short life span. The faders collect "biscuit crumbs" and hair (as well as any other debris). The buttons collect dust and get stuck halfway in or halfway out. and the "infinite rotary" encoders get rather fidgety over time. Especially for consoles that do not get covered after every single use. It is very frustrating. I purchased one of these when they were fairly new for approximately ~$3,500, and sending it in (as you mentioned in either this or a previous video) is a complete hassle. Especially, when you don't have $3,500 laying around for a spare console to replace the one you're sending in for repairs. I'm very frustrated. I expected this hardware to function much more reliably.

Hello, I’ve seen your video on youtube about the X32. I have a problem with the power supply and the resistor R4 on the board is burnt and have no way to read the value on it. I can fix the problem swapping the capacitor but without the resistance value I can not do it. I you please have any info for that it’ll be wonderful. Thank you.
@Mtaalas

They sell spares since even the most expensive digital mixers (and analog too) go through faders like there's no tomorrow in serious use. It's just the fact that they're getting a lot of use and when switching layers etc. they're moving constantly. In serious use they can get 300-500 cycles *daily*. And using very high quality faders can help, but the amount of cycles and reliability you get isn't the worth of the money they cost. After all, no audio signal goes through the fader on digital mixer so no need to use a fader that costs 8 or 16-times more and might last 2 or 4 times more use before giving up. :)

Thanks for that teardown video, very interesting! Have you, by chance, made any nice photographs you could share? I'd me most interested in the Mic Pres (what parts they use as the first stage amp)... For me, it's really impressive that they get all this functionality out of two meager DSPs, it's only two parts clocking at 266 MHz, after all, doing EQ, Dynamics, routing for that many channels. They must have put in a *lot* of thought to reduce their part-count to the level where they could sell the device for that (comparably) little money.

Hi there, I have just bought a 2 yr old x32 Compact and as you said great kit for the money.. I wonder if they should have made a version without all those back inputs outputs since many of us use the snakes and whether that would have significantly reduced the weight and cost. Its such a waste for so many since they will need a snake anyway. Really interesting to hear about the AD/DA converters and questions why Behringer never gave up the option of a higher sample rate even maybe just 96 over the 48 that is the highest option available. Strange indeed, grrr

Ear jack on the side is not connectet when you put it back together. The wire black and red in the main suply 120v/240v ac or dc, must be close together if they are to separate the can couse hum in the audio signal or in the digital system, that is a teardown.

Hi Markus. I have the same desk. I have a problem that the mixed bus xlr outputs 1 to 8 are dead. I can send signals to them and I can see the signals. If I solo them I can hear the signals but I get no signals out of the physical outputs. I have checked the routing and it is definitely correct. Unfortunately I am in Africa and the nearest agent is 2000 km away. Any ideas or suggestions. Maybe I should just get them to send me another output board and swap them. Now that I know what it looks like inside thanks to you.

Very nice Job you've done there ;) I'm curious if the faders from Midas PRO Series (like in the M32) would fit in the X32. If you look at booth consoles, they have nearly the exact same layout (apart from the housing for the LCD and the Gate/EQ knobs, which is a little bit steeper in the M32). If the faders from the M32 would fit into the X32 with no problems, they could be a good option for a lasting replacement (estimated cycles X32 faders = 300 000 VS. M32 = 1000 000).

If that is all that is in this mixer i am not sure where the embedded linux processor is? Something must be running the UI, file system, Ethernet remote control etc. There might be a soft core in that FPGA but i wouldn't expect that. That FPGA looks like it is doing the AES50 stuff.
@TheSlowGrowth
@TheSlowGrowth 9 лет назад
Yes, the FPGA does the AES50 stuff. KLARK TEKNIK (the designers of the protocol) have an SDK for that series of FPGAs that you can get for free. They do this to make you include the protocol in your gear so it gets higher market share. I doubt that this sdk is radically different from what they have running in the X32. The FPGA might actually runa soft core, but all the display stuff will require a lot of memory - and I doubt that the FPGA is large enough to make that possible. I could imagine that one of the DSPs is running all that management/UI stuff. After all, a DSP is nothing but a microprocessor with special commands an peripherals. Heck, they might even have another processor inside the display assembly (which i think is more likely). Its always good to keep the UI away from your realtime-critical audio computations. I was wondering where they put all the memory. 4 stereo Delay/Reverb effects need quite a bit of memory to work with delay times up to 3sec. I've seen a memory chip next to each of the DSPs but I wonder if that's all. Especially Reverbs need a lot of memory to sound good. So little memory is a good indication of a poor reverb. Unfortunately there is no dedicated sound example-video showing the quality of the effects.

That said I was hoping that someone that still have( or repair) those mixers could enlighten me , but it seems that you're the only one brave enough to perform a complete teardown of that machine. Do you know some chip with at least 6 ADC inside? Maybe compatible with the i2s protocol? P.S. English is not my primary language so if you're reading a sentence and you ask yourself "what is that supposed to mean" that's definitively my fault

Giorgio Armignacco Hi Georgio im still old fashioned and only really make things myself that are older style analog circuits so have never really looked into what ADCs are available . better to look into google and im sure theres plenty of dacs etc with many channels that you can buy today.

Not sure if you're still interested in an answer but Music Tribe uses their own adc's on these units now. Midas m8000 I believe they're called. When they were cirrus they were the same adc on the m and x.

Any advice for trying to repair one of the LCD scribble strips? It shows the color background correctly but no words (blank screen). It is definitely a problem and not a setting. Thanks! :) enjoyed the video, but after seeing how tight those scribble strips are packed together I am nervous about trying to fix the problem now
@markusfuller
@markusfuller 7 лет назад
Richard McMahon Hi Richard. I got rid of my X32 a long time ago but I think the scribble strip display is just a small glass lcd which is attached by a tiny ribbon cable, maybe the ribbon has come slightly loose in its connector and could just need a slight wiggle?. if one of the contacts are not quite seated properly then the whole display of that one scribbble strip may not work.

The X32 can run at 44.1 or 48 KHz so it's quite interesting it has converters that can run at 192 KHz. Is there a sonic advantage for using these converters, apart from being Cirrus Logic converters, and are these the top CL converters (i don't know if they have different kinds lol)? I guess it means the software is the main reason for running on lower sample rates? Behringer claims to use ALPS faders. Can you verify that? Love your videos, they are really, really interesting, you dare to go where many don't :)
@swedishspymuseum
@swedishspymuseum 8 лет назад
+Synthelicious Sorry but Behringer don't use ALP faders in X32. They built a whole new production line in there new factory making these faders. Otherwise it's no way in hell that could sell the mixer for such a low price. ALP faders each cost around 30USD for 100mm faders. 30x25= 750USD for just the faders. add then the rest inkl. mini LCD, large LCD, chassis, Cirrus Logic ADC and for they still managed to sell the console for approx. 3000USD. No, they don't use ALP faders and they are even proud to tell you they don't...
@MortSubitegoddamnit
@MortSubitegoddamnit 8 лет назад
+Synthelicious My guess would be the conversion is hampered by the available processing power of the rest of the console, and not the converters. This also plays into the x32s price point, so the tradeoff is a cheaper console with less horsepower, and therefore an inability to processing audio at 192k by design, not by incompetence or malice.

Hi Markus. I have an x32 Producer with a dodgy rotary encoder that doesn't keep up with the speed you turn it at ... if you get my drift ... The rotary encoder is one of the row of six directly beneath the LCD. In your experience are these serviceable?
@markusfuller
@markusfuller 8 лет назад
Hello those rotary encoders can be replaced. there are only a few points to unsolder. I am not sure if they are the same type that is used in the BCR-2000. I cannot check mine as I got rid of it a long time ago because it was constantly unreliable.

Whow - very interesting, specially the 96K thing ;) As I am nearsighted and would love to put a vga monitor on it only for mirroring the lcd screen to a big one - do you think it's possible to get a vga signal (or another standard video signal) out of it? (Perhaps with some programming using an FPGA like the "2seemy" board for the old KORG D3200)?

sounds like there and whole board issues with the unit. as you have some of the boards of 8 units in working order I would check voltages against the boards of 8 that have failed. other than that I got rid of my behringer a long time ago as it kept developing new problems so I cannot open mine to have a look for you to try and give a clue where to start.sorry about that but good luck.

I am having to replace one of the input cards and 2 faders are sticky. Can you pull the ribbon connector off the input card or does it have to come off with the ribbon attached? ...and do I have to desolder the faders to replace them?
@markusfuller
@markusfuller 8 лет назад
+theheilious Hello Im not too sure as I have not got my Behringer any longer. I guess you may have to do a bit od desoldering though to get the sliders off but it will only be 3 solder joints as I think the Motor is on an unpluggable cable. Good luck

That's interesting that Behringer uses the SHARK ADSP 21371, because they are 32Bit. I'm remember Behringer saying, that the X32 has 40 Bit DSP's for unbeatable headroom in the internal signal flow. Maybe there is another 8Bit DSP and 32+8 are 40 :-) Probably the same PR bullshit like in the valve compressors, where the tube is not in the signal path, just a light.

The SHARCs support 32 and 40bit floating point.
@Monoteur

Christian Vogel The Analog Device spec's says 32 bit. www.analog.com/en/processors-dsp/sharc/adsp-21371/products/product.html
@cnvogel

audiam It's kind of implicit because of the general architecture (the SHARCs are available for 20 years now), and indeed, the datasheet (ADSP-21371_21375.pdf, Revision D, download from the page you linked to) says, in the first line on the title page: ❝High performance 32-bit/40-bit floating point processor optimized for high performance audio processing. ❞ Here's a little more information about this architecture: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Super_Harvard_Architecture_Single-Chip_Computer For comparison, an old pentium (Intel 586) was a 32bit CPU (data and address bus widths), but had a 80bit floating point unit (the old 387 design) built in.

Hi Benjamin. Sounds like you have a serious problem going on there if the screen does not light up. maybe when you did an update the software was not complete. I would get in touch with Behringer and tell them the problem. maybe they would suggest trying the software update again or you may have to send it back to be repaired. Sorry I do not have the answer for you on this one but I hope you get it corrected. Best wishes from Markus

16:25 .... HAHAHA .... priceless! I have a neighbor named Mark Fuller, who'd have thought.... Your personality is much more to my liking though. No more scrapping your videos! Thanks a lot for this video. I have been looking into the X32 Compact or Producer, would you say that it is a decently built and engineered product. My other option would be either an A&H Qu-16 (UK built, not made in China), or the Soundcraft Expression 1. With the A&H you cannot expand beyond 16 channels, with the Soundcraft you cannot at this time, use a digital snake, AND multi-track recording at the same time, and either would require an additional interface card. This X32 series seems like it has a lot of features for the money, and expansion/scalability seems to be better than the competition. Any input would be most appreciated. OH, I've come across something called CorrosionX, it's a spray that is supposed to be safe for electronics, and I've seen it used on a PCB that was then submerged in water and still powered up and working. Any experience with that sort of thing? I may just have to try it on one of my less expensive pieces of gear, a Numark Mixtrack Pro 2, and see if it still works, and if faders don't mind it. Thanks again for the video, +1 sub......
@markusfuller
@markusfuller 10 лет назад
Hi Isaiah, I have heard of the CorrosionX but never actually tried it for myself, it sounds as if it would be excellent for coating boards but i would be cautious not to let it get onto the carbon contacts or tracks of faders just incase it coats the track and stops the carbon conducting through to the wiper.
@isaiahfurrow7414
@isaiahfurrow7414 10 лет назад
markusfuller I'm going to try the CorrosionX on my Numark Mixtrack Pro 2, but not until I'm ready to completely do without it. I've upgraded to another controller, but still use the MTP2 quite a bit, once I get another backup/portable option squared away, I'll give it a shot and let you know how it fares..... The faders are the only part that I've been wondering about, I'll have to look into that some more... thanks again for the input. I'd love to hear your input on the X32, is it built well, or at least on par with other mixers in a similar price range? I've got the X32 Compact or Producer at the top of my list. Keep shining.....
