Actually, the story behind the villain persona dates back to 93, when his brother, Subroc (which he makes reference to in the second to last song) died in a car accident. That same week, the rap group he was a part of, KMD's album, Black Bastards got shelved, due to a controversial art cover, and the whole group got dropped from the label. All of this happened within a the time span of a week, so I think that him wanting to stay away from the mainstream industry has to do with the fact that he was treated so terribly on the label that they were supposed to propel him to mainstream success in the first place.

Doom is not doctor doom but came up with the idea of the character after he thought music was being sold on image rather than the actual music. Anyway your channel is fucking dope man.

99% positive the sample in "Hey" is from scooby doo. The character's voices in the background makes me think thats where its from.

He modeled his villain persona after Dr. Doom which is from both Fantastic Four and Spiderman. He also uses his other persona Viktor Vaughn as another reference to doom as i think the character's real name is Viktor von Doom.

So yeah, the skits at the beginning of his projects are samples from old fantastic 4 cartoons. They're talking about Dr. Doom in the skits but he edits them to sound like they're talking about him , MF DOOM. Also, the sample on Hey is from scooby doo. You can hear scooby doing that "ruhh??" sound. I really hope you listen to more MF DOOM projects. I think listening to the old KMD albums Mr. Hood and Black Bastards really kind of set the whole picture of MF DOOM and where he comes from. Yes, you are correct. MF DOOM is actually inspired by Marvel's Dr. Doom, hence his villainous persona. That is why he mostly wears green and a metal mask, just like Dr. Doom. Daniel Dumile was a fan of comic books and superheroes, which is why a lot of his art work and covers look like comic panels. Dr. Doom was a prominent villain back in the day and is the reason why he samples from classic FF4 and Spider-man cartoons to enhance his narrative. He has also made songs that dissing superheroes, which are rather funny. Fun fact: the comic book and cartoon Dr. Doom often uses minions disguised as him to ward off and confuse the superheroes. This inspired MF DOOM to use minions in his stead at live shows. Many people got understandably upset, but the dude is playing his persona to a T!

i remember i ordered the 12 inches/singles before the album came out, and i swear it was like a time bubble opened up above my turntable. than when the album came out, i bought the cd off sandbox distrubution , i had to go to my library to use the internet and order it, i and once i heard it, i took out a advertisement in my yearbook for the album. i told every single person i knew, about the album. every where i went i tagged MF DOOM/kmd on the wall,. I even had fondle em stickers than i posted in my lunchroom, and no one ever took it down. i saw MF DOOM at wetlands and shook his hand when he was coming through the crowd to the stage, he a white knicks jersey on with a towel around his neck and no mask. Doom is really an author.He went through a lot of pain to make the great art that he did. anyways, i feel like he was a friend. i will always miss him and be grateful-peace/condolences to his family

accessible + being older = timeless Music of this quality does not diminish with age. Amazing is amazing forever and only trash is short lived.

Highly recommend Dooms collaborative albums as well. I know Madvillan was already reviewed, but DangerDoom, JJdoom, NeruvianDoom, MaDoom and SadeVillan are really good.

Dooms production on tic is insane. He samples the violin sections from the end of "Bungalow Bill" by the Beatles.

Operation Doomsday was his best work hands down. It’s an amalgamation of his past and present and where he’s about to take us. It’s a reintroduction to his new persona (which led me down a rabbit hole of hip hop history, KMD the movie WildStyle etc) His wordplay rhyme schemes story telling were top of the game. He didn’t get too weird yet that came later, maybe he got a bit comfortable idk. Not to say he didn’t have bangers later but this project felt more cohesive as a whole and just spewed pure raw uncut hiphop, something that was missing. The timing of this album was impeccable and much needed considering the state the culture was in at the time.

This was Doom's debut album (as MF DOOM) and the production values were more lo-fi in comparison to his contemporaries who had the benefit of a larger budget from more established labels. He was on Bobbito Garcia's fledgling underground label Fondle Em Recordings.

The violin from Tick, Tock is from the outro of Glass Onion by The Beatles. Having listeed to both of these songs for years I only realized the connection of the two a couple days ago.

i know you can search this up but here is the simple run down: MF DOOM and his brother, SubRoc, created a graffiti group back in the mid 80s which they called K.M.D. (Kausing Much Damage), eventually they began to get into Hip-Hop and in 1989, (under the name Zev Love X), MF DOOM was featured in the prominent rap group, 3rd Bass's song called "The Gas Face" in their Cactus Album released under Def Jam. This was his 1st appearnce as an MC. Roughly 2 years later, KMD, (Now with a new member, Rodan, which was on "Who you think I am?" on OPERATION DOOMSDAY) they released MR.HOOD, their debut album, in 1991. It garnered small success and lead the group to create a new album. The album, which was supposed to be releasd in 1993, was called Black Bastards. However, due to contraversial cover art, subjects, and messages, the album was shelved and K.M.D. was dropped off their record label. The same month, Subroc was killed in a car accident, this caused DOOM to go on a hiatus for a few years after, dealing with alcohol, drugs, homelessness, betrayal by the rap industry and the death of his younger brother. During this period, DOOM swore to declare war on the industry that banished him, getting inspiration from Doctor Doom's similar story of downfall and revenge. He also spent those years recording OPERATION DOOMSDAY in the basement of his good friend, MF GRIMM, where he released it in 1999, reinventing himself and creating a new world for this newly developed DOOM character. He also formed Monsta Island Czars (M.I.C) which went on to release "Escape From Monsta Island" which featured many of the prominent members and had DOOM'S production, i suggest you check it out Shawn, thx.

Hey, Shawn, around 6:40 you asked if DOOM passed the mic to himself - he was part of a group called Monsta Island Czars and members of the group gave themselves names of Godzilla characters. So on a couple tracks King Gheedra is featured - that's actually DOOM, but he addresses those two names as two different people in-song. DOOM actually released a project as King Gheedra called Take Me To Your Leader. You should check it out, it's pretty good

If you do another DOOM album please do his alter ego Viktor Vaughn on the Vaudeville villain album I would say under madvillainy its his best piece of work. Considering you have mm..food, madvillainy and now doomsday under your belt, next step would be vaudeville villain.
