Another delightful video Jacob. It was the highlight of my day! Question for you: I am working on The Little Bird Quaker Sampler and using silk floss (in the magnificent colour Tulip by Classic Colorworks Belle Soie) but am finding it likes to shed fibres. Is this usual? Is there anything I should be doing to reduce this or is it just a character of the silk? I also loved hearing about the Groningen sampler where my in-laws are from.
@ModernFolkEmbroidery
@ModernFolkEmbroidery 3 года назад
Thank you Kelly! I've pinned this comment in the hopes others will comment on it. I'm not a silk stitcher so I don't know about the fibres shedding. The only reason I can think of is that perhaps the lengths you cut might be a little too long, and the linen you use might be starched a bit harshly. Soaking linen in cold water for a night and then gently rinsing it with more cold water can reduce the over starched quality of some linens. I know some folks also use a stitching wax on their floss but I am not sure how good this actually is as I have never used it. Anyone reading this and who might have advice, do let us know below here! :)

Wax dulls the thread. Use shorter lengths. Wrist to elbow is a good lenght

Dear Jacob , What a FAAAABULOUS visit ! I truly was immersed in the History/show and tell of the Sampler . Jacob - this was a superb answer to Question 1. Thank you for the THOUGHT, and Preparation that you embarked upon to give the Sampler such a Fantastic Homage. Your Q and A to #2 and#3 were superb in there own right as well. And thank you especially for #3 as I am THRILLED that you will be doing an upcoming tutorial on the basics and how you stitch in hand ! Jacob, you are CHARMING and a dear Soul - and that is precisely evident in your designs . I am SO happy that you are sharing your talents for us to see ' up close and personal ' as they say. thank you thank you for this visit indeed . Bravo ! Stay safe you and your loved ones. marcia

My, that Pennsylvania Dutch invitation was surprisingly beautiful! I wasn't expecting such bright colors on a historic piece like that, for some reason. I guess I've seen so many historic pieces with muted colors, or perhaps bright colors that have faded. Fraktur is lovely. Oh my goodness, what a show , I loved every second ! I do not believe you though about not being a romantic ! How could you find such joy in those old samplers if you were not ?! They were so interesting -just thinking of their age and the hands that stitched them ...Thank you for all of the background history , so interesting to me . Thank you so much Mickie! I'm not a romantic in the sense that I don't make a fuss about Valentines at all, and don't do cards and all that.... but I do like the idea of it! But I guess in other ways I am a romantic at heart yes. :D. Cross stitch is getting more popular again and I've found that in the Netherlands a lot of crafters who've done it in the 80s and 90s are now picking it up again. It's great to see so many new crafters join in on the fun as well. I don't have crafting groups as I've only been in Rotterdam for less than a year and the pandemic hasn't really invited meeting up in groups... but I think it would be nice to see some crafters at some point. My sister has started stitching, which is very exciting - so there's me, my mum and my sis who now stitch! :D

@@ModernFolkEmbroidery so it never occurred to me that there were linens woven specifically for samplers! I don’t know why - we do the same in the present day! I wonder - did that start as early as the samplers stitched as references in the 16th and 17th centuries? Or was that more of an 18th century recognition of the market for displaying samplers on the wall? I think I have found a whole new rabbit hole to dive into! :)
@ModernFolkEmbroidery
@ModernFolkEmbroidery 3 года назад
@@gailmagpiestitcher3240 I'm not sure when it started - but I noticed that in Scotland a lot of samplers have nearly exactly the same measurements and are woven on very similar linen. There's a selvedge, which means that this type of linen was woven on a very narrow loom and then hemmed at the top and bottom, and I guess sold for this particular purpose. Where it was woven though I'm not sure. I will do research into this as I am really curious myself. The samplers that I have seen this on are nearly all from the 1800s onwards.

Thank you Jacob for yet another enjoyable informative video.. whilst I’m an avid cross stitcher now I have done many tapestries & absolutely love them.. @ModernFolkEmbroidery 3 года назад
Thank you Ronnee! Wool really is wonderful to stitch with - I used to hand-dye my own wool with natural dyes, which was wonderful but a lot of work... however, stitching with wool is very forgiving also as there's a slight elasticity in the floss that helps with neat stitching. No fuss with splitting threads, and it feels lovely on your hands as well I think :)

The reason I ask because when you showed Fraktur Love I was stunned at its beauty which did not come across to me until I saw your stitched piece.
@ModernFolkEmbroidery
@ModernFolkEmbroidery 3 года назад
Thank you! With regards to photos of stitched designs: percentage wise I've designed way more than I have stitched, so most have to be digital renditions. The advantage is as well that they often look neater in a photo than a stitched model - and that's all precious time I could spend designing / recording videos... it sounds silly, but getting good photos of stitched work is a tonne of work. I might add a red version to the item though...! :D

So glad to see you!!!! Love that large sampler!!! My favorite needles are Piecemakers - they seem like they are a little longer and have a larger eye - my backups are Bohin's - I always use the size 28 as I mainly stitch on 40 or 46 count linen, or I love stitching over one on 28 count. All the best.

Your Love Fraktur sampler is stunning. You did an amazing job with answering the questions...I may have missed you mentioning it, but another advantage of stitching the neighbor's design on your band sampler was to determine how much thread you needed. It was too costly to buy more than needed. 😁 Thank you! I really enjoy your videos.
@ModernFolkEmbroidery
@ModernFolkEmbroidery 3 года назад
Thank you Connie, and that is a really good point! One thing that is interesting though is that some very rich girls would stitch with the most muted colours - like Heika didn't have a lack of money but stitched in black. Similarly, very rich families in Hindeloopen would only work some samplers in red and green, even though they would often visit the shops in Amsterdam to buy expensive fabrics and flosses. So there must have been a reason for using muted colours but unfortunately those reasons are lost to us. With more common people you are absolutely right - it was a great way of estimating how much floss you would need and not exceed that amount.

I also understand the threads were not generally bought by the hank or spool, but by the yard or meter. Wouldn't those stitchers be in awe of the availability of hand dyed colors and price of our flosses now? We are so fortunate!!!😁
@conniejlarsen4416
@conniejlarsen4416 3 года назад
I am also wondering if even tho we would assume plain black thread would be cheaper, it may have been the base of the dye was made from something that was pricier or less available, therefore was not cheaper at all. 🤔
@ModernFolkEmbroidery
@ModernFolkEmbroidery 3 года назад
@@conniejlarsen4416 I think they would be absolutely amazed at the materials that we have at our disposal. Sometimes I think we have a little bit too much, that's why I try and not buy too many tools and things. The black thread Heika used was cheap though - it's a rather thick thread and I cannot make out whether it's a thick silk (which has lost its sheen), a wooly material or a cotton! But it was most likely dyed with something like walnut dye and iron, producing deep blacks. Sadly some of these black dyes were not rinsed out properly so the threads bleed onto the linen very often. Red floss was a complex colour to get right, and there was a whole industry in growing madder and producing red dyes. It was an industry that made towns like Bergen of Zoom in the south of the Netherlands quite rich, but they lost all of that trade in the mid 19th century with the invention of cheap chemical dye. But that's a story for a different floss tube. Once I can travel again and I can visit some of these places safely I plan to show some old dyeing spots (if I can) and tell a little bit more about this! :D

Had not heard about ‘The Zimmerman Coverlet’ prior (for some inexplicable reason), so headed straight to your Website and corrected that situation …such a worthy cause. Was fascinated by the sampler variety foursome. I resisted playing favorites until you presented the Darning Sampler 1874 with dog in silks, yet soon again became enamored by the Embroidered Cloth, Dutch 1860-1890, in chemically dyed wool. Will you be stitching using wools? Or might called-for threads offer this option? Seems the perfect project to have a go with Au ver à Soie Fine d'Aubusson Wool. Whatever fibers are chosen, this colorful piece promises to make the future even brighter 😊 Thank you tremendously for another invigorating video visit.

Thank you so much Lori! That darning sampler from 1874 is really exquisite - it is so finely worked! The chemically dyed one not so much but boy, is that a fun sampler! I'm charting it for DMC in the colours that match it best - but I'm also giving a 2nd option with an alternative, muted palette - I'll be stitching that one. It'll be some time before I'm ready with that one as I do need to do some tests but hopefully it won't be too long though :).

Having stitched a few of your designs already I am now really enjoying your regular videos Jacob, and enjoying the educational information shared too .. My favourite needles for years now have been John James petites, however I just happened to be using one of the ball tipped needles you mention for the first time this morning, as I watch this and think you may indeed like them .. It's very long, both compared to my usual (obviously), but also the regular size my son stitches with, and the eye is half the size of those others too .. It finds the holes very easily on my 40ct, though does require a little more push to get through holes already worked .. Too early to say if it's for me or not, but I wanted to try and am not disappointed .. Also thank-you to the people who allowed you to share their January finishes of the SAL .. Having so much already to work on I didn't sign up, but after seeing them I'm thinking what beautiful ornaments could be made with just the centre designs ~ side note it is mid-Summer here and I've been chasing the birds off my plum harvest, until yesterday when I decided we had enough and they could finish what was left to ripen, so I very feel that particular image of birds and basket of fruit

Thank you Clare! I think I have to definitely try those needles soon... and how wonderful to have fruit trees - it's something I have always wanted. I have to go for big walks to get to fruit trees and berries and all that. Do the birds ever get drunk from the over ripe fruit? :)

@@ModernFolkEmbroidery I have heard of birds getting drunk from fallen fruit before, but we also have free ranging chickens, so anything not harvested or eaten whilst still hanging in the tree quickly get devoured by them .. I'm not sure if I want to chart that particular one but I might use elements from it in a unique 'mock-up' sampler. I do want to get a good sampler though with a ship, so I am keeping my eyes open. I have just bought a Scottish sampler from 1748 that was stitched by the daughter of a captain, and she had a brother who sailed the oceans too. It's a fascinating history - but her sampler only features an enormous (beautiful!) alphabet and a flower border! :D

I'm going to be honest, when it comes to needles, I've never had a particular brand that I favor. I've basically used every brand of needle and can say that one does not tickle my fancy over another. However! I do gravitate towards size 26 needles. I feel like their small enough to work on the finest of linens but big enough to where I don't feel as though I'm struggling to thread the eye of the needle.

I also loved seeing the Scottish samplers, my Mom was born in Glasgow, Scotland so we are always looking at the samplers especially the filigree letters. I typically use Bohin Size 10 or 12 for 45 count. Piecemaker is one of my favorite for 40 count (size 28). But the Bohin 28 is nice too. My dad was of the northern Germanic tribes but they left that area about 4-500 years ago, with my paternal grandmother’s family ancestry coming across on the Mayflower. And as to your other comment - yes! So good to change whatever you want - in my patterns I often don't recommend linen colours or thread colours (only if I use a lot of colours or in a reproduction piece). But even then I will give the recommendation to change colours as you see fit. Girls would have done the same at that time! :)

Jacob There are additional reasons that the letter J & V was not included in the early samplers. The letter J wasn't created until 1524, but because there was no internet or good mail service back then, no phones, etc, the word didn't get out to everyone. Often the the letter 'I' was used interchangeably for the J. The other late arriving letter was the U because the V was used as both the U & the V. The U was added in 1386. Samplers took a long time to encapsulate both of those letters.

Thank you Sarah! It's such a wonderful way to make things I think. As for the edges, as I mostly do a hem stitch I don't need that much fabric. I also tend to stitch in hand, so there's not an issue with big hoops or frames that I need to keep in mind. I've been saying it quite a few videos, but I will at some point do a video on the hem stitch and how to finish the pieces in the way that I do it :). I'm excited to order a whole batch of different needles and I will try some beading needles too. I know some have very sharp tips, which makes it hard to stitch with as you keep poking through the threads and splitting them if you're not careful. For extremely fine linen it's not such a big deal but with 32 count it can be troubling.
