Jacob, Today is February 20. I have been watching the news of the storms in the UK and Europe. I see the Netherlands have been impacted too. I am keeping you in prayer that you will be safe and suffer no damages. This is so dreadful and heartbreaking for all who are affected. I hope you will be able to read this and please let us know you are safe. Much love and concern. Sherrie in the US.

Hi Sherrie! Thank you so much for the message - I've not been on RU-vid in a few days so I missed it! Thank you so much for your concern - it was quite bad here indeed but luckily all are safe and well. Some really big trees went down near our house - but seeing some of the damage we got away really well!!! :)

Were the Frisyian & Groningen Black samplers unique due to the northern provinces being isolated? Did people not travel or communicate with others in some fashion? I always enjoy your videos because of your research on the history of the samplers you reproduce. Thanks so much for taking the time to share so much with stitchers around the globe.
@ModernFolkEmbroidery
@ModernFolkEmbroidery 2 года назад
That's a really good question Joan and I'm going to write that down to properly talk about. But to answer it a little bit - folks were surprisingly well-traveled at the time, and in the coastal areas especially there was a constant influx of influences from other areas and abroad. The black stitching was not, as some believe, a sign of mourning (though undoubtedly black mourning samplers have been made) but were a tradition that started in the very late 18th / early 19th century. And it also didn't have anything to do with poverty as these black samplers were mainly stitched by girls from rich farming families. As they themselves (or their parents) were rich and there was constant trade with cities like Amsterdam, they could have gotten all the colours in the world - yet they mysteriously only stitched these samplers in black. This is a tradition mainly found in Groningen. Frisian girls on the other hand would use colourful silks in their samplers. They share some similarities with Groningen samplers (or rather, Groningen samplers share characteristics of Frisian samplers) with certain motifs that are found on samplers from both areas. Frisian girls would sometimes stitch a black sampler, although they are rare. The Frisian ones were supposedly stitched as examples for the use of certain linen items - I belief some cribs had some black embroidery bits (although I could be wrong on that - I would need to double check that...!)

I truly appreciate all the hard work in researching your samplers history. I love sharing this with with husband who finds it fascinating. I'm currently working on Tree of Life Chart. Black floss on a medium blue 32ct linen. Sheri from Colorado cross stitcher is having a monthly challenge for the month of February. It had to be a chart to be finished monochromatic. So I chose your Tree of Life. It is coming along nicely. As I am almost half way complete. It will be my first project stitched on 32ct. So I am very proud of myself. Thank you for all your inspiration Jacob.

Thank you so much for further explanation on some of the symbols on your pattern. I think I would have preferred it in stitching in black. When I selected the thread I narrowed my floss Bedazzled and Desert Mesquite. I selected the green but I'm rather disappointed with the results. It is very striped in appearance.
@ModernFolkEmbroidery
@ModernFolkEmbroidery 2 года назад
Thank you Carolyn! I'm sorry to hear that... if you don't like the look after the first part I'd say call it a day and start with a new colour... it'd be a shame if you ploughed through with another couple of months to really realise that you don't like it at all, and it will really stop you from enjoying working on the design. It doesn't have to be black, but a good dark monochrome will make it stand out really nicely. You could opt for one of the two colours but maybe insert one strand of solid DMC to make it less stripey? It's always worth giving it a go before completely giving up on it... :)

So interesting to hear about the history and meaning of the samplers. Did the stitchers have patterns of motifs and they would choose from those what to add to their samplers? Or would they copy samplers that were around to look at? We are all copying these old samplers, but I think it would be kind of fun to start making unique samplers that reflect where we are from, our interests and the current happenings.

Hi Jacob, good to see your new flosstube video. I just started stitching part 2 of the 2022 SAL and I love it. With regard to one of the comments below, you made it clear that this year's SAL is an antique reproduction and, therefore, that would mean it's not one of your original designs and unlike previous years' SALs. I knew exactly what to expect for an antique reproduction Dutch sampler. I can't wait to see the rest of it revealed as we work through the year. I am working on building a red sampler wall that will include this year's SAL and also your I Am No Bird, Real Comfort, and The Zimmerman Coverlet-A Canadian Heirloom designs, amongst a couple of other red samplers I am currently stitching.
@ModernFolkEmbroidery
@ModernFolkEmbroidery 2 года назад
Oh that sounds wonderful! I love a good red sampler wall :D. And yes, it's always a risk when you don't know what you're getting - but like you said, it was hinted to quite a lot that it was an antique design. You can't win 'em all! :D

I thoroughly enjoy your videos. Touching on the history of my own ancestral homeland. My dad is from Groningen and my mom is from Friesland. Yet if you go back far enough, my dad's roots on his paternal side are also Friesian, and if he were alive today he would not be too pleased. LOL. He was proud to be from Groningen and there was always a friendly rivalry between my mom and dad. LOL. I am learning new things about my roots and the culture of those areas with some of the research you have done on these samplers. I just need more time and money to buy all the samplers and complete them. lol. I hope you are feeling better after your dental work and have healed.

Haha yes, the good ol' rivalry between Groningen and Friesland (or Fryslân as it's known these days by its proper Frisian spelling...! :P). I'm Frisian myself, and I remember there always being friendly rivalry :P. The funny thing is that, when you go back in time far enough, that whole stretch (up to the very south of Denmark down to the coast of Belgium) was all Frisia once, including Groningen... don't tell Groningen folks though as they've always been Grönningers 🤣🤣🤣

Jacob, I missed you and so glad you finally posted an episode. I was stitching on your 2022 SAL and had to stop and look at the sampler while you were explaining all the different motifs. I knew the one motif was a double headed eagle. I didn't know about the dove cote. While I was stitching the stag, I was thinking of the Cluny tapestries. Interesting.

Thank you Sherry! It's good to be back again :). The Cluny tapestries indeed have this walled garden thing going on as well. I was very lucky to see it a couple of years ago when we were in Paris and the tapestries are absolutely stunning to see. I do want to see the Unicorn Tapestries in the MET museum though, as they're also fantastic! :)

It was so good to see you again Jacob! 💜💜 I can’t wait to start your SAL for this year - still trying to find the perfect fabric, paralysed by all the possibilities!

Thank you Tess! Haha - it's a tricky beast isn't it with all the fantastic options out there! I just dyed some linen myself and I'm really happy with that - it's great fun to do as well! You can also just close your eyes and stick your hand in the linen pile and pick one... and then pick a thread to go with it. It'll be quite interesting to see what you choose then!

@@ModernFolkEmbroidery if I had a stash big enough, I would totally do that! Because I tend to stitch full coverage I find I have to buy pieces specially for projects. I was in a fabric of the month club for a while, but the pieces are too small unfortunately. I might buy some dye and try and make my own though, that sounds fun!

@@TessStitches It's a lot of fun indeed! I dye with tea mostly - it's economical, and garners beautiful results. Just make sure to use black tea as that is a plant that can be really used as a dye - and you only need to 'brew' a big pot (pan) of strong tea. The longer you leave the fabric in, the darker it will get. It's great fun to do! :)

Hi from South Africa. Isabella's Heart is beautiful, my wedding anniversary is in March so I have decided this is what my hubby can bless me with :-). I battle to get linens here where I live, so primarily use 18 count Aida. Looking at the design picture it seems I would be able to stich this pattern on Aida? I would need to also try get the closest DMC colors as postage is ghastly from the US to SA at this time. Great to see you again and that you are well. Missed your video and I thoroughly enjoy hearing about the history of the samplers you share.

Thank you Nicole! Yea I can only imagine that it will be quite hard to get materials to certain corners of the globe. If you shoot me a message on my email (contact details can be found both on my RU-vid and my website) I can try and find out the DMC alternative for you - it'll always be a 'guestimate' but I'll make sure they'll be three colours that go well together :). It's still pitch dark here in the Netherlands at the moment so I'll try and do it later in the afternoon when I get some sunlight in my studio!

I think German Vierlandens are also all black. They certainly do have have a striking visual presence, pieces stitched in black.

Yes! The Vierlande samplers are fully black as well and there's a theory that the black Groningen samplers might have influenced the Vierlande samplers - or perhaps it was the other way round! There's great uncertainty as to why exactly the colour black was picked - but they are very striking and the samplers are absolutely wonderful to look at I think :)

Do you know if antique samplers were usually stitched in hand, or if they stretched the fabric? If they stretched it, how did they do that?
@ModernFolkEmbroidery
@ModernFolkEmbroidery 2 года назад
It's a mixed bag really - often you can't tell if they were or weren't but it's a bit of both really. There's lovely antique hoops that have survived (I've got one in my collection) and of course there's the standing frames as well. But I know that quite a few girls would have just sewn their crosses onto the linen or fabric they were using. In the Netherlands for instance many people don't learn to use a hoop at all but they just stitch in hand. So it depends on the technique of the teacher :).

Мне не нравится новый sal. Надеялась что будут такие же красивые как 2018-2021 года. С удовольствием купила, вышила и оформила 2021. Очень жалею ,что купила тайный проект . Вышивать не буду.
