MG has launched the new HS model in one of the busiest parts of the Australian new car market. Competing with big-name players, the all-new MG HS model will need to offer more than just good value for buyers to consider it. So, how does it stack up?
If you plugged a computer into Australia’s car market and had it design a car, I’m fairly sure it would come up with something like the MG HS.
Does it compete in one of the hottest-selling segments in Australia? Yep, it’s a mid-size SUV. Does it compete on price? Yep, it’s impressively cheap when compared to segment favourites. Is it well specified? Yep, it ticks pretty much every box there is to tick when it comes to gear. Does it look good? Yep, it borrows key styling elements from successful rivals.
Now the tricky one: Is there more to the story? Yep, turns out there is.
See, while MG has made impressive progress with its colour-by-numbers approach to car design, selling increasingly large numbers of its MG3 hatch and ZS small SUV, it’s still had a lot of catching up to do to be considered serious competition for Australian consumers.
So, should you be wooed by the HS SUV? Does it represent true progress for a fledging competitor brand? We went to its Australian launch to find out.
This mid-size SUV is incredibly cheap for the segment.
MG has the HS stickered with drive-away prices of $30,990 for the entry-level Vibe or $34,490 for the top-spec (for now) Excite.
There’s not much between them, and generally the specification ticks off almost every box on our checklist.
Both specs get the impressive 10.1-inch touchscreen and semi-digital dash cluster which looks genuinely impressive, although you can tell where the corners have been cut. The processor for the multimedia software is painfully slow, and the screen quality is average, presenting with both glare and ghosting. The Excite gets built-in nav, but you won’t miss it. It’s extremely slow.
Both specs also get the faux leather trim everywhere, digital radio, LED DRLs, reversing camera with guiding lines, and the full safety suite (skip down to safety to see what that’s all about).
All of that for the price of a base model RAV4, Sportage, or Hyundai Tucson is undeniably good value, no matter which way you cut it.
The Excite only adds LED headlights, 1-inch larger alloy wheels (18-inch), a sport drive mode, the electric tailgate, auto wipers, the laggy nav system, and an ambient lighting package. Nothing necessary there, but the small jump in price doesn’t break the value equation either.

There is only one thing wrong with this car - some will never accept it because it is made by a Chinese company. I test drove one and it had an excellent interior, loads of equipment, plenty of space and it drove well. Touch point quality amazed me and was better than a lot of cars selling for a lot more. With a seven year warranty the value is remarkable. The DCT comments are interesting as our current car is a 2017 Audi A6 with a dual clutch automatic transmission and I would make the same comments but you get used to it and I still prefer it to a manual. If the PHEV price is as competitive then we are planning to buy one when it goes on sale in the UK.

Buying an MG supports the Communist Party of China. People that care about their own economy buy products from people/companies/brands that are designed and/or developed and/or researched in their own country or ally country. The people that work for those local companies, in free democracies, then buy other products developed in their own country or ally country and that keeps their families and friends in work and making money. Stupid people buy direct from Chinese brands and send every single penny out of their country and destroy their own economy and eventually their entire free society because they are cretins and/or greedy and/or want things they can't afford, and rather than wait and save. They are happy to screw over their entire economy in the pursuit of self-gratification, selfishness, and ego. Buying CCP owned brands and products fuels Chinese R&D and weakens free economies. Your children and your children's children will suffer as a result of your choices. This is not hyperbole, it is fact.

Bottom line: All of MG’s cars are pretty good looking, have good up to date tech and safety considering their price but at the expense of average performance. All round, they are decent cars for small time commuting I’d say. It being Chinese manufactured and unproven in the market yet of course will add some apprehension to buyers and yes, the quality of the car isn’t exactly great but honestly for the prices they are plus their 7 year warranty I don’t think they are a bad option at all considering most people can probably finance one at or just under 4 years. Source: Owned and driven an MG3 for over a year.

As a motoring journalist I get that he has to highlight some of the flaws, but slow infotainment system, soft suspension, vague steering, and turbo lag applies to almost all the cars in this price range. Certainly my nissan qashqai has all the same flaws, but it isn't really targeted at people who care about sporty driving. I think it is a big mistake to call MG as not 'mainstream' that my be true for now, but these guys will destroy Nissan and Mitsubishi in my opinion in not much time.

Very promising little car. Most of the issues could be fixed with a bit of tuning for Aussie roads. LDV managed to get Walkinshaw to tune the LDV T60's suspension. It's only a matter of time before they can get this right too. That Dual Clutch lag is found on Skoda's cars too, infuriatingly. Their 7 speed DSG is horrid with 1.4L turbo to drive if it isn't on sports mode.

I have purchased last July Skoda Karoq for 28K with the 7 speed DSG 1.5 TSI 110KW and I like the DSG, no problem at all, nice smooth drive, very punchy performance, just 6.8 l/100 if driving according the road rules(speed limit) nice boot and quality overall, Skoda is much better value than this MG in my point of view.

Haha. Can't stop chuckling at your xenophobia. Nissan, Hyundai, Fiat Chrysler and others are currently closing production lines because of a shortage of chinese parts. [covid19]. You see, Ben, the global village is now so pervasive [and out of sight, until revealed by, say, this virus], that finger pointing at nations is less and less possible without egging your face. True, as this vid points out, Chinese cars lack that final nuance for Oz conditions, yet mums and dads will not care a toss when they see what their dollars give. Those bastard Yanks GM Holden ran off with $270 thousand million dollars of OUR money and so ,for me, deserve out VITRIOL far more.

If it ain't cheap, it must be good. When it comes to chinese products you get what you pay. Everything Uber Luxury Highend to Cheap Dangerous. These seems like the middle ground.

@MrPhilgos your right mate, everything is made in China these days from IPads to Sony TVs plus they have been building cars for years now in partnership with western manufacturers. MG is backed by SAIC who are the biggest car maker in China. People say the same things about Chinese cars as they did about Korea cars and now the Koreans have taken over Huge swathes of many markets.

I think tom with his 7.1 rating should buy one and keep it. The car is junk, stop trying to sell it to consumers.
