They need a major software update. Not telling you the charge port is open is basic stuff. The lack of regen sucks. MG need to sort this out, and quickly.

Thanks Bjorn for doing these tests on entry-level EVs. Not everybody can afford or wants a Model 3 LR so having someone do some objective 3rd party testing on these price-sensitive EVs is amazing. Plus the fact that you put it up on RU-vid for everybody to see is just the cherry on the cake. It's an investment of a s#it ton of time and it's really appreciated. Thanks again!
@glacieractivity

Very true Anthony. These "entry-level" cars are important and deserve attention as much as the 100-200,000 offerings. We all understand that the top-specced Apple Mac Pro will render a video pretty fast - at the cost of ca 50,000 USD. But this is not the computer most people will buy to check Instagram and render a youtube clip.

For the price MG ZS EV is absolutely great daily driver. For work 60 miles a day on congested roads around Manchester is more than sufficient. With overnight charging at 5p/kWh (Octopus Energy) it makes it sooooo cheap (both the car and daily costs). Would not overpay for other "premium" EVs for my usage scenario. We have ICE for longer trips, but on the last few ones we found ourselves using MG anyway, just pleasure to drive and kids always wanna stop every 1.5-2 hours anyway.
@johnbradshaw5900
@johnbradshaw5900 4 года назад
Indeed. If I was driving long distances I wouldn't buy one of these. For a daily use car within its range capability it is a very practical and affordable EV and is an excellent car for the money. If buying an EV I think it important to properly understand your own use case. If you drive 1000km journies a lot then buy a Tesla or PHEV but buying a huge battery if you seldom do more 100km doesn't seem to make much sense.

Another great video Bjorn. I like the 1000 km challenges because they demonstrate real world performance better than what a typical "car show" on tv would, where it is usually fossil fans denigrating EVs because they don't understand them. I really liked your summation at the end where you talked about the difference between good EVs and bad EVs and stated that the good EVs are consistent between summer and winter. That is something that I could show the fossil skeptics in my family that they would understand. Too often they see one review of a not so good EV and they equate that to all EVs are bad. If they could hear someone knowledgeable, like you, talking about EVs that are good and bad, they could relate to that. This is because they understand that just because one fossil is bad, it doesn't mean all fossils are bad (on their terms). One suggestion I would make is to create a shorter "teaser/highlight" video for these longer challenges. I like the longer videos but there are people I would like to share them with that I know do not have the patience to sit through them, even though they would benefit from the information. I know.... more work for you.... ha ha. Keep up the great work Bjorn. I enjoy your videos.

People criticising car and comparing to Tesla's and e-Tron's have to remember the price, its literally half if not less than those other cars. Like Bjorn said, its a good buy. Its the equivalent of comparing an ICE MG to an ICE Audi. They are different cars. Have to remember this when comparing the car to other much more expensive models. Great video Bjorn as always!

The car does have it flaws but there's also much to love about it. Did 630km yesterday on a trip to London. Got 43kw on Ecotricity chargers and 48kw on an Instavolt. That's despite it being about 5 degrees C. Was moderately thirsty but all 3 of us had a very chilled and comfortable trip. First things I'd fix is the charge throttling in colder weather and the lack of regen on ACC. Otherwise, its pretty much perfect for what I need.

It seems like a little bit more care with the software (and with the Mobile app from the Thai version) and this could really be a reasonably good BEV for the money. I hope they sort out the regen and battery pre-heating soon, then it could maybe get into Leaf territory (14h10m). May I suggest you find an iPace and then we can see how it compares to the E-Tron(55) for this challenge, but I guess there are newer software version for both of those now available, so perhaps the E-Tron can improve it's position.

The early charging stop where you mentioned the charge rate won't increase as the temperature increases immediately made me think of an old test where you found the temperature of the battery at the start of the charge session is the limiting factor. The original Ioniq possible? Not sure. Might explain the jump from 49kW to 59kW after restarting the charge at Varberg.

That 12v issue you suffered at mid point of trip really put you on the back foot huh. Doing pretty well up until 6th hour and then wheels fell off. Still it's a big bus of a car but only 10mins slower than Zoe, that's not bad. Smaller battery too but faster charging. I note in the Zoe challenge at 6hrs 30 you had covered 430kms and in 6hrs in MG you had covered 500kms. Shows your second 500kms was real slow. I'd say 115kph top speed in the MG and the Zoe would see you shave a lot of time off both total trip times. Anyhoo, big thumbs up. Looking forward to seeing both Zoe and MG summer 1000k challenge. 👍
@bjornnyland

Nope. Zoe was charging consistenly at 45 kW. At those charging speeds, it pays off to go faster. And ZS EV going too slow would coldgate more resulting in slower charging speeds.

@TravelwithPavel 4 года назад
It should be Taycan 4S + vs Model S LR Raven, Turbo ven though bit slower than Turbo S is still closer to Perfromance Model S and probably faster in almost anything. I think Taycan 4S+ would do it in 9 hours and 30 minutes, since it can probably do around 230 miles on highway at highway speed as test with Turbo proved (and it was in winter) and 80% takes 20 minutes than he will need only like 3 stops, max 4 stops, but shorter ones, but Model S LR will strugle at charging, I think Model S Ravel LR can do it maybe 10 minutes under 10 hours, but Taycan 4S+ will beat it.

When you clame consistency of charging speed for Tesla you have to distinguish the consistency on Tesla supercharging network from using other CCS networks. I remember when you got your Model 3 in the very beginning you complained about your Tesla Model 3 having inconsistent and problematic while having charging sessions on Ionity network.
@bjornnyland
@bjornnyland 4 года назад
You don't understand. Let me explain. In the old days, Model 3 also suffered from coldgate. When MC Hammer was new, it didn't preheat the battery before supercharging. After some updates, Tesla fixed that and since then it has been working fine.

Bjorn, if you have noticed, the MG ZS EV has a big radiator in the front and wide open guiles similar to an ICE car. That means: 1. the car will cool a lot faster than other EV without the massive cooling system 2. It will do well in Hot climate, better ability to cool down. 3. But will do bad in cold weather, since it wont be able to keep warmed up. That's probably also a reason why the Ioniq and Leaf dont sell well in Thailand, since they have less cooling?
@bjornnyland
@bjornnyland 4 года назад
The big grille has nothing to do with battery cooling down. The reason why the battery cools down is probably due to lack of battery insulation (which Tesla has).

About the 12 V battery: Obviously ca. 1 V/bar on the meter. When in Ready the meter goes up to 14 V (appr. 14.3 in reality) and the battery charges. At 41:11 the high voltage system is off (like pressing Ready button without brake) and the 12V battery gets runned down quickly as everything incl. BMS (main battery level is also shown) is active. When you charge the car the BMS etc. has to be running, perhaps for several hours. So, to not overcharge the 12 V battery the 12 V circuit must be fed from the DC-DC converter but at appr. 13.6 V or so. At 39:28 you have 5 bars (meaning 13-13.9 V or so) while charging the main battery which looks perfectly fine to me. I don't think there is anything wrong with the 12 V system. On my 2020 Ioniq I did measure the 12 V battery after several hours of slow charging in my garage and got 13.6 V. I can also read main battery charge % just by pressing the Ready button twice without braking so BMS is on without the main battery connected. Ioniq and MG seems to work pretty much the same way. I also believe those who run their 12 V battery down are perhaps listening to radio or fiddling with the menus without having the car in full Ready Mode. Of course there could also be a computer error that prohibit it's power down or similar.

You don't know the full story. In Thailand when I was charging at 50 kW and we had aircon on, after about 30 minutes, the infotainment screen went black. The 12 V was drained low.
@MBBHD
@MBBHD 4 года назад
@@bjornnyland You should get a 12 V meter and measure at the battery in Thailand! Compressor runs on high voltage supply and fan on 12 V. Even if the DC-DC feeds only 13.6 V there should be just as much current available as when it feeds 14.3 during normal driving. Weird... As long as the 12 V system is above appr. 12.8 V the battery should not discharge and at least remain idle in the circuit. I know what I'm doing around 12 V batteries but I'm still a bit worried what my Ioniq is up to sometimes. I drive it daily but have actually seen the blue blink at the windscreen indicating it is doing the extra charging while being parked to avoid battery drainage. Should not happen... Battery was a bit low when I first got it new (12.2 V) but later it measured 12.5 like it should if just left overnight.
