The 2023 MG4 electric hatch has been named the surprise winner of 2023 carsales Car of the Year, proudly presented by Bingle.
While the cheap and cheerful, range-opening MG4 Excite 51kWh didn’t win our 2023 Best Electric Car award earlier this year, the new battery-electric hatchback range has since been joined by far more compelling Essence 64kWh and Long Range 77kWh variants.
And although it remains one of Australia’s most inexpensive EVs with a starting price of less than $40,000, the MG4 range will soon be topped by the 320kW XPOWER flagship for under $60,000.
Naturally, therefore, the MG4 is a standout performer in terms of cost of ownership, which accounts for 50 per cent of COTY assessment, but it also attracted more judges’ votes than any other finalist when evaluated against key criteria including safety, innovation and technology, practicality and presentation, and driving performance.
Indeed, the rear-wheel drive MG4 line-up is not just affordable, safe, high-tech and practical; MG’s first dedicated electric car is also fun to drive, well presented and delivers a solid driving range. Congratulations, MG.

I’ve had an MG4 Essence 64 since the end of August. Great build quality, ride and handling. Nothing comes close for the money.

We bought the Excite 64 as the runabout but after taking it for a freeway trip through the hills we want to get a second. Maybe like what you bought

@@jasonrhl Another car site has been long term testing an Excite 64 and says, "...And it occasionally loses charge when parked overnight - sometimes up to five per cent - which I wasn’t expecting...". Just wondering, are you experiencing a similar problem? If so, if one was to leave the EV parked over a few days without usage, does the battery drain itself out, lets say 20%?? over a week? I do contemplate buying an EV, but there are times when I may not go for a drive for about 3 weeks. With an ICE car, if there is 60 litres in the tank, then in 3 weeks time there will still be 60 litres. I am currently averaging less than 3,000km per year over 14 years, and that includes a 4,500km trip from Melbourne to Perth.

I've had my MG4 Excite for less than a month but already it lives up to its promise. Zippy around town, comfortable on longer drives and the shorter range battery wasn't a drama at all for the 1500km road trip I just took it on.

The MG warranty appears to be a good one and thereby indicates faith in their product. Whilst the BYD warranty is very dubious, with more holes than Swiss cheese, with only providing 3 yrs/60,000 km for it's infotainment system.

The MG4 is a deserving winner and breaks new ground for EVs at this affordable price point. It is especially appealing to people like me who don’t want to spend more than $50k on a new car but still want space, comfort, technology, driving enjoyment and low running costs. Congratulations and well done MG! Having said that, we recently ordered a new family car and didn’t choose the MG4. We found it a little too spartan for rear seat passengers. We went with the Hyundai Kona Premium Hybrid instead as it offered a bit more comfort and amenities for the whole family and is still priced affordably. The over-zealous safety nannies are a little off-putting, but as an overall package it suited our needs better.

I have had my MG4 Essence for a month now and really enjoy driving it, and most of the charge I put in comes from my smart charger and solar panels, makes for fun cheap motoring. I think the Kona is also a great car, but most of the time there's just 3 or less of us in the MG4. I wanted to see if a low cost EV would be any good as my first EV, before getting something else 4 years time when I will sell it with 3 years of warranty still left on the car

Such a shame only the Excite 51 comes with a LFP battery (safer and good to charge to 100% all the time) but the higher models come with NMC batteries😢

It won easily. It came mid-field in terms of the cost-of-ownership scores (50 per cent of the score) but eight of the 10 judges had it first and the other two second.

I agree with all of that, we bought one and it's an excellent car to drive and EXTREMELY efficient. Costs me $18 to get 350KM into it if I'm filling up from the grid. Usually we have solar to charge most of it, so I'm not worried about winter. Ev's also have a range of rebates as well, and they currently have excellent resale value.

RWD EVs make sense due to their torque so as you accelerate more weight pressure gives RWD more traction, speed and control vs FWD

But the system software do not Work in practical. the power up system is scrap, also most of the logic is looonngggg way from normal cars.. Just simpel things. exp. a rainy day you have used the wipers, next time you go to you MG4 and open the door.. in that moment the wiper make a automatic wipe, and the doorpanel is full of water incl. you self.. WHY, WHY does that automatic not just wait to you press the break pedal (the power on). there is lot more faults that give NO sense. also if you want to preheat the cabine, the car turn front and back light on.. whats the point you are not driving, maybe the logic is the naboes neet to know you are preparing to drive. the light use unneassary power for NO use at all.
