Another upgrade for the MG4. I added some hydraulic bonnet struts to make it easier to open the bonnet for a future Frunk install. A quick and simple job as use existing holes to fix to the bonnet and inner wings, there's even a handy strip of metal included to help position the bonnet nuts.
Ordered from AliExpress on the 25th of January and arrived on the 15th of February.

Cool. Hope the engineers and technicians at MG are watching this video to add this feature in a possible facelift for MG4. That would be the best reward for the free RU-vid community effort for making this car nicer, more comfortable and safer.

All the way the video I was thinking "but why" a frunk answers that though, have you got a solution for that or are you hoping someone develops an aftermarket solution?

Makes it easier when topping up fluids too especially in wind and rainy weather. But yes I will wait as a couple of Frunk designs are going to be ready next month apparently, if not I will build something myself. Watch this space as they say.

It’s more secure with both sides supported especially in windy weather. Also keeps the bonnet straight when opening and closing avoiding any misalignment.

Why would one need this? Would like to have a set for the trunk.

As in the description: makes it easier to open the bonnet for a future frunk install. More convenient when topping up with washer fluid and cleaning the panels under the bonnet, just nicer and more premium feeling in general. It’s standard on most ‘luxury’ brands

Hydraulic strut is the older general term used in the UK when referring to these, the US uses gas struts. I’m old school so tend to use ‘hydraulic strut’ when looking for or talking about them

I have purchased the struts, led interior bulbs and mudflaps while still waiting for my car to be delivered. So I'm delighted to have found your video. Although I am confident about carrying out the work it's helpful to see it being done on video. I am interested to know your opinion on whether both struts are needed to hold up the bonnet?. I noticed you already had one strut holding it up while you worked on fitting the second one. My current car (Mondeo) came with one strut from factory (OE)

Pleased the video helps. I would recommend fitting two as it helps keep the bonnet inline better when opening and closing, equal amount of pressure either side wherever you push the bonnet down from also. Better in the wind too.

@@alankemp1970 Many thanks. I have subscribed and am looking forward to your FRUNK project. When I take delivery I will also be looking under the bonnet for ideas on using the space even if its only to house cables etc

@@samkeegan2313 There are a couple of companies developing a frunk that are supposed to be available the end of the month so I will see what they are like, I may still go ahead and build something myself though while I’m waiting. I’m in the middle of upgrading the speakers at the moment and adding sound deadening in the doors etc so will post a video when finished.

Me too, for some reason MG doesn’t like the idea of a frunk - there is a huge amount of empty space under the bonnet of an MG ZS EV that they did nothing with, and I’m going to be getting an MG4 later this year so am very interested to see whether an aftermarket frunk can be fitted. I subscribed so I can see what other great mods can be added to this vehicle.

Hi Alan, I've just ordered my MG4 Trophy, I can't wait for it to be built. Your Strut Upgrate looks great. The Audi A3 and Mercedes A180 both only have one Strut for the Bonnet. Does the single strut have the strength to lift the Bonnet?

Hi, yes it will lift ok with one strut, having two means you always have a nice straight lift and close and it keeps everything inline especially if windy. Equal pressure all round when opening or closing.

Does a type 2 cable fit on top of that plastic cover? So that you actually don't need a frunk, but squeeze the cable between the bonnet and the plastic piece? (maybe tighten the cable to the right upper "leg" of that plastic piece so that it doesn't fly around).

I’ve not checked, you would need to attach some Velcro straps to make sure it’s secure though as don’t want it falling and tangling up in the electronics underneath. The pocket on the back of the seat is a handy place to store the cable. I’ll try and remember to check the space available under the bonnet tomorrow.
