After you have tack welded the panel, make the welding seam in 1 shot, the start/stop motion is working against you. It's a pleasure to see you are using the traditional methods, keep up the good work 👍

You are right. I just told my colleague Seb who did this work, that I would have done the welding in one go. I still thought the work was good enough to be shown on youtube :-)

I had an MGC GT of that color. Very pretty. I couldn’t see what was wrong with the subject bonnet, but I do recall the aluminum bonnet was soft and prone to getting handprints from closing the hood in that area.

the yellow bonnet has nothing wrong. I just use it to have a flexible shape pattern in order to repair another one

Wow! Two MGC’s. Sorry I misunderstood. If I recall correctly that yellow color is Pale Primrose. Excellent work!

I have tried Wray Schelins flexible shape pattern method, and it does work well. However…. If you had made gauges of the bonnet section that indexed with the shape pattern, it’s so much better. You missed out the gauges. I’d encourage you to try next time. It’s so much better. The flexible shape pattern, by itself, only helps with area value. It does not help with the arrangement or contours of the panel. This is why you also need the gauges.

Please, do you claim to teach me the difference between shape and form? :-D we have dozens of gauges. just because you don't see it on this video doesn't mean we don't use it. So we don't "missed out the gauges" and I can tell you that gauges are not better than FSP, it's complementary.

@@slgclassiccars4098 I am saying that the flexible shape pattern method works best, when encorporated with contour gauges made at the same time as the flexible pattern. And the gauges indexed to lines drawn on the pattern.

I’m curious why some restorers still choose gas welding to fusion seam weld, when Tig welding achieves the same goal but with a much smaller heat affected zone, and therefore less shrinkage, and I would say, a far superior surface quality after welding. Is it just a case of it being an enjoyable method?
@slgclassiccars4098
@slgclassiccars4098 2 года назад
Because I use both and in this case gas weld gives better results. Heat affected zone is wider but easier to stretch back. I do not agree with you about the superior surface quality for having compared the 2 many times. for other applications the tig is better
@BognorYouthU13
@BognorYouthU13 2 года назад
@@slgclassiccars4098 ok. But the surface surrounding your gas weld looks faceted through hammering.
@asantos84

No better quality with tig, never. Gas welding is a better weld and more versatile to work with.
