Remember YongYea's endless fucking shilling of this game? God damn I have never regretted being subscribed to someone so much ADDENDUM: The biggest fucking problem with The Phantom Pain is that the entire story doesn't matter in the series canon. Everything that actually matters happens off-screen, either in a cassette tape or is implied in the ending. Hell, the only things that actually happen are: 1. Zero becomes a vegetable because he's poisoned by Skullface. 2. Big Boss creates Outer Heaven behind everyone's back. It's the biggest middle finder Kojima could've given to his fanbase. "You want the missing piece? Well fuck you here's the story of some other asshole whose actions make no difference at all, spend 100 hours discovering that shit". Everyone who draws parallels between TPP and MGS2 is a tool. On that note... Why does Ishmael have no facial hair?
@DickieDangling
@DickieDangling 8 лет назад
I readjusted my opinion of him when I found out he was going to the boot camp prior to release, and then I adjusted my opinion even more when he rated the game so highly, not because I didn't agree with his opinion, but because events like that automatically make his opinion more biased, even if only by a little.
@DickieDangling

Oh, and let's not forget that he strawmanned every negative opinion of TPP's story by writing them off as "not getting it". Classy.

Hate to tell you this but Kojima has always put his meta-narrative first. MGS1 was all about genetic determination, MGS2 was a social commentary on the dangers of the information age and the proliferation of useless, trivial information which in a digital age can never fade away as it should in nature (natural evolution versus artificial preservation), MGS3 was about the lies propagated by governments-history written by victors (3 was the most boring to me as it has the most literal narrative), MGS4 was about the military industrial complex and American imperialism. Kojima has clearly been frustrated by fans that take Metal Gear so literally (the ending to MGS2 says "shut the fuck up about canon and take away the philosophical and deeper messages rather than dwell on fictional timelines and whether its "real" or not etc.).....he alluded to this again in MGS4 when Big Momma talked about her soldiers not needing a reason, they fight because its "cool" to them......i.e. gamers/Metal Gear fans that take the games literally and ignore the artist's deeper messaging (also the VR missions of MGS2 that Raiden refers to-breeding a generation of soldiers from videogames....that was Kojima saying to think and listen more to his deeper messaging rather than the literal canon of what terrorist do I need to kill)
@SaberRexZealot
@SaberRexZealot 8 лет назад
Thing is that MGSV was no where near as well-executed on a fundamental storytelling level as the other games; even considering Kojima's priority of subtext it falls completely short because of the missing pieces and the final ending coming completely out of left field (lazily ripping out the prologue and renaming it the last mission). That's not satisfying at all and inexcusable by what we know of the format. Even if that was what Kojima was intending, I still don't think it worked and that MGSV will not receive the delayed appreciation and relevancy that MGS2 got (that game nailed it).

I remember when I played Ground Zero's, I like many others said "If the Phantom Pain is filled with content like this, it will be one of the best games ever made." Ground Zeros gave off the impression that the main game would be multiple levels of a living breathing world which you could play and finish to your own play style, making a grand swan song to the series. What do we get instead? Fucking nothing. That's it, trailers showing things that never happen, outer heaven is large and empty, Afghanistan is empty, Africa is empty. This game is EMPTY. I remember when people complained about Red Dead Redemption saying for an open world game felt "empty" yet the Phantom Pain gives one third the content verses Red Dead Redemption and people bend over backwards to defend it! There is no excuse for this game to be like it was released with its massive budget of 80 million and eight years of development, no fucking reason at all.

Anybody else realize that MGSV's marketing was completely pointless? It kept promoting MGSV as the down fall of Big Boss.; thing is, he had already fell by Peace Walker. He has created his own warring nation state, built a nuclear weapon, recruited child soldiers, helped overthrow democratic forces in Nicaragua with communist rebels, and established his own set ideology
@SaberRexZealot
@SaberRexZealot 8 лет назад
Peace Walker is the real MGSV. People refuse to accept that it was a better, more complete game because of its lighter comic booky tone and simple gameplay. In actuality, Peace Walker was the perfect set-up for Big Boss' downfall and proxy war with Zero. It also gave us much more story and character interaction. MGSV has some utterly fantastic ideas (men becoming demons, bridging the gap from PW to MG1, re-introducing Psycho Mantis and Volgin, exploring Liquid more, expanding the Big Boss legend) but they all go fucking nowhere. At least Peace Walker resolved everything by the end. MGS5 was far too ambitious for its own good. The gameplay was amazing, but do we really need a massive, underpopulated and barren open world to tell this story. The game should've just been like a series of Ground Zeroes kind of missions. Kinda like Peace Walker but on a grander scale; likely would've saved money to focus on more important things like story.
@Pan_Z
@Pan_Z 8 лет назад
SaberRexZealot MGSV was far from ambitious. MGS1 and 2 tackled several themes just fine. While the gameplay of V was enjoyable, traversing the barren wasteland of a supposedly war raging land to complete "Destroy armored unit #8: wasn't. V fails in so many ways. Even complete characters, such as Quiet and Skullface, fail. Liquid's story is complete too thanks to the cut content blu-ray disc, and it makes Liquid's character make absolutely no sense. Btw, amazing idea for how MGSV should of been. They could have made the levels more detailed and complicated as well if they had done it that way.

"But Kojima made it intentionally bad because THE PHANTOM PAIN." Yeah, even I don't think Kojima is that bone-headed. I might be a bit irrational, but I have a small feeling that Kojima did do that though, not because he thought it was a good idea, but because of Konami. Maybe he planned for all this cool stuff, Konami told him it was too expensive, and he had to start cutting. Maybe Kojima's feeling some of that phantom pain too.

The "I'm already a demon" conversation is one of my favorites in the series. Just think about it in context. Kaz says: "Cipher sent us to hell, but we're going even deeper." (Meaning: Cipher gave us the means to start a private army that feeds off the misery of innocent people, and we may never truly redeem ourselves. However, we're going to continue this path they've set us on in order to destroy them, ensuring that it will never happen again.) Venom (as Big Boss) responds: "I know. I'm already a demon." (Meaning: I'm already evil. I might as well follow it throught to the end.) This point of that line is directly connected to this next one: "Just one thing, Kaz. This isn't about the past; we're fighting for the future." (Meaning: If we're going to continue indulging in our sins, we must remember that it's a means to secure a future without said sins.) Notice the similarity to MGS4: Killing to secure a future without war. An interesting thought.

I'm pretty convinced you either got so mad that you stopped watching the rest of the ending or you just stopped paying attention to it. The game doesn't end with Venom accepting what BB did to him. After Venom flips the tape over it's heavily implied that a lot of time has passed to the point where it's likely sometime soon before the events of the first Metal Gear. He walks over to the mirror and can no longer see himself in it, he only sees "Big Boss" and he sees "Big Boss" as the demon Venom feared he was becoming. I mean yeah it's pretty dumb how quickly it starts and finishes but this cutscene is 100% of Venom's character development. After seeing himself as Big Boss, Venom finally realizes that what Naked did to him was a really shitty thing and then as an overly symbolic way of abandoning Naked he punches "Big Boss" in the face, declaring himself the one true Big Boss. This is why Naked sends Solid Snake to Outer Heaven in Metal Gear, to kill Venom before he can further destroy Big Boss' meme. The Phantom Pain has a huge focus on showing rather than telling. Which is actually the reason Kojima gave for casting The Kief as Snake instead of Hayter. (Although it's more likely that Kojima realized that after MGS3 Hayter sounds like he's doing a parody of himself. I just wish that the rest of the 'story' of TPP wasn't completely irrelevant. Yes it's a dumb twist to patch up a plot hole that literally 0 (zero) people gave a fuck out. But the way it's presented it's genuinely beautiful.

Why would Big Boss trust Zero? He doesn't necessarily but he trusts OCELOT who is his main man and the plan they come up with BENEFITS him because his goal is establishing Outer Heaven - it helps establish how he's changed - he's no coward he's faced all sorts of shit before but now he's happy to USE a soldier of his own to deal with a threat that he could deal with but doesn't want to because he would rather establish Outer Heaven - which is all ABOUT protecting soldiers from being used. The hypocrisy of the man is brilliant

(Writing this comment before having watched the full critique, so forgive me if you cover this at another point) I think the twist of Venom being a body double could have been much better executed if it had been revealed at the end of Chapter 1, when Skullface is killed. And not revealed in the same way it just sort of comes out of left field in the final game, but revealed as a cryptic statement Skullface utters, alluding that he's not the legend he thinks he is. That could set Venom off on a bit of an investigation to find out the truth, and once he does, it would have been much more satisfying as a player to know you're playing an impersonator. All future cutscenes where Venom is revered as Big Boss, the audience would know he's not, and the cutscene would have a much greater layer of depth to them. Maybe in the plot, Venom could come to resent Big Boss, (who we know isn't THAT bad of a guy from past games,) and could set out to destroy his reputation by employing the child soldiers and committing war crimes, all to get back at the man who stole his identity. I dunno, I'm just throwing out ideas here. But ideas are what this plot was sadly too light on. Still love the game, I just wish the plot were more fully formed out.
@SaberRexZealot
@SaberRexZealot 8 лет назад
THRILLHO That sounds like a much more promising way to continue after Chapter 1. There's no buildup and I would've rather had the game set up all the things that're gonna happen up til MG1 instead of what we got. They're could've been a scene where Big Boss and Venom actually talk about this or we see how all the characters are impacted by preceding events. We'd have seen Huey drown himself, Ocelot killing Miller, Liquid and Psycho Mantis and the rest of FOXHOUND working together, and of course an unwinnable fight against Solid Snake as Venom to end the game. We get nothing from what the big twist offers other than implications.
@CtisGaming
@CtisGaming 6 лет назад
The game was cut too short. Kojima had said it was supposed to have 5 open worlds, we only got 2, 3 if we could the cut Liquid Snake island. Combine that with the padding in ch 2 + the poorly recycled reveal mission 51 and we have a game that ends on the twist that should've been in the middle of the game before we jump to Big Boss's perspective with the original FoxHound unit on Zanzibar.

So even Castlevania had a more dignified death than Metal Gear Solid? Still I always get mixed feelings about criticizing unfinished media (cough cough Angel Beats, Gallilei Donna, KOTR 2, Sonic 06), it's like criticizing a disabled person for not doing certain tasks as well as others. I do hope the apologists later come to the realization that the game was unfinished and needed more time on the oven, were they backstage shenanigans or is a 7+ year dev time going to become a necessity to prevent future incidents.

MGSV is my favorite Metal Gear game. I guess I just kind of accepted that the game wasn't story focused from the beginning. 4 was the end of the story. I feel the same way about MGS that I feel about Xenoblade X. The gameplay improvements are radically vertical, but basically it's at the cost of what makes the games iconic to people. The narrative twist in TPP was basically scouted out over a year before the game was released, and while the actual details I'm not so bothered about, what does bother me is the fact that the narrative in an MGS game is boring. Chapter 2 is essentially a mess of unrelated cutscenes triggering after missions that don't justify them at all, Episode 51 is just salt in the wound. The boss fight with Sehalenthropus is a good example, I don't think there's been a more generic final baddie sequence in MGS history. Xenoblade X is kinda similar. On its own, it's a fantastic game. Probably the worst game in the Xeno series and abandons the strengths of the series almost entirely to go in a different direction (coincidentally also open world). Main character is basically a lifeless body that differs any important information or decision to your party members, who all have the personality of a two-by-four despite the game existing in an extremely colorful universe. That being said, I was kind of prepared for MGSV to have a shitty story. MGS4 was Kojima desperately trying to tie up loose ends and the entire game suffered for it. MGSV being the game that wraps up everything just kind of felt like a doomed prospect from the start.

I don´t complain so much when I remember the fight of Kojima X Konami, the points that you show in the video, specially at the part where you don´t go back to the camp, or even revisiting missions, it really shows that the game suffered a budget loss within completion, and then he (Kojima) trowed some tapes at us to try to fill those losses. Really a shame, if you think the true potential of the game

After you hear the zero tapes, it seems to me, like the real Big Boss was never in a coma. Also, "Ishmael" is in great shape in the hospital scene. Doesn't look like a coma patient to me. I'm just saying there's more to it than what you show to me. Yes, the story is broken, and it seems to me that there is definitely missing story and the one we got is broken, but I do feel like the Big Boss and Venom switch is deeper than we think.

MGS5 story was a disappointment on many levels. Chopped up and blind Master Miller. I was looking forward to seeing AT LEAST the establishment of Foxhound by this point in the Metal Gear timeline with the real Big Boss, instead of this imposter and Diamond Dogs crap. No Frank Jeager with his friendship and influence on Solid Snake. Psycho Mantis was in his early 40's when he took on Solid Snake, how was he a baby in 1985? How does Solidus Snake REALLY fit into the Metal Gear time line? And mind you, MGS5 is set in 1985. The Gulf War was right around the corner. Solid Snake fought in that war as a teenager. It's time to really move things along with the world famous Big Boss and his private militia of bad boys, Foxhound, with all that they established and did before they became terrorists in the very first game that started it all on the Nintendo in the 80's. AND NOW, Metal Gear Survive, spiralling off into this zombie crap! When will we get to the point!? Did anyone else feel this way? Or does everybody forgive the sucky story, but more bullets?

Thank you very much for this critique. I agree with you on all of these points. I have enjoyed playing the MGS games over the past 10 years. MGS 1, 2, 3, 4, and PW were all masterpieces in my collection that I will continue to play in the future. But after finishing MGSV, I had this bad taste in my mouth. Underneath all the pretty graphics and new gameplay mechanics, MGSV has an empty, incoherent story. Venom doesn't even have a notable personality, he's just a mute for like 99% of the game. The switch from Naked Snake to Venom doesn't make sense to me. Anyways, I will probably never touch MGSV again. For now, I am going back to enjoy some Peace Walker.

i think the whole series has been more about seeing legends as ghosts that blindly follow their scenario instead of these utter badasses that hollywood has made for us. in every game there has been an undertone of never getting the full story then completing the mission to find out that you're actually the bad guy, you just didn't know it because "Its hard to tell what a sin is on the battlefield"

Did it ever explain why Miller hates Big Boss? All Big Boss did was run away from all his responsibilities and leave one of his men ,who was in a coma for 9 years, to do all his work

+Pan Z There's a conversation between Miller and Ocelot in post-credits, where Ocelot tell Miller that Venom isn't Big Boss. Miller feels betrayed and abandoned because Big Boss "ran off".

Pan Z Big Boss does a shit ton of terrible shit in the old MSX2 games including holding the world as hostage under the threat of nuclear war and employing child soldiers to further his causes. Miller has more reasons for calling Big Boss a monster than him being a coward.

You say that Venom doesn't become consumed by revenge...and yet here you are, making a 20 minute rant about Kojima making a game that's different from what you wanted. Ahab indeed. And yeah, Venom 100% was never supposed to be a character with an arc, he's a mirror. Successful? Maybe, maybe not, but clearly the intent.
@SuperSaiyanAl
@SuperSaiyanAl 8 лет назад
I get why you're annoyed with where Big Boss's character went, but tbqh, I feel like it's pretty consistent with the character's trajectory. What he's doing with Ahab is basically what the Patriots did with Raiden in MGS2. The fact that he's willing to employ the same methods as the people he's sworn to fight indicates how far he's fallen. You could argue, in fact, that this IS the point where Big Boss became an outright villain: He was willing to destroy the life of someone who fought by his side for years in order to further his own agenda. It was never going to be about going on killing sprees and becoming a demon; it was going to be about the extreme lengths he was willing to go to in his war against Cipher. You could argue that this makes his extreme loyalty to his men and magnanimity toward his enemies deeply hypocritical, and I think you'd be absolutely right--but that that is the point of the character's arc. It's what separates him from Solid Snake, the true hero of the franchise: Solid Snake wasn't a hypocrite. He preached, and practiced, philanthropy. And again, it's like poetry, sort of, they rhyme. re: not trusting Zero--he probably trusts Ocelot. And I get the impression that Zero's plan was just to alter Ahab's appearance, not his personality--he was probably counting on Ahab never waking up from his coma. The idea to turn Ahab into a mental doppelganger of Big Boss was probably Ocelot's. Anyway, I dig the video overall--I've enjoyed your more satirical stuff as well as your critical diatribes, and I'm glad to see more from your channel.

We as fans try to craft a universe around it, which was also a theme in the series, but ultimately i think the whole thing started as a point to be made through subliminal experience.

You know the story sucks when Metal Gears made in the 70s and 80s appear to be more technologically advanced than Metal Gears made in the 00s. Not to mention that there can't be Metal Gears before TX-55. It's an advanced weapon first of its kind. No Metal Gears before Metal Gear, Kojima! And Madnar is the one true inventor of Metal Gear.

I felt that idea-wise Kojima wanted to say that you (the Player) is Big Boss. And like many things in the game, it got shoved in your face in the worst possible way... With Metal Gear ending on MGSV, it's up to you, the player, to keep the character alive in your memories and even actions, to fight for what you believe in and all that self-help that japanese games enjoy trying to teach usl

I do not remember that accorodo for Kojima player has always been important, and I agree that apart from the mission 43 the player never sees the "demon" of Big Boss / Snake Venom but even he had to agree on the level of phantom to 'start this, however, is questionable, I conclude by saying that I disagree even on the characters they are not developed because unfortunately there is no chapter 3 (because of Konami and Kojima himself) and Kaz even I had my doubts all' beginning because it seems become the villain him but in chapter 2 is much better developed and frankly I surprised me

I pretty much agree with your analysis except for your criticism of Venom declaring himself a demon being wrong. No matter your interpretation of the word, whether you are using the modern Western Christian interpretation or the ancient Greek / Eastern interpretation, it is ultimately Venom's subjective designation given to himself. In other words we can't really tell him he's not a demon. Despite there being a strong argument both in meta narrative on soldiers in general, to character driven narrative exclusive to the MGS universe, In my opinion it's the weakest part of your analysis. Everything else is on point and well supported. Thanks for making the video.

Theres a huge disconnect between the themes in Ground Zeroes and what we get in Phantom Pain. I get the impression Konami either forced KojiPro to scrap pieces of the game and start over possibly multiple times, or Kojima made the decision deliberately. Combined with the over half-decade development cycle and we got a barebones yet confusing story to close MGS out for good.

I seriously think MGSV had potential to be one of, if not the, best game ever made if it was actually completed. I also think that Konami forced Kojima to tone down the story he was going to tell and the game obviously suffers from it. Either way, it's a depressing end to say the least.

haha you are not thinking outside of the box. The story makes perfect sense but only once you understand the reality of what is happening. Think. Things are not as they seem on the surface. You were not actually infiltrating camp omega. You were not actually in Afghanistan. You were not actually in Africa.

there are cutscenes not in the game: the child soldiers being trained by a rogue coyote soldier, the prisoner in camp Omega get shot in the back as he walks away, and another scene where child soldiers walk up to the camera with a talk behind them. last is the one you mentioned. The nuclear trailer and I'm sure we al missed a 2sec clip in the trailers. AHHHH I hate your video! Mostly cause I agree with it!

I think you totally misinterpreted Boss' goal with making his body double a thing. Its not cowardice, and just a way to show his actions harder after peace Walker. It lines up with it. It's unnecessary thing to show how he'd be willing to do this, but PW is the same shit. And they're both bad in that same way that they hurt the end of MGS3. I do agree with a lot of the criticism for this game, but it's almost all expectations, this is just Peace Walker 2:Electric Boogaloo (but it plays rlygud). The entire game also lacks a lot of story and pacing, and I think the twist gets some undue attention. Also I appreciate that you emphasized obvious mismanagement of budget by Kojima over like 7 years. Overall MGSV>PW>MGS4
@matilyn_rf

I also think you missed the point where Venom sees himself as Demon Snake even if you never kill anyone but that quarantine mission. He doesn't have to become a demon, just because trailers teased it. It's just people wanting a more fulfilling story and latching onto the original promise.

Sorry but the guy making this video doesn't get it at all. Like I have said before. If you believed Big Boss became a "villain" based off what you HEARD (but never actually saw) in MGS lore, you got DUPED by Cipher and you are the S3 plan. You're no different than people in the mgs universe believing that the Boss was a villain when in actuality, she was an incredible, self sacrificing hero. How is Big Boss a "coward" if he is creating a military nation and putting his ass on the line against Cipher by creating Zanzibar Land? You think creating Zanzibar land is easy as fuck and he doesn't have to get into gun battles and wars just to create that nation the same way you are creating Outer Heaven/Diamond Dogs? You're naive and delusional if you think Big Boss is creating Zanzibar while chilling in a tropical island. Just because you're not seeing Big Boss do something, doesn't mean he isn't. Your final conclusions just seem real bitter because you didn't get what you wanted, which is that Big Boss was supposed to be a villain.

+2Good2BeTrue45 I agree with you partially, MGS4 made it quite clear that Solid was used against Big Boss, this however has no effect on MGS5 being shit story-wise, it's incomplete, full of unnecessary retconning and often senseless.

Great video, thank you. I will never forgive those who are responsible for the clusterfuck MGS V became. I just KNOW this was supposed to be something else entirely. At least we have the previous games and their arc to go back to and love and enjoy though. That being said? The gameplay in MGS V is out of this world, that part they hit out of the park. But it doesn't forgive the splattered shit stain on the wall which is MGS V's narrative.

Venom is also a failure as a character and a player vessel. He is his own character outside of this story, as he has a place in this world. He does things the player wouldn't do, such as run Outer Heaven during the events of MGS1. He also excepts the role of Big Boss, which is something the player doesn't want to do either. As a character, he's a bland dope that passively agrees to everything, and somehow has all the memories of the real Big Boss, even Big Boss' most private moments that no amount of nanomachines or whatever could replicate. He feels guilt about not saving Paz, but the player wasn't to depressed when Paz died as she still wasn't a great person. Somehow, this random medic has the same CQC and combat abilities as the really Big Boss. MGSV: Venom in the medi-nope, now he's a player vessa- nope, now he's the medic agai- nope, player ve- med,-vessal

Jesus this guys dense - "kaz I'm already a demon" refers to the fact that the real Big Boss is Already a demon! It happened in PW. All I get from this video is that the guy just utterly missed the point in every sense of the word. Why do you think a random MSF soldier was used as a player avatar? Because they, like the player, fail to see that Big Boss is already a villain. They see him in rose tinted glasses just the like the player. They worship him, like the player. Only through being used and manipulated by him can they see the truth. And the saddest part? Venom was doing good, he was doing things differently to he real Big Boss. Big Boss used MG as a weapon in PW - Venom doesn't - he uses it as a symbol. Big Boss loads a nuke on MG - Venom doesn't, on the contrary he seeks nuke disarmament. Big Boss is cool with recruiting child soldiers? Venom doesn't, he seems to rehabilitate them. But then when the real Big Boss makes himself known Venom bucks and agrees to be Big Boss the under the real one and becomes a 'Demon' in the process because the real Big Boss is just that - a demon.

Also, on Venom has no arc, that's not true. You could say that Venom and Kaz interrupted Outer Heaven so much that Big Boss sent Solid to Venom because he knew that because Solid is a clone of Big Boss, he would most likely succeed in his mission to kill Venom. And his emotions are judged by his actions, facial and body expressions and tone of voice, not words. ALSO, Venom is the true son of the Boss. She wanted peace, and Venom also wanted piece by getting rid of nukes, which would go against Big Boss entirely(one of the reasons he could have purposefully sent Solid to Venom) but that is what the Boss wanted. For the world to become one and true peace.

That SHOULD answer all of your questions! Any more questions, send my way. Also, the reason he built MG.....I don't know. So, to your credit, you could be right, and Venom could be evil. But that is not how I interpret Venom's story.
