Further reaction to the Arraez trade and what that means moving forward for the Miami Marlins.
Peter Bendix will look to make a lot of moves to re-stock the farm system, it's the same strategy that Jeter had, why should we trust him to deliver?

Peter, thanks for your diligent coverage. Your questions are fair. Followed this team since its inception. Miami is a big city/market that supports teams/owners who are serious, and act like they’re in a big market. Past five years the Heat are top-five in fan attendance. Meanwhile Miami has the worst all time winning percentage of all active teams and we could look forward to never growing attached to quality players. There’s a reason why Marlins are the least valued team in MLB per Forbes
@gumball3D
@gumball3D Месяц назад
Even though this team beat mine in the 2003 WS, I feel bad for the fan base knowing how difficult it is to contend in the NLE with a small market payroll and bad ownership during most of the team's history.

You mentioned that the success of a rebuild is linked to a two step process of: (1) "identifying" talent and (2) "developing" talent. I'd add one more step which is (3) "retaining" talent. I'm hopeful that Bendix, et al., is successful at those first two steps but I have zero faith that ownership will allow for the final step (retention). Our pattern is to develop young players and then trade them off to a deep pocket teams (e.g., Yankees) once they become good (and expensive).
@thomasjoseph3488
@thomasjoseph3488 Месяц назад
True, but this strategy is essentially an opportunity game, that is, aligning affordable talent within windows of opportunity.

Pratt. Great observation. How many rebuilts do we need to be a part of? Luis, was someone we could build of. There are great players we could have build of. If the owner cannot afford the team sell it. Or open it up for more investments
@thomasjoseph3488
@thomasjoseph3488 Месяц назад
You said it - there's no guarantee - it's always a crapshoot. Both sides. Injuries can't be predicted (except for Chisholm and Puk). I expect significant results year-to-year.
@thomasjoseph3488
@thomasjoseph3488 Месяц назад
You also exactly tied the strategy with a strong developmental system (and sharp front office). These two parts are bookends, so proceeding with the farm revamp is a prerequisite. As a segue, even teams like the Astros had to revamp and suffer for a bit. No matter the past, these things don't fix themselves. We must start the process - no option.

Thank you for a spot on evaluation of Luis Arraez as a player. Growing weary of simpletons who like to crap on his value because he "only" hit 10 home runs last year and does not have a Gold Glove. Last year he became the only Marlin to ever hit for the cycle; an All-Star starter for the NL; and generated a BA of over .400 for a good portion of the season. He's a 2x All-Star, 2X Batting Champion; and 2X Silver Slugger. He's only 27 and demonstrates top notch competitiveness & leadership on the field. It's indisputable that the list of players over the past decade who draw frequent comparisons to Tony Gwynn is a very short one. Yet some of the "fans" are now calling him over-rated and insist on claiming he was undesirable to other teams.

Arraez talents were going to be wasted on the Marlins, like Trout with the Angels. This trade was at minimum very good, potentially excellent. I believe it will look extremely lopsided in four years
@zenman1001
@zenman1001 Месяц назад
@@ashevillecomics637 We can agree on one thing. Arraez's talents would be wasted on the Marlins. Unfortunately, the same thing applies to every other player & coach on this team.
@ashevillecomics637
@ashevillecomics637 Месяц назад
@@zenman1001 For now that does seem to be the case, however I can tell you that this trade, the first of what I believe will be many, was very Moneyballesque player wise. High on base guys, lots of potential. I've been watching Martorella for a couple of years, and to a lesser extent Marsee. Apparently neither projects with as much upside as Head. At the moment Head doesn't have many pro stats to judge his talents, but he batted nearly .500 in high school

I am hopeful that Peter Bendix will build a great farm system which may lead to a perennial contending Marlins team. By then, will Bruce Sherman still own the team, or will you have a Mets type owner with deep pockets?
@ashevillecomics637

I firmly believe this is exactly what will happen, and I truly hope that the team is sold in that time to someone who wants to win and is willing to spend when necessary.

It typically makes more sense to wait on rebuilding trades until we are closer to the deadline. Teams that are in the playoff hunt at that point in the season will be more desperate to acquire the remaining piece or two they feel they need to put them over the top. Letting it go very close to the deadline entails some risk, but it is when the Marlins will have the best leverage for securing the greatest return (especially if a multi-team competition sprouts up for a particular player).
@aaronchapman3

I think the only MLB team fan base that has it worse than Miami is Oakland. The A's don't sign anybody either and the team is currently in a lame duck status as they slowly move out of town, technically that seems worse than the Marlins situation in my opinion
@ashevillecomics637
@ashevillecomics637 Месяц назад
The As are a .500 team, and were far and away a better front office team than the Marlins. That changes with the arrival of Bendix, who will turn this team around in short order.

Miami has already traded with San Diego but if Jazz and Luzardo have to go, I want to see Ethan Salas as the return.

The Padres think too much of Salas to let him go for Jazz, who has mostly been a disappointment in comparison to the expectations.

Incorrect. Look at Theo Epstein. Turned around the Boston Red Sox, winning two titles, then goes to the Cubs and does it again. Bendix is a baseball guy in the same vein. The Marlins will be a playoff team within 4 years. The trade the other day was potentially excellent for the Marlins, and showed me they are on the right track. Now time to dump Chisholm, Bell and anyone else with value, for some top prospects.

Bruce Sherman is an owner who is content with, and prefers to run a stripped down team that makes tens of millions from the league luxury tax. If the MLB were operated like the English Football League, the Marlins would be a AA team at best. The Marlins used to at least be a team that could develop incredible hitters in their own system. Now? They not only cannot draft or develop decent hitters, but the great pitching prospects they manage to draft, they destroy with poor development. Derek Jeter is a winner, Bruce Sherman is not.

its different because they are only focused on analytics...this is an unhealthy way to approach rebuilding a baseball team. You need a mixture of analytics and also the human aspect. Not everything can be measured in numbers and data points.
