Miami Police VLOG: SWAT School Tryouts 

No lie getting in shape while full time officer preping to be swat now that’s dedication

Looks like a painfully challenging process, but well worth it once you get in. I can only imagine the awesome training you receive and the life long brothers you gain. Be safe guys.

*Drops SWAT candidates into the pool* Instructor: "You ready?" All candidates: "Yes" Instructor: "Release the alligators!"

as a former army infantryman, im watching this first half of this assessment and im like "meh, doesnt seem TOO difficult"....once they hit the gym and he said "42 pushups in 1 minute", I instantly flip flopped as the Army PT test consist of 42 pushups in double that time. Not only that, but the cadre all throwing a fist under the candidate to insure hes even doing a proper push up also shows how good of an assessment this is. So when they said this is one of the most toughest SWAT schools to get into, I certainly believe that. You most certainly have to come to this assessment prepared both physically and mentally. Their mentality on the "attention to detail" is excellent. So much as not racking back the shotgun when requested to, on an exercise that seemed to have quite a bit of instructions to be done quickly and within a certain timeframe is great. That definitely will simulate going through the motions of a drill under stress. Being phsyically fatigued AND also needing to maintain all the proper instructions given and preform them. I like that. Preforming the wall climb NOT to prove you can climb a wall, but to show you can follow direct instructions also very good. Then after that, they have to take their duty pistol, fatigued as shit, and fire effectively at 25 yards. Which isnt easy even during a regular, relaxed, range day with iron sights. This is definitely weeding out the weak from the best.

All these people commenting about how they could easily pass the tryouts are probably the ones that would fail.

Plus, I have learned a lot of stuff about being a police officer and I also love your drive alongs with other police officers. Can you do more drive alongs?

I graduated City of Miami SWAT school back in 1989. Lt Shepard, Sgt Downey...I remember you guys. I think I was the only Federal Officer to graduate, up to that time.

I'm surprised there were no DQ's off the high dive. "According to my protractor, you were off by .03526 millimeters on your landing angle." 😂😂😂 I most definitely understand attention to detail, but a DQ on a climbing wall?

Some people might think these tests aren't that difficult, but I've had to complete the firefighter CPAT for the past several years and while it looks like an easy test, it's rather strenuous.

Interesting to see the different approaches between SWAT schools and countries. For instance, in France, the GIGN is completely different - although that's normal because it's a branch of the Gendarmerie which is itself a branch of the military forces, so the GIGN occupy the role of elite SWAT and special ops for hostage rescue. But it's interesting to see different philosophies. For instance, in GIGN training you're given as many chances as you can take to complete a task as long as you don't break down to the point where you could harm your health seriously, at which point you are forced to quit. They tell slower candidates that they can quit at any moment repeatedly. But you have to serve 5 years as a gendarme before you can try out. Also, 7 people have been killed so far in the training... yes, they train with real bullets... I know, that is crazy. Anyway, this is pretty impressive for a try out. Especially the gym portion - 25 pounds over your bodyweight pull-ups are insane! I liked the fast pace and the zero tolerance policy. Also the fact that the candidate we're all perfectly aware of the requirements and all ready. Too many times candidate who are not ready waste instructors' time, especially in the army.

I did a mock selection process with the guys at 5th Special Forces Group- it was such a challenging process. The Q course kicked my ass something fierce. It was an overall fun experience and 1st Sgt M is a freaking rockstar! This looks like fun. Imagine getting paid to do this for a living?

It seems that you guys have things allot different than we have here in Finland. To become a police officer here demands 2,5 years of training and tryouts are hard. To become Swat member (here it's called Bear Squad)you need to pass tests and 1 year extra training. Our Bear Squad operates with Finnish Border Guard and army.

This is pretty typical of some combat PT in the army but in this they include all these small steps that require attention to detail. Not to mention, all of these events are basically back to back. These might look somewhat difficult, but back to back makes these much harder than they look. That being said, If you have ever been to Army Ranger or Army Special Forces selection, you could pass this pretty easily.
