The words were written by the actor Jacob Jacobs and the melody composed by Alexander Olshanetsky, who wrote scores for plays and operettas in the vibrant Yiddish theater world on New York's Second Avenue. The song was written originally in 1932 for the play Ghetto Song (Yiddish). The song became famous in New York, and in 1935 appeared in a Polish score in Poland. Adam Aston and Tadeusz Faliszewski were performed this "tango sentymentalne".
In Warsaw ghetto, Władysław Szlengel put new, moving lyrics to this song - Warszawo ma...My Warsaw.
After the war, Polish poet and songwriter Agnieszka Osiecka wrote new lyrics to this Jewish shlagier.
