Song lyrics:
Opa, opa, bayla, bayla,
en la boda stamos,
tu sos noviya i yo noviyo,
tu sos mi espoza.
Opa, opa, bayla, bayla,
ven i baylaremos,
bayla, bayla, la mi noviya,
in una mos uniremos.
Opa, opa, bayla, bayla,
mi noviya ermoza,
mundo entero ke s’alegra,
es la muestra boda.

It's very sad that so much of this music has been lost or relegated to specialists. So beautiful

The word "baylar" means "to dance" in Ladino, so the song title sounds like "dance, dance" though.

Andre welcome back to us your family.I was born the only child of Sephardi jewish Holocaust survivors from Salonika/Thessaloniki in Greece that had been in the Ottoman Empire before 1912.I now am in London,England where here I have lived for some years.But spent my happiest years living in Israel.

Were they from Ottoman Empire? Clothing and music sounds like music from Istanbul….
@AgueroNain
@AgueroNain 25 дней назад
No, music is traditionally from Sephardic Spain, Portugal, Morocco where Sephardim lived for centuries.

@LeylaBelgium, I don’t know the history behind this specific song, but it’s very likely. Many sefardim settled in the Ottoman Empire after the expulsion from Spain. Isaac and Yasmin Levy are examples of this specific heritage.

No. 1492 ran out by the catholics and Portugal. Speak Landino. Escaped to middle east settled in Yemen, Morocco etc. Note the Spanish word in song novia and bylar! U western pple know nothing about us Jews. We are Yemen, Ottoman, Moroccan, Persian, Armenian, Iraqi, Ethiopian, middle east aka Mizarachi Jews. European Jews are light skinned from Russia, Poland, etc called Ashkenazim/Ashkenazi Jews. Sefaradi Jews are from Spain and Portugal and that region escape to Ottoman empire/Turkey etc. We speak Landino and some speak Yiddish and others speak Arabic and Hebrew Hebrew. All of speak Hebrew regardless and believe in One G-d and One Torah. We just have different minhagim. Dress different according to region. But, us observant Jews worldwide us woman cover our heads. There's Jews in the Balkan and Caucasus region but not light skinned due to travel from middle east through the silk road trade route. There's Jewish Kurds and Bucharian Jews too.
