This is another "mic'd up drive" video where I simply rig up several microphones and cameras, and take a car for a scenic drive to capture the sound and ambience of the driving experience. This one is a more mellow, relaxed cruise through Santa Barbara and Montecito, California, in my fully restored 1968 Mercury Cougar, with a 289 V8 and C4 automatic transmission. This is the upscale sibling of the Ford Mustang, so the sound is about the same as most classic small block V8 Ford products from this era.
I rigged up 3 Shure SM-11 mics and hardwired them to my Tascam DR-70D recorder to capture the engine and exhaust sounds. I actually had 4 hooked up but didn't use the interior mic due to various squeaks and rattles inside the car. There is some EQ applied to the audio to reduce tire noise and boost low frequencies, since these mics are intended for dialogue and don't pick up much bass. The results sound pretty true to life, I think. Check out my videos on recording car sounds if you want to learn more: • Recording Car Audio
This was shot on a 3 different days (one of them was to get the exterior front shots of the car, which matched up pretty well) in an attempt to get enough nice scenery and time it with the sunset. Let me know if you like this kind of thing, or if I should change the format! It turned out to be quite long, even after cutting out "boring" sections.
