I really enjoyed this. I just wanted to say we, at least in the U.S. part of the west, have a similar concept of regaining dignity through fighting. We have the following phrases that seem to match: "Not going down without a fight." "Go down kicking" Although, these are more along the lines of retaining some sense of dignity when faced with a losing battle instead of regaining it.

+Blue Goop "Go down kicking" isn't quite how I would describe the American mindset, seeing as America is the culturally, politically, economically and military dominant power of our times. It's not going down any time soon and neither is Israel btw. The existential fears of the Israelis today are - albeit somewhat understandable given their history of persecution in Europe for centuries - ultimately not based on reality.

+CerberusCheerleader Right. Micah said he had a hard time telling Americans about the concept of fighting to regain your dignity. I was only trying to offer something that would make that easier for him. The phrase "go down kicking" isn't an exact match since it means more to retain your dignity in the face of a losing battle, but I thought they were close enough to bridge the misunderstanding. I agree completely with you though. It's not how we see ourselves in the world.
