226L Aspen for $27 thats crazy. In Australia you'd pay about $200 for 113L aspen. Its cheaper to use cat litter for rats.

Where do u get the metal rack tops? Did u have an issue with mommas eating live babies with her first litter?

What are you using for the rail system that the tubs slide on?
@FenderFootprints
@FenderFootprints 3 года назад
The adult racks are completely constructed using 2”x3” lumber. The maternity rack uses aluminum c channel.

I see mixed things online with ages of breeding rats, so if I bought small-medium sized rats from the pet shop would they be able to breed ? I've seen some say rats can breed as early as 6wks and others say that they can't start until 12wks, that's a big difference!! What luck would I have from 2 F and 1 M rats from the pet store? Is there a risk of the potential of them coming from the same litter?
@FenderFootprints
@FenderFootprints 3 года назад
Medium rat would probably be best. Rats can breed at a younger age but then you can run into a lot of issues and you shorten the longevity of the rat. 1M and 2F would breed. However, you have to separate the male from the females when she gives birth-4wk(weaned) or he will kill them. The male can’t be left alone because rats are social animals. And then the females need about 3-4 weeks in between weaned and mating again or you dramatically shorten their live span. It really doesn’t make sense to breed only 2 rats.

I would really love to start breeding rats as pets, and I am in the process of making a bunch of bin cages. I am an experienced pet rat owner. Where should I start?.
@FenderFootprints
@FenderFootprints 3 года назад
I primarily breed rats and mice for reptile food, but it’s pretty much the same. You will need to decide what kind of caging you want. If breeding for pets, I wouldn’t recommend my setup. I would go with wire caging or something from your local pet store. You will need three cages for females. I would do 2-3 females per cage with one male rotating through every 3 weeks. You can refer to some of my other videos for more info about this. The big thing with breeding pets is the caging and socialization. Always have more cages than you need for grow ups once weaned at 4 weeks. Have toys and sleeping areas and so forth. Pet rats need to be interacted with starting at 3 days old and the interaction needs to gradually increase with age.

I love rats. And I love my snakes too. We foster large boas for a reptile sanctuary. I have recently decided I’m going to breed my own rats, because the rats I have been getting have been brutally killed! I of course don’t know for sure until I thaw them out, and find large gashes in their necks and broken skulls from what I assume is them being smashed. 😡😖 It kills me, and I can’t trust facilities anymore
@FenderFootprints
@FenderFootprints Год назад
That is aweful! The practices some people use is brutal. This was the reason we started raising our own as well. You know what they were fed and how they were treated because they had to serve their purpose. We use a CO2 tank to humanly euthanize.

Hi , may i know is the water system nozzle suitable for mice ? and another question , if the mice dont know how to use the nozzle , anyway to teach them ?
@FenderFootprints
@FenderFootprints 2 года назад
Yes, it is ok for mice. We will be building something for our mice in the future that will have the same system as our rats. Rats and mice are pretty smart. They figure it out. I would just monitor the water for a bit to make they are drinking.
@martinyong4153

@@FenderFootprints how is the nozzle work ? Izzit they have to bite the center metal for water right ? I tried to guild them to nozzle ,.but they just keep licking 😥
@FenderFootprints
@FenderFootprints 2 года назад
They don’t bite it but rather move the center piece from side to side. Rats are smart. It generally doesn’t take long for them to figure it out.
@khalidhussam859

How in the world do you pick them up without getting bitten? One of my females got me good last night. I've only had them for about a month and a half. (4 females 1 male) No babies yet. I'm breeding to feed my snakes. I believe 2 females are pregnant, but I'm not certain.
@FenderFootprints
@FenderFootprints Месяц назад
I am in my tubs almost daily. My rats know I’m there for checks, food, and treats. All my mother rats will bite if they have babies. It’s a protection instinct. If I need to move them, I quickly and gently grab them from behind and under the arms. Most times I let them walk from tub to tub and then move the babies.

Is it better to rotate the males at 2 or 3 weeks? Previous videos you have said 3 weeks but notice you said 2 in this video? Also how long did you have your mice before they bred? I have had my 2 colonies together for over 2 months and still no babies.
@FenderFootprints
@FenderFootprints 3 года назад
3 weeks at the most and 2 weeks minimum. When we don’t need as many rats, we will rotate every 3 weeks and when we need more we do 2 weeks. The male will usually impregnate females within the first 7-10 days.

I usually dont agree with these type of "rodent mill" breedin set ups, but I can see u arent like most of them! I see u actually carin for the health an kindness toward the animals. The only thing I seen that actually midly bothered me is when u accidently grabbed a young rat by the end of the tail which can cause deglovin, but I get babys are squirmy lol

I almost had a heart attack seeing her pick up that baby by the tail. Their tails are very sensitive, They are connected directly to the spine. If you pick up a rat by its tail, the wrong way. You will injure it. And they hate being picked up by the tail. I would not recommend it.

Ugh. Researching is a pain these days with outdated info, wrong info, etc. It’s a pain seeing an information video, and clicking on to watch 4 minutes into it, and the informational stuff hasn’t even begun. It is so annoying when animal folks merge their vlogs to their informational video. It’s frustrating and honestly you could’ve gained a lot of views, had your video been purely informative instead. Why not just separate the two videos? Ugh! It doesn’t gain you views or followers!! People just have to click off your video to find the informative videos instead!
