The WDR Big Band performs the program "Some Skunk Funk" together with Michael and Randy Brecker under the direction of Vince Mendoza. Other guest soloists include Jim Beard (piano), Will Lee (electric bass), Peter Erskine (drums) and Marcio Doctor (percussion). Michael Brecker composed the tune "Strap-Hangin'," and the arrangement for the WDR Big Band is by Vince Mendoza. Produced at the 24th "LEVERKUSENER JAZZTAGEN" (2003).
For the album the WDR BIG BAND received the GRAMMY for "Best Album by a Large Jazz Ensemble" in 2007 and Michael Brecker received the GRAMMY for Best Jazz Instrumental Solo for the tune of the same name "Some Skunk Funk".

MAN! MIKE! FUCK! just sheer brilliance on this gem. I have listened to ALOT of Brecker( MICHAEL) but HERE! he was technically FLAWLESS. in the zone and RANDY stepped it up . the poor man had to take a solo AFTER his BROTHER . DAMN. he did show up though.

I'm a sax player and worship Mike Brecker. His solo here is characteristic. But this is also a good example of how underappreciated Randy Brecker is. Is there a better trumpet player of his generation? These two are both just amazing.

It’s kind of like Alex Van Halen, an outstanding drummer, being overshadowed by his ridiculously brilliant and groundbreaking brother Eddie. Same with randy and mike. Randy is a phenomenal player who gets overshadowed by his brother who happens to be the greatest ever on his instrument.

Killing it. Wow, I love the brecker brothers! Had the opportunity to meet Randy in Utah at a Jazz festival. What a cool hang. Also got to sit behind them while they rehearsed. True artists! Hope to play with this much conviction and confidence one day.
