This might the most nuanced and fair vid discussing michael bay in any capacity that I've seen yet, as a lot of people tend to usually rage at him just because he's bay, and honestly I think this is one of your best vids on that alone. Inconsistent is honestly a good way to describe his output based on what I've seen of him. The part about you saying how his films have the makings of a much better movie than what they are is a point I cannot agree more enough. I think that is most applicable to the transformer films, Those films potentially could be really good due to what they add to the franchise they are apart of by bringing into some great ideas and a really unique take on the series, as well as having really good music by steve jablonsky. A lot of people like to bag on the designs, but I don't think they get enough credit for how inventive and stand out as far as mecha designs go. There are some bad ones, but the ones that are good are pretty rad and I feel that's most of them. Even though he's got his problems, The amount of effort that bay puts into his movies Is so insane I cannot help but respect in that regard. I would say my favorite of his is probably the rock as well, with Armageddon, bad boys 2, and maybe Transformers 1.

@@jp3813 Ebert's revew: There is an ugly scene in "Bad Boys II" that I want to tell you about. A cop played by Martin Lawrence is alarmed that his 15-year-old daughter is going out on her first date. We see the girl, pretty and hopeful in her new dress, being fussed over by her mother. The doorbell rings, and Lawrence opens it to confront her date, a nervous 15-year-old boy, tall and thin, neatly dressed. Marcus and his partner (Will Smith) intimidate the boy without mercy. He is threatened with the unspeakable if he lays a hand on the girl. They demand to know if he is a virgin. They slap him with the N-word. At one point a gun is pulled on him. "Ever had sex with a man?" Smith asks. Then with a leer: "Want to?" The boy is terrified. The needless cruelty of this scene took me out of the movie and into the minds of its makers. What were they thinking? Have they so lost touch with human nature that they think audiences will like this scene? Do they think it's funny? Did the actors voice any objections? It's the job of the producer to keep a film on track; did Jerry Bruckheimer notice anything distasteful? Or is it possible that everyone connected with the film has become so desensitized by the relentless cynical aggression of movies like this that the scene passed without comment? "Bad Boys II" is a bloated, unpleasant assembly-line extrusion in which there are a lot of chases and a lot of killings and explosions. Oh, it's all done with competent technique. Michael Bay, the director, is a master of this sort of thing, and his screenplay was labored over by at least four writers, although there is not an original idea in it. Even the villain is a bargain-basement ripoff of Al Pacino's great drug dealer in "Scarface." The plot, briefly, involves Smith and Lawrence as partners on the trail of a drug supplier who moves his money into Cuba. Gabrielle Union plays Lawrence's sister, a DEA agent from New York who has been seeing Smith. Joe Pantoliano is the obligatory police captain who constantly chews out the guys (and for once, a movie takes notice of the body count after a chase scene). No one in the movie is very interesting; our eyes glaze over during yet another bone-tired retread of chase scenes that we have seen over and over again. Occasionally there is variety, as when the boys shoot up a Ku Klux Klan rally; I dunno, maybe it's just me, but I don't see anything funny about burning crosses and guys in hoods. Do these images need to be given fresh circulation in 2003? The movie has a carelessness that shows a contempt for the audience. Consider a sequence in which two helicopters pursue a speedboat near Miami. I was never sure who was in the speedboat, or why it was fleeing. Maybe I missed something, but it didn't make much difference. Eventually the cops spray the boat with automatic weapons, the engine dies, and we hear "the boat is dead in the water." End of scene. As nearly as I can tell, the only reason this scene is in the movie is so that we can watch two helicopters chasing a speedboat. In a movie that is painfully long at 146 minutes, why is this scene taking up our time? The movie is so choppy in its nervous editing that a lot of the time we're simply watching senseless kinetic action. The chase scenes and shoot-outs are broken down into closeups that deny us any sense of the physical relationship of the actors or the strategy of a chase. It's all just movement. For example, after the action moves to the druglord's mansion in Cuba, the heroes commandeer his bright yellow Hummer for a getaway under fire. At one point it looked very much to me as if the Hummer drove into a pond, which would have brought an end to the chase, but no, seconds later it's back in the chase--no pond, no nothing. What happens next is kind of sickening. The Hummer speeds down a hillside entirely covered by the tarpaper shanties of poor people. Walls and roofs, doors and windows, dogs and chickens, corrugated iron and curtains, all fly into the air as the Hummer cuts a swath through this settlement. And I'm thinking, people live there. There's a quick mention that drug production takes place on the hillside, but still: Dozens of poor shantytown dwellers must have been killed, not that the movie notices. There was once a time when a hero would sacrifice his own life rather than injure innocent bystanders. No longer. The heroes of "Bad Boys II" are egotistical monsters, concerned only with their power, their one-liners, their weapons, their cars, their desires. I suppose I shouldn't be surprised that characters who wipe out a village can also make cruel jokes at the expense of a kid on his first date. Everybody involved in this project needs to do some community service.
@jp3813
@jp3813 4 года назад
@@shiranuiaensland1442 He didn't know that the hillside chase was a homage to, or a rip-off of, the same sequence in Jackie Chan's Police Story (1985). He generally likes JC's Hong Kong flicks and forgives any issues w/ the scripts due to how entertaining the action scenes are.

Bay was part of the 90s music video auteurs making a name for themselves at that time. David Fincher, Spike Jonze, Michael Bay, Tarsem Singh, etc. He was clearly the most fitting for noisy summer blockbuster fare. Just look at the type of bands he worked for, and his emphasis on hero poses with larger than life spectacle. He's made two very good films (13 Hours and The Rock). Transformers is solid entertainment for what it is. The Island is "mostly" good. The rest are essentially guilty pleasures for hardcore Bay fans (yes, many do exist).

tfcollect 26 Not simple. There’s something called constructive criticism. It makes life more interesting. And that’s the point of this video. He should just make “ACTION” movies, without forcing over the top crass dissonant humour into it. Did you watch the video? You don’t seem to have gotten the point. The problem is, along with the fun action, there is a large part that is just grating and annoying.

His Bad Boys movies have the same tone as his Transformers films, and while many people definitely don't dig that, for me it's his main appeal. I dig that his films go from reveling in their ridiculousness one moment while being really gritty and serious the next, and since I know what I'm getting, I don't really get tonal whiplash or anything. It's like a more extreme version of the old blockbuster formula that the MCU has repopularized, just filtered and amplified through Michael Bay's insane mind.

i could agree we could've done without the Reggie scene, or the one where they find themselves on TV (I usually hit fast forward at that part) but the rest of the movie, I mean, change the Hummer chase scene to a little less.....they are outrunning bad guys, probably not a short trip to the Navy base. That's like cutting the scene of 13 hours where the DS (ambo's security) are ambushed.....they are part of the story (I could have done without Tanto dancing with flashlights scene)

I do agree that with the smaller films he gets to flex his muscles and does a much better job narratively. But I remember watching his latest Transformers film pretty much in awe. Because the randomness in the choices was becoming so erratic, so flippant, so not giving a flying fudge about the viewer... That the result resembled a kind of motion picture version of a Jacksson Pollock painting. Daring me to find narrative threads and cohesive levels of plot. Making me doubt if it's cinematic brilliance or just blank white noise of random events. As is said in Apocalypse Now: - You find my methods to be unsound? - I don't see a method at all... sir... I mean, I kind of want to study it like a Neil Breen film. Like how Freud studied the mad scriblings of Joseph Schreiber's Memoirs of my Nervous Illness. It just fascinates me how a man who knows so well the narrative standards can ignore all lessons so thoroughly. I mean. It's downright arthouse. I'm starting to wonder if he actually is a closeted Cinematic Genius, or if he's just what he looks like... A frat boy with too much money to spend...

The reason The Rock is good is that the script is pretty good, especially the character development, and the actors do a great job. It has one of my favorite casts. And the music, I love the music. I try to remember if there is a Bay film with a bad score. Maybe Bad Boys 2. I remember I watch the opening 5 minutes of Bad Boys on repeat because I loved the main title music by Mark Mancina. I love Steve Jablonsky's score for The Island and Transformers are great. I even liked it when he ripped off Hans Zimmer's Inception score for Dark of the Moon.

Michael Bay is not the worst thing to happen to the movie industry. He’s produced many good films such as Bumblebee, A Quiet Place, and The Rock. Not to mention he made an unforgettable Got Milk advertisement in his early years. When I first saw the movie Transformers (2007) back in 4th grade with my best friend, we had a blast, and it was an experience I’ll never forget. What some critics need to get through their thicks skulls is that not all movies have to be mature or consistent to be art, the same way not all critics agree on a movie. That’s the beauty with freedom of speech. Michael Bay knows what he’s doing, he’s far from stupid. He’s giving the audience eye candy called Bay-hem, which is what the audience would like to see from a director like Michael Bay. It could be worse. It could be Uwe Boll. Can you imagine Uwe Boll directing Transformers or 6 Underground?
@zew1414

I agree with most of what you said. Personally I got an oficial respect and admiration for Bay quite recently so I might be "influenced" to talk about the amazing aspects of his films. (Granted, I only seen until the 3rd Transformers and have no desire to see them) But I don't think his movies are long, in the world where everyone complains about movie length his movies are seen by many... I guess the long joke scenes is part of his spice mixing that in the end works for many. I also think that we will start to see more of "Pain and Gain" Bay from now on. Very excited about that. Like you said, few have ever (and probably will never) have a command o the image and viceral experience has he does... so it is quite funny when (specially) filmmakers just bash on him. Exited to see his next chapter, I think it will be a good one. I'll be there on day one for his new one and hope we get a theatrical run. Anyone knows about this? I haven't seen the "Rock" and "Armageddon" since they came out... so I can't really put them on my favourites. But I have a felling they will, other than that I have the same list only adding The Bad Boys. In fact I had zero Dvd's of him and just got a bunch in my collection... should see them soon. And lets not forget he has two movies in the Criterion Collection.

Amazing work as always Rossatron. I am happy to find someone who tries to actually analyse Bay's work from a neutral point of view. I agree with almost everything you said, even though I have a very strong connection to Bad Boys. It is still my favourite Bay movie, even though I can admit this is more sentimental than rational. He should have the ability to dial back on some of those urges, but at the same time he does so many things right. Transformers was, for me, an amazing job and I seriously doubt anyone could have done a better job. Keep up the good work!

It honestly surprises me in retrospect that Michael Bay wasn't hired to do a GI Joe movie given his obvious obsessive love for the US Military. I feel he would have suited that franchise a lot more than Transformers. Some of the best stuff from the first live-action Transformers flick was the banter between the soldiers and I was always let down by the fact that Tyrese Gibson and Josh Duhamal became glorified cameos in the sequels. I feel the simple problem with his Transformers movies is how painfully obvious it is that Bay has zero real fascination or affinity for the franchise or the characters that inhabit them. His raunchy black-comedy approach was always jarringly at odds with the larger-than-life intergalactic war narratives that come with the Transformer's lore. One of the reasons I love the recent live-action effort (Bumblebee) is that Travis Knight masterfully built on Bay's accomplishments when it came to visually bringing the Transformers to life and finally inserting in characters you can give a damn about. That and it's obvious Knight actually loves the Transformers brand. While I would never call anything in his filmography great action cinema, Bay is capable of making fun popcorn entertainment (Ex. Bad Boys I and II, The Rock, Pain & Gain, The Island) and the mostly serious 13 Hours showcased that he is capable pulling off dramatic pathos. From a technical and film-making standpoint I find little to complain with his films outside of his tendency to abuse the rapid-fire editing technique. It's just...the Transformers movies really bring out all of his worst tendencies as a director and Revenge of the Fallen to this day remains one of the worst movies I've ever seen in the theater.

The Scott Brothers are way better directors than Bay. Bay had only 1 good film ever: The Island. His style just doesn't make coherent films, he should only give the general direction of the movie and not have any influence on the over-the-top action shots and silly "comedy".
