I never though John Wick would become so popular and when i saw the first film,i was not ready.I m glad to see something without the Marvel/DC/Disney brand that brought some fresh air to an genre currently dominated by CGI and super heroes.Say whatever you want about John Wick but it s franchise worth to watch.

We're truly in a Keanu Renaissance. John Wick's getting a little too over-the-top with the third installment but since it's a great excuse for awesome action, I'm all in for the ride. Let's just hope The Matrix sequels can continue Keanu's action legacy without ruining his original action franchise....

I feel like John Wick is building up to an emotional and poignant finale. I wouldn't really want the series to go on indefinitely as that would rob it of the sense that John is fighting a war he can't win. That's what hits me so hard about these movies. Wick is a near mythic figure of death and destruction, but he struggles for every little victory he has and that struggle is permeated with the sense that it's leading to an inevitable, inescapable tragic conclusion.

We are witnessing his profession post-wife and all the emotions he repressed/never required/had available prior to his meeting his wife. Having somewhat of a soul will, at times, impair/impede necessary actions to be performed. His character prior to his wife was one of an efficient killing machine and even though there were "relationships" in his life, they were mainly on a "business level". This is a world within a world, one that revolves around the notion of honor and respect among killers and thieves. A world we know in reality does not exist at level at this point in time. There may have been a time when this environment had its moments, but they were fleeting.

@@palehorse24681 Keep pedaling, you;ll catch up. The underworld of criminals and those that are tasked to dispatch problems are real Jose. I was saying that the level of which this movie, that is made to entertain and be hopefully profitable, does not reflect that underworld as it exits now. There were, I imagine, when despite their evil intent, times that men displayed an honor code for killing one another. Actually the mafia had restrictions on cop killings. Any lower level member that killed a cop without being ordered to do so by a don or his representative was dealt with accordingly.Other hits were decided and farmed out to those that specialized in the field. And just so you are tracking, I am a 61 year old straight guy with a life full of experience in the real world in a variety of environments.

I've been reading John Kreng's book about how to film action and there is an interesting note he makes about how fight directors in China are stars just as big as the director and receive awards as well as fanbases of their own. With the John Wick series putting fight directors and stuntwork to this level in the west (even starting rumblings of stunt oscars), it makes me wonder if it hasnt started a revolution.

I'll be personally happy if they end with Chapter 5 so long as it's a proper ending like the final chapter in a trilogy: a true conclusion. Ending on Part IV is just weird... my opinion.

I could make a video essay on how good this one is. The editing, the breakdown, just breathtaking. 13:42 - 13:53 is probably the best part of the editing besides the beginning AMV. I had never noticed those symbolic wings or halos and you pointed it out without even talking about them specifically. This is just a really good video.

Great video! Although you are right about the villains, I disagree with your stance on Chapter 3. Everything you said about Chapter 2 is what I think about 3. I find myself returning to Parabellum more often than the first two, which can feel a little mopey and sluggish at times. Parabellum's pacing and flow, (Particularly Act 1 and Act 3), felt more like it was inspired by The Raid 2, and that's one of my favourite action moves ever, so that may explain my bias.

I'll never forget the general mood to the first John Wick before it came out. "Oh, another lame awful movie by Keanu Reeves? The story is about a guy who kills people who killed his dog? Is this for real?" Boy did this movie prove everyone wrong. Word of mouth spread about how good it was and to not expect it to get this far is an understatement. Glad I'm not the only one who loved the second John Wick of the trilogy. Most people I spoke to preferred the first JW the most.

Above all, John is a character we're rooting for. We want him to survive, which means that we're caught up by the story. In a lot of films, the action is pointless and over the top, but the action in John WIck movies makes you root for John and hope for his survival.

I will put it simple. John Rambo: an over the top guy in a real world. John MacLaine : a real guy in an over the top world. John Matrix (Arnold in comando) : an over the top guy in an over the top world... with low budget. John Wick: an over the top guy in an over the top world... with high budget.

I really think JW3 was a missed opportunity. Should have deepened into Wicks past at the Academy. The fights are just meh because Wick is on a round trip, not trying to survive. The ending was very WTF doesn't make sense. An unpleasant surprise that would have been good if had hints about it from before. I am afraid that JW4 be more similar to 3 than to 2. Maybe JW had reached it's climax with JW2, opposite to Mission Impossible, reaching climax in 6, and awaiting for finale in 7 and 8.

(14:13) You mention that “There’s great action outside of the West.” Could you by chance elaborate on some nonwestern action-film standouts as that goes? I’m sure they’re out there-and I have no qualms about watching films with subtitles-but I’m just kinda out of the loop about what’s available outside of the major films that come to theaters in the US.

Immediately I would say anything recent by Wu Jing, Dante Lam and the Donnie Yen Ip Man trilogy, the Max Zheng-starring Master Z, Furie, Shadow (Zhang Yimou), Buybust and The Night Comes For Us come to mind.

@@handcoding Definitely the Ip Man series and The Night Comes for Us is a brutal must see. Anything by Iko Uwais. The Raid series and Headshot are gold. Any recent Takashi Miike as well. His film Blade of the Immortal is one of my favorites of these last two years

On the John Wick 2 commentary track Chad Stahelski says that the reflections of the soul exhibit and all of the numerous reflections throughout the film are meant to represent the duality of the two worlds John wick is a part. The normal world with his wife that he wants, and the assassin world that keeps pulling him back in.

"John... is a man of focus. Commitment. Sheer will." Pretty much sums up the films really. It knows what core audience it's aiming for, it knows how to deliver a simple but gripping/ relatable narrative, it knows how to earn your respect. Loads of action film writers/ directors just think that excessive egregious explosions makes for good action flick but that's just laziness and creative bankruptcy. John Wick's more grandeur spectacles of gunfu literally still has that intimate vibe to it; it's consistent and focused no matter how stylish/ grand the setpieces are.

Incredible video, you nailed almost everything about this franchise in my opinion. I can only think of one thing that you and I disagree on. I think the 4th should be the last. They've set up the pieces on the board and we're heading to an all-out continental vs underworld war. The hope is that it will be the big payoff, everything will e tied off and the character will have done what he needed to do for both the story and for the audience. The creative minds behind these movies have captured lightning in a bottle, the last thing I want to see is for it to become oversaturated or burnt out after movie after movie, sequel after sequel. End on a high note and then get out while you still have the audience in awe.

I love John Wick but I do feel that 3 was a miss step. The first 2 films made you believe in a world, which is quite fantastical but the 3rd overstepped the mark in some areas. Gave too much of a back story to John Wick and he just became too indestructible. The film also pretty much avoided the high table, which in the second film became the big bad organisation and just gave us a very bland head of the organisation. There are still some positives, the action is great and Halle Barry is wonderful but it felt much more style than substance, which I didn't get from the first 2 films.

I actually liked John Wick 3 but i understand your opinion.At least it didn´t become another A Good Day to Die Hard.I was very excited for JW3 because the first film took me by surprise and the second was a great follow up and the third could easily go to the same route like most follow ups but Chad Stahelski is a director who what he´s doing and his crew did the best work.The plot isn´t extraordinary but what makes it very good is the characters and Keanu Reeves himself.No other actor could nail the role like Reeves.I also love the world of assassins and it s my favorite assassin film next to Leon and The Killer(not comparing)

@@kelnhide It isn't a bad movie, the action is still very good, as is the acting, editing and score. For the most part I enjoyed it but it wasn't that satisfactory viewing experience that the first two films were and I felt the story, felt strained and turning John Wick into an indestructible superhero at the end, just felt horrible.

I'm gonna be really honest. I think for the most part, all John Wick movies are competent action flicks that excell in terms of the action scenes, but overall, they are still pretty forgettable. They don't have any real character arc, they lack a strong pacing, they have a minimilistic narrative that doesn't even work well, they have an illogical narrative structure (especially the 2nd and 3rd movie) etc. Therefore, there isn't really any emotional depth behind the action scenes that would actually make them more effective and suspenseful. The John Wick movies just feel like random action scenes thrown together without any finite goal, instead of feeling like actual feature films. The Raid: Redemption and Dredd are still the golden standards when it comes to straightforward action movies. They have strong atmosphere, excellent and focused pacing, simple yet effective storytelling and character development, etc. The John Wick movies seem great on a technical level but they also feel very shallow as cinematic experiences.

I understand that perspective, but would say that they have to really be seen in terms of where they sit in the world of what I'd consider action cinema. I would say though of course it's opinion, as The Raid only really has any depth due to them establishing early on his wife's pregnancy, and I have never really considered Dredd as good as a lot of others.

I think you're trying to hard. Even the golden age of the 80s wasn't anything deep. Any substance was very subtle like Robocop and Predator. John Wick has its subtlety as well. But we are here for the action. You want depth go watch The Irishman when it comes out on Netflix

I still remember when I first entered a theater with all in mind that it's Keannu so I want to watch this. The movie theater wasn't in a blast, there's not much crowd out there watching, but gosh, we all witnessed greatness in there and began to spread the "word of mouth" for one of the best action franchise in History of Cinema.

Solid essay. The first remains my favourite. The third one the one I liked the least. It looks great from a technical aspect, but plotwise, there are way too many points that just don't make sense, even contradicting its own world building. Also, when it comes to the action scenes themselves, although each by itself is great, there's just way too many of them, each going on for way too long, left me exhausted watching it, and not in a good way, like when one watches a grand spectacle movie. I'll have to rewatch Vol. 2 one of these days.

It's easy. John wick is the ultimate badass movie good guy beyond corruption. Keanu Reeves is the ultimate good guy in real life. Also a seemingly incorruptible good guy. Any other actor could have never accomplished this.

I really like all three movies. But I really hope they don't increase the scope of the action much more in the fourth. The strong suite of the John Wick films is the amazing choreography and stunt work, not the big sets and CGI. The horse/motorcycle scene is pushing the boundaries for me.

Great video. Top notch editing, that intro was superb. I'm with you on 3, it seemed like they knew where they wanted the world to be at for 4 and bloated 3 to get there. So what would you of done differently? 😎 for me I think they should done away with Morocco, the coin maker and the elder felt rushed. Have the Russian connection, give us some Wick back story and have an old ally help him out in the same way Berry does. Oh yeah and get rid of the stupid reverse grip sword fighting, ugh.

I enjoyed the gun play of the third but the martial arts was still not the best. The glass room fight was full of bad striking. Over swinging and arms being left out waiting for John to manipulate them.

been an uber fan since the first movie came out. What makes this good is the acting, storyline and the world. What Hollywood need to take from this is R rated movies can generate loads of cash as proven with this movie and joker. What they also need to understand there is no political agenda to make it woke like dark fate killing the franchise and all other tv/movies going in the same route. No woke just a good story line and great acting!

The first one is an absolute masterpiece of action film. The second one is easily one of my favorite sequels ever (although I give the slight edge to the first). The third one once again is amazing but I do have to agree that it has trouble staying focused. It still has me hooked on John’s story going into Chapter 4 though.

Aside from how different the franchise is from what I've seen I appreciate for something else that no one seems to realize. Back in the early 2000s Keanu was attached to a project with 20th Century Fox for a live action series of films for the anime Cowboy Bebop of which Keanu is a huge fan, to the point where he had said that he was willing to play the lead character Spike Spiegel for free. Unfortunately this fell through after years of developmental hell. Now being a fan of the show like Keanu is I find that this is as close to playing Spike as Keanu to come unfortunately.

My biggest problem with the series is that it's going into the realm of fantasy. John seems to be becoming unstoppable even after sustaining a ton a injuries. I'm willing to suspend my disbelief between 1 and 2 because some weeks had passed, so he had time to heal. However between 2 and 3 only minutes passed and he's already in fighting form. Not to mention the fact that he fell how many stories at the end of 3? It's a shame cuz in the first one, you felt like every fight was wearing him down and it felt realistic

The New Guy I honestly wanted the third to be the last since I love prefect trilogy’s that are left alone. Trilogies that do a perfect job and then just stop, ending it there are the best and that’s what I kinda was sad about the cliff hanger in parabellum.
