Ah Michael Crawford - "Phantom" "Barnum" "Dolly"; "Some Mothers do 'Have 'Em". His performances go beyond words. His voice range in "Phantom" is incredible !!! Good on 'ya!!!
having ages ago seen him in Barnum - wow; I went to see him in Oz, as the wizard; pure Michael, and the loveliest bit, for me, at one small point, he gave a little chuckle, which was pure Frank Spencer - utterly magical.
We have seen him live twice- once in 1991 with The Music of Andrew Lloyd Webber tour, and a second time on his solo tour in 1999. Just incredible- I would LOVE to see him live again!
I was listening to a song, "Please Wake Up," from an old children's movie, "Once Upon a Forest," learned Crawford sang it (never heard of him, by the way), searched for other things he sang, and saw this. I thought, "Wait, he sang THIS? That rock 'n roll song by Honeymoon Suite? Now this I've got to hear." ...I ended up both disappointed and awestruck.

Went to see Michael at Maroochydore, on the Sunshine Coast Queensland Australia. concert was outdoors and a strong Southerly wind was blowing. It nearly blew Michael off the stage. Like the true professional he is, he just kept singing even though the wind was pushing him sideways across the stage. Love him.

Training and practice. I found after being in a school choir, I learned quickly how to hold vocal notes for longer than 7-8 seconds. Michael Crawford has been professionally trained in his singing and the more he warmed up before the actual performance, the longer he can hold notes.
Vin Vass it is Michael Balls song and the key to that last note isn’t just how long you hold it but how much power you have behind it. Michael B blows Michael Crawfords effort away.
Really, I can't decide between the two Michaels with LCE. They both own this song in their own way. Each of the two men has their particular voice timbre, so in my mind, whoever prefers Ball over Crawford, or Crawford over Ball, is basically auditory aesthetics. This said...if Ball were a bit younger (not sure how old he is), I would love to hear him take a turn as Erik the Phantom. He would be phenomenal, I think. His voice can be both light and angelic and thunderous by turns, and his acting skills are tops.

I noticed a lot of comments mentioning Ball's version being better, so I went and watched a few of Ball's versions and all I have to say is...you are kidding yourselves if you think he even comes close to Crawford. Ball sings well but Crawford PERORMS exceptionally well, the difference is Crawford's performance and the sheer control he has. Ball doesn't come close, also Anthony Warlow comes in a close second to Crawford, but Crawford is in a class of his own. Sorry not sorry.

Don't forget that when he sang as Frank Spencer in one episode, he was completely flat and octaves out of tune. When I used to watch Some Mother's Do Ave Em as a kid my mum always told me that he had a glorious singing voice and I never believed her. How in the world could such a klutz and a knack for rubbing people up the wrong way also be an angelic singer? Then one Christmas after the Learning To Drive Christmas Special episode, channel Ten Australia screened "A Christmas Spectacular With Michael Crawford and Friends". I sneakily stayed up late to watch some of it and even at the age of 8, I could hardly believe that it was the same man who I'd just finished watching drive a car off a pier into the sea then scream "Have I Passed (driving test)?"
