Rules set out the upper limits on spending on these occasions but creative accounting means that the playing field isn't as level as it should be. Mr Crick heads to the Wirral South by-election.

It’s hardly breaking the bank sending William Hague or Jack Straw to the Wirral.

Hmm... Can't help thinking this is somehow relevant to certain campaign spending by certain people in a certain referendum. Because obviously, if the results of a certain referendum can be called into doubt because of actions taken by some to avoid campaign spending limitations, then would that also not call into question every other election result were such limitations were avoided in the past? Could we even go so far as to say EU government policy since 1997 and before is based upon election results that could have come about by cheating on campaign spending? The question is, how far do certain people want to push this? A simple google search will bring up plenty of instances where main political parties actively broke the rules to avoid spending limitations. Are they quite sure they want to go down that road? Because the potential consequences for everyone would be very hard to control.

I would estimate that 50% of the UK population would switch off instantly on hearing Michael's Crick's rasping tone of voice.
