Well done, Michael. A true ambassador bridging the gap between American and Scottish drumming.

From Ireland and have as a drumset player indulged in pipe band drumming as a past time hobby, ie I'm a drumset player who has dabbled at pipe band snare ideas casually, but only now realised the concept of muting a stroke by pressing into the snare head. This lesson has rocked my world to be frank. My dedicated snare friends at home failed to show me this technique but here is this American guy in another continent showing me something I never even knew about. Awesome technique and my new goal to learn properly

Describes it correctly but missing the mark with execution. 3 out of the 4 left-handed Scottish drag taps are "flat", meaning the dead stick grace note and terminal stroke are hitting at the same time. He correctly states that you want to keep the stick level low with this exercise for the doubles, but routinely picks the stick height up for the notes that follow the flams with the flam taps. Pipe band drumming is not rudimental based like other forms of snare drumming. It's more rhythmically based. For instance, in 2/4 marches with the typical swing feel, a five stroke is different depending on where it falls in relation to the dot and cut. In jigs, the 5 stroke roll can be based on a triplet or sextuplet feel. As Alex Duthart said, "There are only 2 rudiments in pipe band drumming- a tap and a buzz. Everything else is a variation of that." The dead stick in the drag being a buzz not allowed to rebound. The drum does sound great.

Hey I know this guy! Anyways, this is such a cool approach to drumming. I hope more marching percussionists get exposed to this...the way I was :)
