@@BenSimpson1998 genius should be rewarded or it will die in a corner…and I’ve learned from watching your videos that dying can be a bit unpleasant at times…imagine your genius being impaled on a stake! I don’t think any of us want that…maybe just avoid pointy objects altogether
Thanks for covering this in such detail. I agree, we need more releases like this. I also hadn't heard of Michael J - there's a small interview with him on RU-vid at a time when he seemed genuinely sad he couldn't currently afford to produce any films. I'm 7 films in, watching them in order. They are, as advertised, *very* cheap, but I love them - so please yes, do a retrospective - or a series of retrospectives - by all means!
I’m working on reviews of them as I go. Just watched bloodstream. I too am really enjoying them, not polished but personal, enjoyable and overflowing with enthusiasm and fun
I must admit I am curious to see how MJM movies play to a wider audience. Up until now they've mostly only been known to a handful of people, who tend to have a pre-existing allegiance/sympathy towards very low budget British filmmaking and chances are have seen the films as the result of tape or dvdr trading. Whereas this box set is going to widen the net to people who are paying a significant amount of money to watch these films and for whom MJM is an unknown quantity. So might be a tougher crowd to win over. I wouldn't go into the films expecting none stop blood and guts, well..,Invitation to Hell, Bloodstream and Skare will live up to those expectations, but left to his own devices the films he tended to make are more in the psychological thriller vein, more character and plot twist driven than anything else. I never met MJM, he was a very private guy, but he was good enough to send me an autographed still from one of his movies after he learnt I was a fan. So it's nice to see his filmography getting the deluxe treatment.
I’m about half way through and really enjoying it for the most part. I understand what you mean, it’s certainly different to most home media releases and I can see it being a very acquired taste, but it’s great to see a light shone on such a hardworking and passionate artist.
Waiting on mine to arrive I happened to catch Blood Stream on BMovie TV and got on looking for more from him and was disappointed then later in the week this set was announced and I pre-ordered immediately I can’t wait
Brilliant unboxing video, man. I'm just waiting on my set to dispatch from Amazon. So looking forward to receiving this in the post. It was a blind buy for me.
Thanks for uploading this unboxing, it seems like forever this was announced and I wanted to have a perspective of what this was going to look like in physical form, before potentially taking a dive into purchasing it myself. Which I am still debating haha but leaning more towards YES! I will be checking out some of your other videos too btw
Great unboxing, looks like a gorgeous release - I'll be picking it up if it goes on sale, Jan is an expensive month already with Arrow'ss Moodysson set and BFI's Bergman
Yes Avalon. I think we paid £30 for Avalon! and the copy looked like total dog shit. Planning to special edition up our reviews with these new blurays. although I suspect everything was shot video, so not expecting miracles.
Up until 2004 he used 16mm (with the exception of Bloodstream which was 8mm) and so far the restorations looks pretty nice, with standard definition inserts where no original footage was available!
Just seen Qualen and that’s probably a good shout for a review. Invitation to Hell/The Last Night are ripe for it too but they’re only 45 mins each. They were released on a double bill though so…
Hi Ben, At least "Michael J Murphy" was at home in the 80s on precert vhs as "Invitation to hell" (1982) got released by "Scorpio" releasing. This precert legends company also put out " Andy Milligan's" Ghastly One's" (1967) which definitely Michael J Murphy" must of been inspired by in some way or other except the latter was a Section one 39 title.
Got to say i both hate and love these boutique sellers giving us these titles but 60% of the time the movies are terrible and there's like one stand out title, on the other hand if digital media started in 1900 these titles would be comparable to the DVD only release we get now that either turn up on Amazon prime or available digitally for £2, films like The Devil's Machine and if that was the case we wouldn't be paying all kinds for these movies.
These unboxing videos never offer insight into the actual digital content, only offering a glimpse at the box and printed content inside. I guess you are trying to rush the content before other tubers rush out their unbox clip, but....
