@William Wells Sounds like you have childhood issues that you haven't dealt with. There was never any solid PROOF. You know, that stuff you have to have to in a court of law? The parents who got paid off-their son admitted that he lied. Allegations are easy to make and in this case they were eternally damaging.
Check out Shalamar's Jeffrey Daniel on A night to remember, 1982. He taught Michael Jackson the moves. Try Bill Bailey in 1940's. Sorry to have burst your bubble.
@@kevanwillis4571 what bubble did u burst? Every mj fan is well aware of the fact that mj did not invent the moonwalk but perfected it. You're not the smart guy you think yourself to be.
Wasn't just a regular audience, it was the biggest stars and the music industries top people at the time. They were all fans that day...just like us. That night was something the world will NEVER forget!!! I actually feel blessed to experience this live, with my entire family, my school, and a big percentage of the viewing world!!! To this day, even indigenous people who have NO TECHNOLOGY know who Michael is...even more than Jordan and others! He had the ability to reach out souls, and actually used his gift to help poor people from all over the world!
YES!! My family and I went nuts, we heard all our neighbors screaming and clapping too. It was on the news, everyone at school was talking about it. This included the teachers and staff.
Snd then Ghosts for next Halloween please. I love Ghosts even more than Thriller, not only because of its message and great music, but especially because of the phenomenal choreography.
Me, too. I recorded it on video, and watched probably 50 times. Mesmerizing, especially back then. This was a special anniversary show of the Motown studio. And this was the first time he showed some of his signature moves. People were blown away.
The crowd went nuts, and everyone at home did too. I was ten years old and we were all crowded around the television and were instantly awestruck by what had just happened. It was an instant sensation, kids in school were trying to do it the next day. They played the performance from the 25th Motown Anniversary on Mtv, and people couldn't get enough. It was an amazing time, and exciting since I had always been a Motown fan, and seeing this resurgence.
I remember watching this live on TV in the 80's. We all just looked at each other like "what did he just do?!" To see where he gets some of his moves from, check out James Brown Night Train on the TAMI show. Phenomenal!
I remember watching that as it aired on TV. Most people hadn’t seen Michael Jackson in a while and he had morphed into this beauty with stunning moves like we’d never seen before. That night absolutely catapulted him into the mainstream. He went from star to superstar.
The moonwalk was originally called the backslide, and was adopted by Michael from an R&B artist named Jeffrey Daniel. But damned if MJ didn't become the one who forever stapled it into dance history, making it probably the most iconic move ever.
He was always a hell of a performer. He is lip-synching but that was fairly commonplace for these types of shows back then. I've always favored his first solo album "Off The Wall" over Thriller.
Seeing Michael live in concert was one of the single best experiences of my life, even after all these years/concerts the only live performance that came anywhere close was Madonna. She was also incredible.
Here is a little history of the Moonwalk. There are many recorded instances of the moonwalk; similar steps are reported as far back as 1932, used by Cab Calloway. In 1985, Calloway said that the move was called "The Buzz" when he and others performed it in the 1930s
It's a standard mime move, too. I saw the French mime master Marcel Marceau when I was a child in the 70s, and he was old by then. He did the "walking against the wind" bit that incorporates what we now call the moonwalk. There were dancers doing the moonwalk on TV back when Michael was a child, and I'm pretty sure Michael saw both the early 70s film, The Little Prince, where Bob Fosse as The Snake does a moonwalk on sand (there's a clip of this on YT), and he went to the David Bowie show in 1974 at Los Angeles' Universal Amphitheater, where Bowie (who studied mime) also did a moonwalk. There's a YT clip of Bowie doing his version at that show, as well. I'm sure this move goes way, way, way back and was something that physical artists of many cultures knew how to do. Michael's is very impressive. Jeffrey Daniel, who used to be a Soul Train dancer and in the 70s-80s R&B pop group Shalamar, taught Michael directly how to do it. Daniel called it the backslide.
Michael always said his moves were inspired by both those that came before him and the modern street dancers. And like others have said, he then put these moves into the mainstream and now they’ll always be remembered 🙌🏼
This performance is historical. Not for his singing talents (it was playback), but because this was the start of Michael Jackson's fame and respect as a solo artist, not just a part of Jackson 5. This is the one performance that really put him, and his talent, on the map.
You just witnessed the MOST important 4 steps backwards of any human on Earth!!! ❤❤❤ Michael was the MOST important entertainer of his time. He paved the way for so many artists going forward. We all owe a debt of gratitude to his love of Elvis performances....he was always trying to surpass Elvis! He admired Elvis in so many ways; he borrowed from Elvis' costuming, dancing, performing, drawing in the audience, the flash, all of it!!
I watched this when it was live on television. I was in grade school, and I remember me, my parents, and my younger sister were watching it, and when he did the moonwalk for the first time, we couldn't believe what we just witnessed! I am so lucky that I got to witness this LIVE! It is one of those moments in my childhood that I will NEVER forget!
I have been a massive fan of MJ since I was a young kid in the late 80s/early 90s and it still hurts that he's gone. What an unbelievable artist and musician... 😪
Hearing that he died is one of my memories where I recall exactly where I was and what I was doing... Monumental. Was in LA when they had his memorial service at the Staples Center. RIP.
This was the Motown 25 year anniversary celebration with a slate of stars who performed and that isn't just any audience. The crowd was mostly full of recording industry executives and recording stars. So that standing ovation was the respect of the industry.
Not with the current crop of "artists". The music industry doesn't care about talent anymore. They just want a product they can easily control and market.
This performance was part of Motown 25 which was a salute to the first twenty five years of Motown held at the Pasadena Civic Auditorium. Michael Jackson did not want to do this show at first but Barry Gordie talked him into doing it as long as he could have a spotlight to sing one of his current new songs off of Thriller which had just been released.
Jovaughn, this is truly a Master. Since the first day I heard this song to today I still get chills at his craftsmanship to his art. RIP Thanks for this chill.
I'll never forget when Billie Jean was televised. My parents were in their late 60's and even they were up, dancing and snapping their fingers. We miss you, Michael.
There never ever will be another one like him, he was one of a kind and we all are so lucky that he lived in our time and leaving us his wonderful beautyful legacy. Thank you Michael for all that you did ♥️♥️♥️🌹🌹🌹🌈🦋👑🌍⭐💫🙏
There will be never anyone like him. Also check out Chris Cornell singing “Billie Jean” in a deeper way he’s got such a powerful emotional voice and brings the lyrics to life he’s unbelievable
FUN FACT: In the 30's, a similar moonwalk step was used by Cab Calloway, who called the move "The Buzz". In 1944, Judy Garland and Margaret O'Brien danced in a similar fashion in the movie "Meet Me in St. Louis". In 1950, Dick Van Dyke created a variation of the moonwalk and camel walk in a comedy routine called "Mailing A Letter On A Windy Corner". French mime artist Marcel Marceau used the moonwalk throughout his career (1940's - 1980's).
The fascination you people have with what he did with his own face is beyond me... he did it because he wanted to, not because he was looking for the approval of anyone else.
I understand that it was what he wanted, but a reputable plastic surgeon doesn't operate on someone until their nose lacks structural integrity. Surgery isn't the answer to body or facial dysmorphia.
@@snakelite61 Lacking structural integrity... please. The tabloids liked to report that his nose was "disintegrating" but if you look at actual photos, even from 2009, it looks fine? Lmao. He had lupus, and a lot of the surgeries were reconstructive due to that.
I watched him LIVE IN CONCERT TWISR and MAAAAAN,did he DELIVER!!!! A MAGICAL artist on stage!! Will FOREVER be my number ONE artist of ALL TIME!🤩🎶 Love seeing your reaction to this!🤩
I was 28 in 1984. I always had watched the Grammys. All of us knew this was special. For one, back then Grammy audiences never reacted like this. It had always been a way more solemn occasion, believe it or not. Michael had them going crazy. He had us all in the palm of his hand. It was one of the greatest moments ever.
Did you know: Michael wasn't satisfied with his preformance and he got mad at himself and thought he didn't do well. I believe it was because he wanted to land on his toes longer then go down on his feet. But his mind changed after Fred Astaire called him saying it was a great preformance.
I watched live. Shot up from the sofa when he did that moonwalk and went to sit back down and fell flat on the floor and stayed there. Mind blown. This was at the Motown 25thAnniversary and every name in Motown of all time was there to see him do that. The only one allowed to sing a new song, not a Motown song. From that moment everyone knew that he was the King of Motown and the King of Pop. Always will be.
MJ lipsynced most of his lives shows...the most blatent was the Superbowl....hence why I think GaGa is a better performer than MJ.....MJ j.g ad the charisma but didnt have the LUNGS to dance a d sing at the sametime....only a couple songs hd could do it but after that he had to lipa sync
I_ride not most of his shows at all.. Look at the Bad tour for example, 98% live vocals and amazing ones at that... Also he had planned to sing most of the This is It shows live... When he did one off tv shows etc he did lip sync mostly... Saying Ga, Ga is a better performer than MJ though is beyond a joke!!!! Michael always had a great soulful voice which gets lost abit with some who only see the amazing dancing...
@@hotmail305 Gaga lipped as well during supposed live concerts. And you've got to be kidding me if you claim she is a better performer than Michael. Not even really a fan of him but that is clearly an absurd claim.
I_ride you’re getting it for that comment hahaha... but c’mon Gaga a better performer than MJ??? Not even close... performers like Prince, Usher, JT are better comparisons. I would’ve even said huh if you said Pink,,,but Gaga... it was hard for Michael to sing when he was dancing cause of how hard he moves his body, he puts everything he has into his moves when he was performing. Look at the Dangerous Bucharest performance of Human Nature. He’s popping and locking so hard he can barely get anything out, it’s actually a moment you almost wish he was lip syncing it hahaha.
He's the BEST ever !! Miss him ❤ 1st time I saw him MoonWalk on MTV and I was walking by tv and just froze... Whhhattt?!! I was in my 40 s and I've seen a lot 🎶 but nothing as good as this. I saw Elvis in concert so he's King of Rock and Michael King of Pop or what ever he wanted still is King. ❤ LOVE YOUR REACTION WHOOO !!
I saw this... it is so amazing... he was so extremely talented. I believe it was 1984, before my kids were born. That gloved hand was so hot during the 80s. He is still the king of Pop for this very reason right here!!! You could see his dancing talent from young age, and his voice too... I mean he owned the 80’s!!
I'm not sure how old you are or if you ever went to a Michael Jackson concert. But I did and I can remember seeing grown men black men white men young boys girls women just passing out at the sight of Michael Jackson! He would walk out on the stage and just stand there for 10-15 minutes if people would just be screaming and crying and passing out... It was absolutely something to witness and see
Also singer Jackie Wilson had these kind of steps in the 1950's. He was an influence on young Michael. Even Michael's dance moves as a kid were already impressing.
@@turdferguson400 Yes, its true "everything old is new again", the older you get and have lived through everything, you see it easily. That I think, is why they remake movies around 20 years apart so that new generations see them as new - they're not.
He is Lip Synching this performance, and that wasn't a secret to anybody when you watch a live video you'll hear the difference. He's still amazing though.
I saw this at age 5 in 1985....I can remember listening to music back to when I was 2 fortunately🤗.....and when I saw this for the first time ......MY JAW DROPPED AND I BECAME OBSSESED WITH MJ....and still am at age 42
My sister and I hurried up and did our chores just to watch this; I was 14 years old! We recorded it because back then you can't do like today and rewind. I watched that recording forever- and finally- learned how to moonwalk all over our house! He was and always will be the real and only Magic Mike!
I'm from UK and I remember this was on the news at the time and I stayed up late to watch it on the show. It was over way too quickly. Long live the King of Pop.
I remember seeing this at the time it came out. I was a young teen. I was glued to the TV, my heart racing and trying to absorb every second of it bc back then you never knew the next time you could rewatch the performance. No one back then had ever (to most peoples knowledge) moved the way he did. But then he did the moonwalk and our jaws collectively dropped! We were like..."What the hell did he just do?! Did he suddenly have rollerskates on or walked on ice?!" Then he did it again and we realised he did it with his feet! We were all gobsmacked! From that point on everyone spent the rest of the 80s trying to do the moonwalk! 😂 I feel so lucky to have lived through the 80s! What an amazing era for music!
Here's something that a lot of people might not realize about Michael Jackson but he does almost all of his own choreography in his songs in his dancing and stuff he definitely creates the vast majority of his choreography it's very little that's left up to someone else. Really love Michael hated to see him leave this world but I'll damn sure be happy as hell when he comes back in the very near future.
