As a teenager from the 80s I can tell you I was sitting in my living room watching this on TV. We went insane when he did that. Every kid at school was trying to moonwalk down the hallways! It was incredible everybody was raving over it. And if you didn't watch it or if you were not rich enough to have a VCR back then then you missed out on the most incredible Dance Evolution ever created. I believe this was the 25th anniversary of Motown.

That's a fantastic story to learn cause I was born way after this aired, but according to my mom and aunts, they saw MJ do this for Motown 25 on live television and said the same it was the biggest thing to talk about after it happened. Times were so much different then, both for better and worse, but it's way worthwhile to listen to folks who experienced these big things during their time. Thank you for sharing that story! He was browsing in a record store while "Beat It" was playing in the store and he overheard some kids talking & saying something to the effect of "who the hell is this guitarist trying to play like Eddie Van Halen?" So, Eddie walked up behind them, tapped them on the shoulder and said "actually, that was me", and then walked away. Can you imagine how those kids' heads were blown? LOL I love that story.

I was twelve when this aired on TV and it was all everyone talked about for a week. He lost his popularity later, but this is where he claimed his throne, before this he was moderately popular with the RnB crowd, and people loved him as a kid in the Jackson five, but this performance cemented him in the charts for a decade. Most people, and I guess I mean middle white America had never seen anyone dance like this and the moonwalk looked supernatural.

@@mikefetterman6782 Correct! That's why there was no promotion of Blood on Dance Floor ( the best selling Remix Album of all time but many of US folks are Stranger to this album even to this day) in US. But regarding his Financial issue the problem arises due to his extravagant spending Inspite of not working. After History he released his last Studio Album Invincible (6 years later in 2001) & never did a Tour , not to forget the Album Release coincided with his feud with Sony which stopped the promotion. Which followed by 2003 documentary & Subsequent Allegation that Resulted in 2005 Court Trial in which he was Vindicated ✌️. Rest is the History. Then you have to talk why he "lost" his popularity, what I doubt. After the success of Thriller and buying the Beatles catalog the industrie and the media tried with all their power to destroy this man. No other artist or should I say no other man was treated so cruel and unfair. No other artist had survived the allegations in 1993 and hit the world with the masterpiece HIStory. No other artist had survived the allegations and trial of 2005, to come back, without having new music, no promotion to sell out 50 concerts in only a few hours. And don't tell me he was not popular in the US. Look what happened after he died. Some people wanted that he stayed for ever the dancer and singer of the Jacksons and Thriller and hated all the amazing things he did after Thriller.

I met him in 1990 when I was working at Universal Studios working at Studio Stars restaurant, which was the flagship restaurant there. He was having lunch with Steven Spielberg and Macaulay Culkin in the VIP room, which was a small dining room off the main restaurant. I was what was called a Lead and he came into the server's station, by himself! white glove and all, and told me the VIP room was really hot and could I do something to correct it, he was right, that room was having AC problems, and could he have a bottle of spring water. So I brought him a bottle of water. He said Thank you and went back into the room. Despite all the weird rumors I found him a gentle soul so I've always had a hard time buying into all that crap.

I recorded the 25th anniversary of Motown, and then wore that VHS tape out! watching this over and over. Michael was done being a group and only agreed to do this special with his brothers if BG promised him a solo at the end. How can you have a Motown celebration without the Jackson 5? So, yes MJ got his spot. Michael may have come off all meek and mild, but he knew, he absolutely knew what he had and just how to drop his bomb on us!! Gene Kelly was watching that night and called Jackson after, his reaction was the same as all of the world watching that night "What the fuck was that???" 13:20 "He's still black"... 😂 Michael had vitiligo and he was burned in a Pepsi commercial in 1985 that burned his hair and scarred his scalp. I thin that is when he got secretly addicted to dysmorphia with his constant surgeries and addictions to pain medications. This is the 25th Anniversary to the Jackson's and Motown Music. I was 7 when he did this and saw it on tv...everyone at school was trying to do the moonwalk down the halls. 😂

Considering the game-changing impact the song had on popular culture, Eddie says in 2011 that "Beat It" is his favorite collaboration. He did it while the rest of his Van Halen bandmates were out of town. "I said to myself, 'Who is going to know that I played on this kid's record, right? Nobody's going to find out.' Wrong!" he laughs. "Big-time wrong. It ended up being Record of the Year." Eddie Van Halen concluded MJ was a musical genius with this childlike innocence. He was such a professional, and such a sweetheart.💖
