Your last three interviews are killing it, Bob!!! You started off last week with Dirk Pinkerton, and followed last Sunday with a remarkable and epic interview with Bob Terzuola, and now Michael Janich! How amazing is that? Many thanks for giving these phenomenal knife makers and designers such exposure to your viewing audience. 🗡️🙏🗡️👍

Great interview! Mike Janich is one very interesting guy. He is a great ambassador for Spiderco, which is slowly becoming my favorite knife company. I've met a few Spiderco personel and all were very helpful, thoughtful, and knowledgeable. I'd love to meet Mr. Janich as well.

Another great Interview Bob, I really love the yojimbo and I will get one soon. I don’t have too many nice knives, my daily carry is my shaman and my para3 so I love spyderco and the compression lock so my third spyderco will be a Yojimbo.

Great podcast. Fun fact : I didn't like the weird look of Sypderco blades first of all, and after trying them (Tenacious S35VN first), i became a steel collector with some of their models. This is the only company that makes steel collecting interesting to me. I know i will get each steel at it's best on their knives, a nice grind and a good factory edge. Even more, the steel collecting made me buy a Delica to get one steel (Superblue), and now i like the knife more than i thought i would, so bought it in 3 different steels. The "color thing" helps a bit too, to motivate the collecting. Same with the huge amount of aftermarket parts we can get, to customize the knives.

Ah the 8cr13m0v tenacious got it for me, a really functional knife. Spyderco heat treat makes even the 8cr13m0v a reasonable edc

@@-Sun1111-Got one too when i saw that the 8Cr13 from Spyderco is ok with the Bow River fixed blade... Not the best steel actually, but good enough for daily use and not crapy at all. Love the black version of the Tenacious.

I live in Serbia, Belgrade. And from this country Mihajlo Janich came to USA. And it is big shame that he never did created just a small shop with Spiderco! I am big fan of Spiderco and what a shame that i can not find all this beauty here, in country that Mihajlo is from! What a sadness...

Question for Mr Janich. What about knife retention? In a stress event with adren pumping and someone or few people attacking you. Trying to disarm you from protecting yourself, the yojimbo has no retention capability. Thoughts?

Just ordered the Military 2 but found out the pocket clip was different. The standard clip for the regular Military doesn't work. It supposedly takes a standard clip, question which Spyderco model has a standard clip to match to ?
@canadafree2087
@canadafree2087 8 месяцев назад
Another Spyderco f'k up like not having 4 position clip when earlier knives do. The Military 2 clip looks too short, they should have stuck with the standard clip. it is is not broke, don't "fix" it.

fyi NYS is a 4" blade length state and now folks in the city can carry. Switchblades are also legal to own and carry during hunting or fishing. Pass it around.

39:26 my only argument here is cost of the knife. 8crmov is a fine steel for most people's use but doesn't make sense to pay a premium price. That's why I would say I would buy this knife if it had a better steel.

Doing construction and remodeling activities always requires some kind of knife , usually a utility blade when I know the edge is going to get destroyed but when not these Spydercos fit the bill for me . Especially for bearing down and pushing hard I particularly like the pm2 and manix 2 . I’m not all experienced with the steels but particularly like the M4 . Seems to be really good . They’re all good tbh . It’s hard to say what s better than another regarding my last sentence because they’re all good in their own ways imho . That m4 tho . I have a maxamet blade that has stayed sticky for a long time now which really impressed me . I hear the k390 is a noticeable good blade steel as well . Can someone tell me what is so special about m398 ?
@tacticalcenter8658
@tacticalcenter8658 8 месяцев назад
M398 is just longer edge retention than m390. But almost everyone that's used it, uses a super basic low value heat treatment. 60 and below. Its just not worth it. There's a white paper on how to properly heat treat m398 though.

Cedric and Ada did one of his many rust tests on Magnacut H2 and LC200N steel. Magnacut rusted while the other 2 did not. So I don't know why this would be used in the salt series.
@tacticalcenter8658
@tacticalcenter8658 8 месяцев назад
That may have been an early sample that had done a extra heat treatment step that was not needed. Peter's heat treatment had the same issues. After changing the protocol to remove that added stress release step, it worked better. A huge batch of knives with magnacut got out that rusted due to this.
@backwoodsman4854
@backwoodsman4854 7 месяцев назад
Didn’t he use acidic chemicals to make it rust? Way beyond salt water, it’s well qualified for the salt series.

My apologies, he did two different rust tests videos including Magnacut and you are correct, he was able to get the very tip to rust over a week of testing.
@tacticalcenter8658
@tacticalcenter8658 7 месяцев назад
@@backwoodsman4854 survive knife, bark river and some custom makers all had rusting magnacut due to heat treatment. Once that was changed, they didnt rust anymore. Not to say that magnacut won't rust. It can. Its not impervious.

The Military not having a 4 position clip is completely moronic when the Endura sets the standard for 4 position clip. Never go backwards. It looks like the Military 2 is an Endura on steroids. People don't want handle colors matching steels, they want their prefered steel in their prefered handle color. Spyderco used to be the poor man's Benchmade, but now at $300-$400 for a non-custom production knife it is even more expensive. I'll stick with what I have.

I buy a knife depending on the heat treatment protocols and the performance provided by that protocol. Not the steel alone.

No one wants 57 to 60rc m390 for example. Spyderco USA currently are between 60 to 62. Spyderco Taiwan maxes out at 60rc. Reate uses m390 with high edge retention at 60rc called secondary hardening where as Spyderco is using a lower temp temper and Reate is using a high heat temper. Other brands are no more than 60rc and just low performing and low value.
@tacticalcenter8658
@tacticalcenter8658 8 месяцев назад
Spyderco USA s90v goes up to 62 where as Spyderco Taiwan is 59rc. While the performance of s90v at 59 is way better than most m390 on the market, I'm not going to pay Taiwan prices for 59rc s90v. Especially since Spyderco USA s90v goes up to 62rc and performs way better and has way better value.
