Michael Jordan 2003: NBA Record 43pts at age 40

There's no zone like Michael's. At age 40, MJ's zone was visited less frequently but still, when it happened, there was just nothing like it in the world. With his knee surgically repaired the year before, one only wonders what really might have happened even at this age had it not been for that knee. ESPN thought MJ could have still led the league in scoring if not for the injury and should that have been the case, the Wiz probably would have made the playoffs which would then have opened the door to anything possible.
In this game, MJ wanted to have a little statement for Richard Jefferson right before he retired. In truly MJ-like fashion, he once again summoned up a 60% shooting effort on call. With 7 straight FGs made in the 3rd quarter, MJ reversed Father Time and became the only player in history to break the 40 point barrier at age 40 and 4 days. With a barrage of silky perimeter shooting, MJ dominated from the outside with fades, step-back jumpers and in-your-face shots against Martin, Kidd, Jefferson and whoever.
Which begs the question. If the Wizards had been contenders, would we have seen more efforts like these at age 40? Most likely and more. But regardless, this performance remains unchartered territory for anyone in history and may stand as one of his most unbreakable records.

Jordan was simply amazing. He scored 43 points on pure fundamentals, with very little athletisism. Footwork, pump fakes, midrange jumpshot, fadeaway, postup and screens. Simply the GOAT

True, but tbh he did use some athleticism on some plays, like the clutch play he had where he drove down the lane quickly like he had some 20 years old legs.

He threw down on multiple defenders trying to block it. Most of LBJ’s dunks are on him leaking out to half court cherry picking . MJ still more athletic than some will ever be even at 40 yrs old.

what I don't understand is why people say Michael Jordan's time with the Wizards was bad. he was putting up stat lines that a lot guys in their prime can't even touch. sure, he wasn't late 80s early 90s Jordan, but it's not like he sucked.
@Wonder2win
@Wonder2win 9 лет назад
I think the Wizards era solidified his greatness even more because it showed just how special he was compared to other players. He had multiple 50 and 40 point games and I don't recall seeing anyone doing this before or after him. Imagine him with this mind coupled with his prime athleticism. Scary.
@JSwanKilowJ
@JSwanKilowJ 9 лет назад
Wonder2win I know that's exactly what I'm saying. I'm not even a big MJ fan. but people always say "let's forget the Wizards-Jordan era" and I'm like why? the man is timeless. from what I've heard, Wilt Chamberlain could've played in his 50s if he really wanted to. he was still in phenomenal shape, it's just that his knees wouldn't allow him to hang with the younger pros, so he gets an asterisk. besides the big dipper, I think you're right.
@famohsen

+JSwanKilowJ It was just so bizarre to see Jordan anything less than the most dominant player in the league. As a Bulls fan, it was rough to watch. I almost kind of block those years out. But now it's pretty interesting to watch these old clips and see how good of shape he was still in
@pheeel17
@pheeel17 8 лет назад
+JSwanKilowJ The other reason was because the 1998 game winner in the finals would have been such an awesome way to leave the sport. I mean, to exit the game on your own terms like that, being the season MVP, Finals MVP, scoring champion, and hit the game winning shot to win the championship in your career final game. When does that ever happen in sports? If he had retired permanently after that, his legacy would've been ever greater than it already is

@FilipoSooaUlufale 10 лет назад
Terris Sallis But Chicago was going to lose MJ, Pippen, Rodman and Phil Jackson regardless after '97-'98, leaving them with Ron Harper, Chuck Person, Toni Kukoc, Brent Barry and a young Stephen Jackson (who had yet to be nicknamed Captain Jack). However, 1998-99 would've been Chicago's first ever NBA Championship without Michael Jordan, as Toni Kukoc will have taken over for him as the undisputed leader of the team, with Ron Harper and Chuck Person handling the bulk of Chicago's scoring in 98-99, Brent Barry shooting from outside, and Dennis Rodman (if he hadn't defected to the Lakers for a short stint) hauling in rebounds to get Chicago vs. San Antonio. Toni Kukoc would have been named the 1999 NBA Finals MVP for his clutch plays, making smart passes and outside shooting versus Jerome Kersey and the San Antonio Spurs. So therefore the key players would've been Ron Harper and Toni Kukoc.

It always cracks me up when people try to say this man wouldn't do as well in today's league, citing the "superior competition" in the modern era. A 40 year old Jordan was averaging 20/6/4 on a bum knee, in his last season in the league (the year before LeBron joined the NBA). What do you think a prime Jordan would do in today's game? Anyone who doesn't think he would absolutely dominate never watched him play.

I absolutely LOST IT when you said LeBron and Kobe are "normal players". Now I know FOR SURE that basketball fans are the most illiterate sports fans in the world. In the NFL and MLB, most fans actually know their sport and they have more historical knowledge. While they know Joe Montana and Dan Marino are two of the greatest ever, they don’t call them invincible or even worse, they don’t say ridiculous and senseless stuff such as, “Oh dang! Montana was so great these idiots even DARE to put him on the same level as Peyton Manning!! He is SO much better Manning is just a "normal player" And while Babe Ruth was a wonderful player, MLB fans don’t say, “Oh dang! Ruth was so great how can you even DARE to compare him to Willie Mays!!” People, please, gain some knowledge about the NBA before you start spewing out ridiculous crap (that’s really selling it short) about how Jordan is so much better than modern players. Look, Michael Jordan is one of the most successful NBA players ever with an unmatched competitive drive and multiple wonderful achievements. But don’t act like he’s a god, and the players today are mere dust compared to him. Give the league and yourself some respect. Dam I don't think I have ever heard anything like this in my life!

There will never be another Diego Maradona in the history of football (you call it soccer) and there will never be another Michael Jordan in the history of basketball. You can write a book about your personal ideas on this subject but you will not be able to change reality: MJ is at the very top unmatched level in basketball and all other good players like LeBron or Kobe follow behind.

John Elmot There has already been Pele and Messi. There has already been multiple Michael Jordans. There have been 2 in styles of play (Kobe Bryant and Dwyane Wade) and 4 more in terms of dominance (Duncan, Shaq, LeBron, and KD). Reality is that Jordan has been matched, and to say that LeBron and Kobe simply "follow behind" is simply ignorant

John Elmot Many soccer fans say Pele is better than Maradona, and Messi has more FIFA player of the years, and has accomplished a lot in his own right. I can put shaq, duncan, and KD in the same breath as Jordan (OMG WHAT BLASPHEMY) because during a long stretch of time they have dominated the game. Idk what "level" Jordan has reached to become a god. (ALL HAIL JORDAN). Just because he may have been a bit better doesn't mean it's so atrocious to say that other players are on his level. It would be different if Jordan averaged 50 per game for a career or something, but these players I mentioned really have done comparable things to Jordan. I bet you are one of those people who has twenty pairs of Jordans, and then twenty more shirts and shorts and hats to match.Many soccer fans say Pele is better than Maradona, and Messi has more FIFA player of the years, and has accomplished a lot in his own right. Glory Okoli saying that anyone has matched the dominance of Jordan is ignorant. In 6 full seasons (the year and a half for baseball don't count), he won 6 championships, 6 Finals MVP trophies in that stretch. NOBODY has done that in any sport in the last 50 years. NOBODY. It took Duncan 15 years to win 5, took Kobe had a 7 year gap between championships. KD doesn't even have ONE, what is wrong with you? you wanna talk about matching his style of play, whatever. I'm 40, 6'7", and I played 2 years of college basketball. When MJ was playing for the Wizards I couldn't truly appreciate what he was doing at his age 38-40 when I was 18-20. Here's the difference between me at 18 vs me at 40. I stay in really good shape and I can still run, jump, swim, fu**, everything I could at 18, but I can't do nearly as much of it, I can't do it for as long, by body gets sore faster, and I meed more time to recover; not from injury, but from just a hard day of work. The fact that Jordan played at an All-Star level as a 40 year old, 82 GAMES!, 37 minutes. That is a level of mental toughness only seen probably in Larry Bird; except Bird's body broke down sooner.

Dear lord the difference in defense. I've been watching old MJ highlights and then I get to his Wizards highlights and the defense is soooo shitty that they can't defend a 40 year old fadeaway. I can't even imagine what a prime Jordan would have done under these rules. A good example of some of the tougher teams is Jordan's 50 against the Heat and what he was still doing at age 34 in 1998.

I recently heard a HOF player state that the defense in the 80s and 90s wasnt as tough as it was today. He said they didnt play it every game, almost every play like they do now. I wish I could remember who said it, because it shocked me, because you always get the "old men" in here talking about the golden old days and how it was "so much better' blah blah blah. I kind of chuckled. I realize now its just ignorance speaking, not actual knowledge of the game.

That's bullshit. Go ahead and tell me the player who said that, because Kobe, Artest, Joe Johnson among others said that that international or 80s rules are more difficult and there are all sorts of COACHES stating they can't imagine what MJ would have put up. Meanwhile, he shattered oldest records at age 40 ;D so there's your proof that he'd kill it.

More reason why he should never be mentioned in the same sentence with the Goat jordan 12 seasons 6 ring Kobe came in the the league at 18 thats 4 years more the Jordan he has already played 19 seasons and still has less rings and less sucess when he will have played 21/22 seasons thats basicly 7/8 more seasons and he has never taken a break so he is always NBA ready and still didn't out Score the GOAT it not easy being greasy bro retiring takes a lot from your reaction time and all that in the pros Jordan was still breaking records in his 40's after he retired and came back as a old man at 38

Jordan was so good that he was being called the greatest of all time by the time of his first retirement. Dude was beast. Comparisons today are really only valid with the 33-40 yr old MJ, and even then its arguable. Basically, '87 - '92 MJ has no comparison.

There will never be a debate about who the greatest basketball player is of all time without it starting with Michael Jordan. Even people who never watched basketball will say Michael Jordan, because his greatness transcended his sport. Jordan’s on-court accomplishments are something to marvel at, but how used his talent to make himself practically bigger than the sport that made him is still an awe-inspiring feat.

Imagine if Jordan had played for the Nets that season. They might have won it all if he was on their team that year. He would have taken it to another level in the playoffs! The Wizards were a shitty team, too shitty for even the GOAT to carry them to a ring at 40 years old. If he had a little more help, he would have kept his legs fresher and been deadly in the playoffs as he always was. He probably would have average 30 a game in like 20-25 minutes, plus his clutch factor would have put them over the top. Even at 40 no one could guard him one on one, no one.
@ozaredam
@ozaredam 7 лет назад
he was the best in his team at that time. If they got into playoffs, his play will probably elevated and he would have scored 30+ppg.

One of the most amazing thing about Jordan is that he was never serious hurt all through his career. He played against the most physical defenses in NBA that would have been flagrant foul in today standard and yet he still ran at 40.
@flameout12345
@flameout12345 10 лет назад
that is like one serious injury in his whole entire career. He played almost entire season for 13 years out of 15. One as you mention was the injury the second was retired or about to retired.

It's because he retired twice in his whole career,that's why he can still run at age 40,.

I'm glad that a glimmer of Jordan's 90's magic was experienced in the last decade. There was nothing like watching him live. Too bad I was so young and couldn't fully appreciate the magnitude of the athlete that I was watching. However, I still remember his owning of the Knicks and Jazz. Looking back at the highlights, there was no competition like Michael Jordan faced in the 90s. You not only had Jordan, but there were great teams scattered throughout the league. His 6 rings are impressive.

LOL, this game was on NYE 2001. I was there. My first and only time I got to see Michael Jordan play in person. Even at 40, Mike straight gave it to the Nets -- Kenyon (sp) Martin especially. He was awesome that night. Wizards won (a rarity the last 30 years) and I left feeling privileged I saw the greatest play that night.
