Michael Jordan - 44 points vs New York Knicks (Jan 9, 1998)

It was the way Michael Jordan kept hitting his shots as the Knicks kept hitting flesh. And it was obvious that no matter what the circumstances, the color of this rivalry had not faded without Patrick Ewing.
The evidence spilled onto the floor at Madison Square Garden last night as each Knick who was fed up with the prickly Dennis Rodman shoved, tripped or barked at him. Pick one, Larry Johnson, John Starks or Charles Oakley.
The trio displayed the kind of anger and aggression that provided the only chance the Knicks had to beat Jordan. And yet, just as Jordan has done throughout his career, he ruined the best group effort by the Knicks, gathering a remarkable 44 points as the Bulls won, 90-89.
"I thought we had tremendous effort," Knicks Coach Jeff Van Gundy said. "We were beaten by a championship-caliber team, by the greatest player ever probably. We had our opportunities."
The victory was not assured until Chris Childs missed a 3-pointer just before the buzzer as the Knicks declined to call a timeout to set up a final play.
"I would have gone inside, but I didn't think I would have gotten the call," Childs said. "I thought the shot I took was good. It just didn't go in this time."
Suddenly, the additions the Knicks have made to surround Ewing with complementary players were on the spot against Chicago last night. More attention was on Houston, though. He had Jordan, but Jordan got the best of him in the second half.
"I don't think I got the job done in the second half," Houston, who had six turnovers, said. "We just didn't get it done. I don't look back and say it was because we have had injuries and that type of thing."
The Bulls had to deal with injuries, too. Scottie Pippen has been out, and Toni Kukoc did not play because of a chest cold.
"We were limited with what we had our there in our arsenal," Bulls Coach Phil Jackson said. '"But we got it done."
The Knicks did not. And that was the bottom line to most of them. Few took solace in playing the Bulls close, but they did believe the team proved something to those who thought this rivalry had lost much of its edge without Ewing.
"We have a lot of talent, still," Oakley said. "People are going to say what they're going to say. As long as we know in-house what we have and keep working, we'll be in a lot of close games."
Maybe they will even win a few, but not this one, not while Jordan had anything to do with it.
"The Knicks came out and played with a lot of dignity," Jordan said. "We were not healthy, either. So we expected a battle."

Yeah, the Bulls had a lot of injuries in the '97-'98 season, particularlly Pip who missed nearly 3 months, yet the Bulls still won 62 games that year and tied Utah with the best record in the league. It just goes to show you how good that Bulls squad was and how great MJ was, he's the GOAT indeed.

No Pip (for most of the season), No Kukoc. 44pts (51% FG shooting)..carried his team, total control, attack from all over the court. GOAT..nuff said.

@3:50, They say Jordan had the kind of calls Durant, Kobe and Lebron have. Just look at that play, even Rodman cannot believe it and remember Jordan is in foul trouble against houston. The bulls didn't have Pippen, their second leading scorer and they didn't have Kukoc, their scorer from the bench. Yet, the refs put Jordan in to foul trouble and doesn't respect him when he attacks the basket and sacrifice his body at 35 years old. And Jordan doesn't even complain. Now at 4:10, only few seconds later, they give another foul to Jordan. And some of those kids, new nba fans say Jordan had the kind of calls those superstars today have.@4:55, look at how he dives on the floor at age 35 for a regular season game. @ 6:02, if Lebron passes the ball like that on this play, they will say he's a better passer than Magic Johnson. I don't even have to comment on the points he scored and the difficult shots he makes...making them look so easy. In today's nba, he would have had 45 replays in every angle possible on some of those moves to admire their degree of difficulties.

No one ever made reads on offense as quickly as Jordan imo. Maybe Bird, but that's it. Look at 8:56 how he cuts towards the basket, comes back out, getting Houston's momentum coming away from the basket, and then immediately goes baseline again to use Houston's momentum against him, because he saw there was an opening there that he could get to before the defense reacted. Brilliant.

Just in case anyone wonders about this vid - I was never happy with my first edit. Back then you had a 100 MB size limit and no HQ option, so the guiding principle was to keep the edits as short as possible, also noticeable in my Bulls-Cavs series from 1993. I won't delete my first edit though, after all there might be guys who prefer a shorter version of this game.

I'm sorry but I've been arguing with some idiots lately who are stuck in a time machine and think that Oscar Robertson was better then Michael Jordan. I know that the films on Oscar are limited but just watch the ones that are available of him in his prime and then compare what you see to an older MJ. It's not even close! The skills and athleticism that Michael Jordan possessed DWARFED what "The Big O" had to offer. There's a thing called learning from your forefathers, modern medicine, evolved work out regiments and advanced technology that gives your modern players quite an advantage. Anyone who doesn't recognize that is stupid.

MJ is better but these generalizations of better nutrition and such is hilarious. We were a modern nation in the 80's and 90's. There's a difference between the 90's and the 50's in terms of such things. If you think that today's athletes at least in the NBA, are demonstrably better because of nutrition or modern twining methods, you're general understanding of things is inaccurate.

81 pts is great, but in the context of things it really isn't that significant. Raptors were probably the worst defensive team in the league and also had numerous injuries. The specific coaching instructions in the game also was to let Kobe get his and focus defensively on his teammates. Then there's the lax defensive rules today as well. 81 is amazing but not mind boggling when put in perspective.

I think it's the game-winning shot Jordan hit on them in 1987. It's on all his highlight videos. He takes it full court against Gerald Wilkins, gets Wilkins on his hip, and then shoots it over 2-3 defenders from about 21 feet out on the left wing to win the game. The game is up on youtube, but I forget the date.

It was a good shooting night and a pretty efficient scoring night overall for him. Not as good as his usual 40+ point games, but as good on a FG% and points-per-shot basis as most players in the league today.

What Hubbie Brown says at 3:13 basically sums up Kobe's career and why Kobe never figured out how to dominate games but rather he ended up just another great shooter to pass through the league. When it's all said and done, Curry will be remembered over Kobe. Guys who settle for Js come a dime a dozen, while Jedi of the court dominate, like Magic, MJ, Kareem, Olajuwon etc. did.

Emmanuel Enyinwa - it was a tougher era period - rules to curtail defense were instituted to promote easier scoring as stated by the NBA - facts. And while MJ did get some favorable calls, it by no means was a lot as you suggest. All star players get some calls, just ask LBJ.

I would also like to point out that the reason most of these "superstars" are having the numbers they are getting is mostly due to those lax defensive rules primarily. But, whatever the game has changed drastically and the reason why is that the wing players couldn't get these numbers they're getting now if they hadn't changed the defensive rules to favor them. It is clearly an indication of their inferior ability.

Well at that point in time many teams especially in the east were struggling. Chicago had the luxury of Boston and Detroit having some injury woes and were able to capitalize on getting the top spot. I didn't mean that these past teams supremely competed every time, but these teams now have the benefit of lax defensive rules and weaker competition. The past era was watered down especially after they added expansion teams but i still don't agree that competition is stronger now. no way.

It wasn't my intention to sound like a smartass, lol. Motivated players with fundamentals and the right work ethic can play at that level for a long time. Jordan did not miss a single game when he came back to the Bulls, and Karl Malone, for example, was an iron man as well. Tim Duncan can play at that current level at least 2-3 more years, whereas guys like Stoudemire or Howard will fade at Duncan's age.

Last few years or so, with a losing record so whether that make the playoffs or not is not indicative of the competition being better now. Look at all the 8 teams that make it and see what their records were. There may be a few on there with majority winning record. I'm not saying there aren't any talented players, there just aren't as many as there were then. The majority of the players today sufficiently lack the fundamentals and the high basketball iq of the past players.

Think about it ... apart from what I previously said, the current rules also give perimeters players an unfair advantage, something the NBA intended.
