Michael Jordan "Flu Game" - Bulls vs Jazz, 1997 Finals: Game 5

"A courageous, classic performance by the flu-ridden Michael Jordan." -- Marv Albert
Fighting the flu and the rejuvenated Jazz, Michael Jordan put in one of his greatest games ever.
Struggling even to stand at times, Jordan scored 38 points to will his team to a 90-88 win over Utah in game 5 of the 1997 Finals.
There's not too much that can be said about what Jordan did in this game.
One can really only watch and marvel at that man's will to succeed.

I remember watching this game. Normally when the media says an athlete is under the weather but they're still going to play anyway they tend to exaggerate. As soon as I saw MJ's face I immediately knew that something was wrong with him. He was so gifted physically but what really separated him from everyone else was his work ethic & his mental toughness.

TLL1980 That's what Jalen Rose said, but as good as an insider Rose is, it's not like he was actually anywhere near the scene. And Chris Tordi it was actually food poisoning. I'm not even sure why it was considered breaking news in 2013 that it was bad pizza. I've been a big Bulls fan since I was an eight-year-old in 1988, and I read everything I could get my hands on during the championship run, and Jordan admitted to the media back in June 1997 that it was a bad pizza. Guess the reporters weren't taking good notes.

The combination of athleticism and fundamentals is what made him so unstoppable. Sum it up in one word: Efficient. Greatness, contrary to millennial/zoomer belief isn't excess ability or degree of difficulty, but the ability to do what you do great when you MUST BE ABLE TO. MJ was amazing because he could be efficient in any setting. Didn't require perfect situations to be incredible.

@@manuginobilisbaldspot424seriously, no wasted movement or extra showboating. Yes, he’d add a little sizzle at times to entertain, but he’d just get to his spots and never looked sloppy or out of control like the “more talented” cupcake era we’re currently in.

What an amazing moment for me. I was 15 back in 1997, watched it live from Australia on a Monday. Such an amazing performance by Jordan, he struggled because of a bad fever and he was dizzy but somehow he pushed himself to the very end. And Karl Malone made the biggest mistake of his career by not fouling Pippen with 10 seconds left. The 97 and 98 Finals were the best, so many epic moments like Stockton fullcourt to Malone, Steve Kerr, Jordan stealing it from Malone and scoring the winner.

+Lance Palmieri Lebron AVERAGED per game 35.8 points, 8.8 assists, 13.3 rebounds, 1.3 steals and .5 blocks in the Finals last post-season. Do you even realize how ridiculously hard that is to do in the NBA? Those are video game numbers... He nearly averaged a triple double and kept the series interesting despite the fact that Golden State was obviously way more loaded and had a much deeper bench. 70% of the Cavs offense was either scored by LBJ or assisted by LBJ. Lebron is the ONLY player in NBA history to lead both teams in the finals in PPG, APG and RPG. Not even MJ did that... Lebron was without Kyrie Irving and Kevin Love in that series. That would be like MJ being without Pippen and Longley/Kukoc. The fact that the finals even made it to 6 games considering the injuries to the Cavs is as much proof that Lebron is the greatest player in the world right now as any. I can't think of any other way to put it. Whatever team Lebron has been on since 2011 has been in the Finals. Teams that Lebron leaves normally don't make it to the playoffs or if they do, they don't make it very far. I guarantee you the Heat won't even make it to the ECF this year. I am sure the Cavs will. All these comments comparing to MJ are fucking stupid. They are essentially the same player. Look at what Lebron did in two elimination games against the Spurs in 2013. Triple double in game 6 and 37 points on 52% shooting in game 7. He was every bit as clutch as any player has ever been on the biggest stage.

+StellarNostalgic Finals History: Game 6 of 2013 Finals - Lebron posts a triple double with 32 points, 11 assists and 10 boards. Heat avoid elimination to force game 7. Game 7 of 2013 Finals - Lebron shoots 52% from the field and had 37 points, including two clutch jumpers and two free throws to seal a back to back championship. Also dishes 4 assists and collects 12 more boards. Yep. Lebron is trash. Worst player ever.

+catsnake7 Lebron AVERAGED per game 35.8 points, 8.8 assists, 13.3 rebounds, 1.3 steals and .5 blocks in the Finals last post-season.
@bhfootballtalents9777
@bhfootballtalents9777 8 лет назад
I doubt that anyone dare to claim that Lebron sucks or that he isn't among greatest NBA players, but if you claim that he did more or better then MJ, well, then you are biased, irrational or plain stupid !

Nothing and nobody could ever hold back Michael Jordan from achieving greatness time and time again at even greater and greater heights every step of the way. He proved the naysayers wrong without fail. And he unashamedly humiliated his opponents on their home floor countless times during the regular season and on the biggest stages in the postseason for years.

escapee1993 Le'bron barely gets touched and he slides through the court. I rather leave from a cramp then flop my way into the championship.Jordan never complained about his team because he couldn't lead " his team " to a NBA championship. Le'bron left the Cavs to go win a championship because he needed help and it still took him some time to do so. Don't compare Le'bron to Jordan your arguement is invalid.

Totally agree. Malone had some big Finals games, like game 5 in 1998 (39 points), and game 3 in 1997 (37 points), but overall 1997 was a tough series for him. Two missed FT's in game 1, and a disappearing act down the stretches of games 5 and 6.

I wasn't referring to whether the current players take the game seriously. I was talking about them growing some balls and playing like men. I was talking about them bitching and whinning about everything. The formers players welcomed physical play and made sure you eaen every point the hard way!!! The former players didn't look af the refs and begged for fouls to be called!!! That's when the NBA was fun to watch. This is my opinion; your opinion may defer from mine. I've heard a lot of people express the same thoughts that I did. Conincidentally a lot are females; goes to show you.

Brad Peterson "I was talking about them growing some balls and playing like men." So Kobe dont play like a man?? Im pretty sure your beloved MJ complained about fouls too!
